One of the things that initially attracted me to web3 was decentralized social networks. I was able to join Facebook in 2006 because I was a freshman at Harvard, and I remember it feeling so intimate and fun. It was like a digital playground where you could do weird things like “poke” crushes and post pics and write on friends’ timelines without really thinking about it. It was a place where people at least seemed to be acting in good faith. I never imagined Facebook would turn into the garbage that it is today and swallow up companies and ruin them like they’ve done with Instagram. I can’t express how furious I’ve been watching Meta actively ignore reports of the harm it causes, and how powerless I’ve felt because it’s become such a massive company. A part of it is because of Zuckerberg’s creepy personality. But the reason he’s been able to get away with it is because of centralization and the way web2 is structured. I love my Instagram community. But I am stuck there because Meta owns everything I do on their stupid app. I have to accept every privacy, feature, and algorithm change because my option is either put up with it or leave everything I’ve built on there. The users of these products have zero power. And where would I go? TikTok? Having lived in China for 10 years, I’m honestly terrified of TikTok and won’t download it on my phone. The reports of the data it collects without your knowledge or permission are too creepy for me to ignore, but then I’m kind of stuck out of this big cultural nexus. I love culture. I love the internet. But its current web2 form isn’t built with the user in mind- it is built to maximize profit for a small group of people at any cost to *any* community. That is why web3 is so exciting. What @LensProtocol @farcaster_xyz @t2wrld and others are doing is building a digital social future where you actually have agency. The internet is no longer separate from our “real” lives- it is entirely interwoven with almost everything we do. Can you imagine if we were treated IRL like the big tech companies currently treat us online? Why are we tolerating this?
