Did some quick math, and it's as bad as I feared: in the past 4 years, encompassing everything after the 2020 COVID-shortened seasons, the Milwaukee NBA team spent ~$848m on their 15-man rosters, incl. tax payments. The Milwaukee MLB team spent ~$491.5m on their 40-man rosters.

Players only meeting is needed. Portis is clearly playing for numbers with a new contract beckoning next summer. More than half the team ballwatches well after any shot they make or miss. Shooting comes and goes, the scheme is new, but there are no excuses for bad effort.

It's as bad as I expected for the Bucks so far this year. 1st half: 108.3 ORtg (12th), 102.9 DRtg (9th), +5.3 net (10th). 2nd half: 114.2 ORtg (16th), 129.9 DRtg (28th), -15.7 net (29th). At least for Thursday, Memphis has the league's worst 2nd-half DRtg (135.4) and net (-31.1).

Their tax bill is currently $49.2m. Add the $181.6m in salary, and you're looking at a $230.7m roster. Filling the now-open roster spot with a minimum (Cam Payne?) would increase the tax bill by a further $8.6m. Bucks are over the second apron and can only offer minimums.

Public service announcement to Bucks fans: if you want to trade Portis, they cannot take back more than $12.5m in return (his salary) under ANY circumstances due to the 2nd apron. So if ONE player in your deal coming to Milwaukee makes $1 more than Portis, it’s illegal.
