PMQs tomorrow- every MP who speaks should ask Johnson about the ‘party’ - not just Starmer. Tory, Labour, LibDems, SNP and Green should all stand and be counted on this one.
How can Braverman instruct gov lawyers not to advise if new proposed laws are illegal? Is that not their actual purpose? And why has she not been struck off as a lawyer for such a move? N Korea!
Makes me laugh. Reform now incandescent about no of votes v seats and are cross that LibDems have done so brilliantly- because we’ve learned that under fptp national vote is meaningless - so we focus our resources where we think we can win. But sure - would love PR. Meanwhile ….
Tonight the LibDems in Lords are calling ‘a fatal vote’ to stop the Tories bringing in photo voter ID. Up to 2 million people don’t have photo ID. Why? Because the disenfranchised don’t vote Conservative. Cynical. Dangerous. Disgusting.
@ArleneFosterUK
Arlene - just for once - think about the best interests of the United Kingdom and not the DUP. If you don’t kick off - and have the bravery to move forward - there will be no controversy to attach to the King.
I joined the LibDems because of these lines in the preamble to their constitution. ‘No one should be confined by poverty, ignorance or conformity’. Just loved that. And still do.
@PinkNews
Keira has clearly had a very traumatic time and not been served well - however I hope she doesn’t now assume that all trans kids are like her or have her terrible experience. The whole point is for the individual to be treated as such
It's the 10th anniversary of the Same Sex Marriage Act, one of my proudest achievements as PM. Thousands of gay couples have been able to make their vows over the past decade as a result. It's proof that positive change happens when we all work for it. A very happy anniversary!🏳️🌈
@jk_rowling
The amount of money being thrown at undermining trans rights and abortion rights by the religious right in USA, RUSSIA and parts of Europe should be enough to make you understand what us actually happening with this faux war.
When I was bringing same sex marriage to fruition - I was told that I was undermining marriage. People attack trans women saying it undermines being a woman. Neither is the case.
Home Secretary - for once lead. Order your department and border force to remove all and any restrictions on Ukrainians coming to U.K. That’s the point of power - use it.
Tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of the passing of the Same Sex Marriage Act - my happy place in politics. Read ‘Equal Ever After’ to learn the true story. Spoiler - it wasn’t David Cameron’s idea! Most is owed to the LGBT campaigners who fought for decades - they’re the heroes.
@SarahLudford
Sarah - I’ve got covid at the moment. I took the Equality Act through the Commons for LibDems - and you are right that the term used is ‘Gender reassignment’ but I pushed for gov to clarify that this meant anywhere on the gender spectrum - and it does. In Hansard. And in law
@HelenCBelcher
I understand that women are frightened that bad men may pose as women to access single sex spaces. Those men are clearly criminals. But they are not trans women. When did we as a country take away rights from innocent people?
Feel sorry for the many decent Conservatives who hate the populist turn that the Tories are hell bent on - desperate stuff. Come to the LibDems (or even Labour) depending where you live. Come to the sane centre ground of decent politics and facts! You’re welcome 😄
Well Labour would have looked pretty stupid if they’d voted against. But I was the originator and architect of the same sex marriage law in government and brought the legislation to the floor. Be nice if you ever could admit it! Read ‘Equal Ever After’ for true story!
Equal marriage only passed because Labour MPs voted for it.
136 Tory MPs - who the Lib Dems were in coalition with - voted against it and Tory MPs tried to derail it with amendments.
At least you're proud of the Lib Dems record in coalition, voting for every Tory austerity cut
Haven’t read the whole Cass Review yet. But will be looking for her rationale for the age of 25. Having worked extensively with the trans community when Equalities minister my expectation was that whatever support is given - would be based on knowledge of the individual’s needs.
No it’s not. My goodness - trans women are far more at risk than cis women. Men who pretend to be trans women to use female spaces are male criminals. They are not trans women!
“My ambition for the next ten years is that we don’t call it same sex marriage, we just call it marriage.”
Baroness Featherstone, former minister who drove forward marriage equality, looks back on ten years since the first gay marriage ceremonies were held.
@LFeatherstone
Truss sideswipes at Nick Clegg for keeping the number of under fours that can be looked after by one childminder. Ie keeping good standards. I hope that people now recognise the LibDems stopped the Cons doing their worst.
Labour should be ashamed of their abstention in the lords last night. The Rwanda Bill would have been defeated by the LibDem fatal motion if they hadn’t been such cowards. Shame on them!
