Once I was a man who did not know the power a filtered wavetable FM oscillator held. I am no longer that man 🧙♂️ TLDR: use filters on your wavetable modulators 🤩👍 Some of the old FM8 patches used this so well to recreate flute-like textures. Carrier: sine-ish (may have a few odd harmonics for a more woody flavor) Modulator: Noise oscillator + keytracked phaser

SoundCloud switching from mid quality mp3 to higher bitrate AAC codec, very cool! 😎👍

Yep sab3r is correct, AAC is the successor to MP3 and is also made by the same research organization (Fraunhofer). Though I would assume SoundCloud probably used LAME MP3 in their implementation. This is a much better move for quality, than when they tried to implement the Opus codec. Fraunhofer AAC is slightly bigger at the same bitrate, but the quality of the encoding is better. The compression to quality ratio is a net positive. As using a slightly lower bitrate AAC would equate to the same quality as a higher bitrate mp3 with a smaller overall size. Given that Soundcloud opted for a higher bitrate of 160kbps AAC—compared to 128kbps MP3—we should experience better quality if implemented correctly. The thing about AAC is it has several types. I urge people to read through the specifications sometime. I'm quite interested in which AAC SoundCloud opted for. (Hopeful that it's something along the lines of AAC-LC)
