The people. Despite aggressive right-wing politics, TX has incredibly diverse communities that have thrived. In almost every sense, Houston doesn’t have what I want (walkability, state politics, etc.) & I have many times considered a move, but I love the people too much.
Houston is a city that makes no sense to me.
Insanely sprawled, but growing like crazy & great economy. However, you deal with Florida-like weather (humidity, hurricanes, floods, bugs), but don’t have beautiful beaches or scenery to make up for it like FLA.
What am I missing?

Was walking up to my bus stop on Kirby when someone catcalled me so I turned right around & called an uber from Target. I’ve been harassed at night in other cities but since there’s so little foot traffic here, it’s scarier to bus commute alone at night as a woman in Houston :/

Moved to a more walkable area 2 yrs ago (still not as walkable as i would like), then about a yr ago started to use Metro more. Realized I wasn’t using my car much, just for longer commutes 1-2x/wk, realized I could just uber few times a month instead of keeping my car.

While very unfortunately it seems impossible to stop creeps from being creeps, more people on sidewalks = less chance they’ll harass people. More crosswalks so women can switch sides to avoid harassers instead of being stuck on the same sidewalk bc there’s no other option.

I don’t. Is this your big gotcha? Lol. I went from getting on them almost daily to now maybe 2-4 times a month w/ the bus & sometimes uber. Bus routes avoid highways so even when I go to places I used to get on the highways for, it’s now through the neighborhood streets.

As someone who lived in Europe, & fell in love with urbanism & walkable cities because of my time in Europe, I think American urbanists need to abandon the rhetoric of praising European urbanism. Many European cities are terrible for the disabled community. We can imagine better.

I always tell people that yes, metro is unreliable in some areas. That’s just an unfortunate truth. BUT it’s more reliable than what it is painted out to be. It IS easy from some areas to other. Once I realized that, moving around in this big city felt possible w/o a car!