@maitlis
I had the same - but was suspicious (natural state). So I said I would phone the bank myself, thanked him and hung up. From a different phone- I then phonedmy bank only to discover it had been genuine! So - I guess - phone your bank yourself to check - either way - it’s best.
@SarahLudford
And I did this exactly because I was concerned that the word ‘assignment’ would be interpreted as having had surgery. Just as is happening here. When am back can go through if you like. But as I say - if you read all the stages of the Bill in Hansard you will see
The Met have lost their reason. An opportunity to do the right thing lies in tatters. Whoever gave the command to police the vigil in this heavy handed manner must resign. Beyond the pale, counter productive. They should hang their heads in shame!
#freecountry
‘No one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity’.
Those words in the preamble to the LinDem constitution are why I joined the LibDems. Then as now. Vote LibDem.
Make no mistake, we are getting ready for these elections -
@TheIndGroup
will be the only ones giving a voice to the millions of voters who want a confirmatory vote on leaving the EU. Join our fight 💪
Ed still thinks LD that the LibDem coalition successes will persuade people to vote for us. At 6% in the polls it’s not a common view. We need to move on.
#VoteLayla
I’m used to it. And if the researchers bothered reading the true story ‘Equal Ever After’ they would learn that Stonewall at the beginning of my move to legislate for Same Sex Marriage - was dead against it!
@BBCTheOneShow
doing a piece on equal marriage and implying stonewall were at the heart of the campaign. No mention of
@lfeatherstone
the originator and architect of the Equall Marriage legislation
Shirley was my political hero - so very sad that I will no longer be able to hear her wisdom and her intellect. She always made sense.
#shirleywilliamsRIP
If you put 2 biological females on an island humanity dies out (but they’d talk loads) if you put a biological male & a trans woman on an island humanity dies out. But if u put a male & a female there we might stand a chance! Providing they can fish of course. Binary Sex matters
If we’ve reached a place where Keir Starmer fears putting Labour policies out there in case they appear on Tory leaflets - or the powerful Tory media weaponise it - then he should grow a pair - and put PR as a priority. Til then - we won’t get honest politics and a decent country
The absurd media worship of Farage is just awful. During the election period they have to observe the rules - but their slavish devotion to him post the election needs to end.
Congratulations to
@EdwardJDavey
for a convincing win and wishing him every success in taking the LibDems forward. He wasn’t my choice but he is a decent human being, a seasoned campaigner and I expect and hope for great advances under his leadership.
I am so upset by the bad guys winning in recent times. Tonight and tomorrow truly hope truth and justice triumph, that people are able to distinguish right from wrong and that live and let live and kindness rule.
@bbclaurak
why do you interviewers never challenge Tories claiming credit for same sex marriage. It was a LibDem initiative in the coalition - yes Cameron came on board - but over half his MPs voted against. BBC fact checkers - do your work!
Labour need to grow a pair. Cringing excuses for enabling the Tory Rwanda bill to get past second reading in the lords. If they weren’t so frightened of their own pre election shadow they would vote to kill this appalling bill decreeing Rwanda a safe country. Pathetic!
Often said that Cameron modernisation is dead. I don't see that. Surely quintessential policy is same sex marriage.
Would be extremely surprised if any of the candidates in a future Tory leadership race proposed scrapping same sex marriage
It’s an absolute tragedy. The soft power and respect earned by DFID worldwide will be diminished. And it is the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world who will more and more find their needs are subjugated to UK power wars and trade needs
@samwebber
@fascinatorfun
@LauraLeeDavies
He also personally cared for the nurse who got Ebola (I think at the Royal Free). We are lucky to have someone with Whitty’s integrity at the top.
I’ve watched Layla grow and go from strength to strength in this leadership contest. She has had a stunning campaign and is a force of nature. As Leader I am sure she will lift our spirits and our votes.
#VoteLayla
I nominated Layla Moran for Leader because we need a radical, stand out leader if we are to make headway - Layla will build our profile and our votes and bring fresh new thinking.
@LaylaMoran
Nothing better than having fallen asleep around midnight - despite trying to stay awake for the result - to wake at 3.15 to find LibDems winning North Shropshire. What a result! Congrats to Helen and the Party. Extraordinary result!
Yup. My initiative. But real credit is the LGBT campaigners who suffered and campaigned for years. But put a liberal into gov - who ignores the fact ssm not in manifestos or coalition agreement / but does it anyway - and now it’s law! And Cameron should thank me - as he clings
