100 years ago today, my great grandmother Rafaela came to this country and Colorado. Her only surviving child, Maria, was born in Boulder not long after. Today I am inspired by her courage and the courage of newcomers everywhere to build a better life.

Maria, my grandmother, will turn 94 in a few weeks. She still has this electric smile. It’s overwhelming to think of all that our families went through (all that they overcame!) to make our lives possible. It’s humbling, empowering, and clarifying for us to honor their journey.
