hey, wanna learn about why reality shows are emergent narrative systems, and see the generative mcmansion murder house game
@unormal
and I are kicking around? please watch my talk from roguelike celebration 2023!
in British summer time there is something called “flying ant day”, and people just casually expect you to accept, from time to time, that it is “flying ant day”
guys i know this is going to come as a shock, but when you send replies to women where you pretend to be a hostile/annoying man "as a joke" to prove you "get it", it is not meaningfully different from the "real" hostile/annoying replies and is not actually endearing
can you actually start putting women storytellers with significant experience in leadership roles now instead of making us pretend that we are young and need mentorship in order to make men comfortable enough to hire us
if you take "conquer and exploit an area that isn't yours" off the table, 90% of game dev dudes will be totally lost as to what the game should be about
Dr. Phil’s house looking like a 1998 💿 game that you got out of a basket in the front of the computer store with a dented box and a sticker that says “Mind-Bending Graphics!”
Pokémon employee A: let’s make one that’s a cute electric mouse!
Pokémon employee B: how about a a cute bird!
Pokémon employee C: and also one that wears the skull of its mother
with every metaverse idea ask: why wouldn’t I just text. why wouldn’t we group call. why wouldn’t I one-click buy. what is the value add of fucking around in a 3D world to do basic things? there is none. who wants to go to work as a corporate cartoon? literally no one.
here's a tip: there's no entertaining way. doing the undesirable behavior 'as a joke' is still undesirable, not endearing. we've heard so many 'well actually' 'jokes' that it's now indistinguishable from genuine undermining. avoid this temptation and you will go far in life
next year, say no sometimes. don't reply. ignore notifications. cancel plans, tell people you feel sooo bad -- but don't actually feel bad. burn on a pyre the constant fear of dissatisfying others. let them be as dissatisfied as you have been for far too long.
anytime i want to post a joke on twitter i think about all the people who won't get the joke, who will try to 'add to' the joke, or otherwise 'correct' the joke and it makes me hate y'all too much to give you any of my jokes
anybody else freaked out by how instantaneously their community got excited to serve up their civil freedoms, nearly begging for more police enforcement and mobile phone surveillance and local snitching
thinking in verbs is such a basic and overlooked game design component. so many exhausting meetings on What The Game Should Be, where nobody can answer the simpler question: What Does the Player Do
I bet when they pitched The Good Place, nobody said “and then they deal with their relationships through comic surrealism and philosophy.” They just probably went “it’s a funny Hell”, and that’s something important to remember about pitching
people who shame you for sharing your projects and successes have prob never had to work hard to survive. If you’re reading this, you did good this year, shout it out
the industry doesn’t really know how to tell stories, and it likes to bring in the writer as a low-pay external contractor after it’s too late to change anything
still wild to me that the game industry is like "writers are here to dress up the game" rather than going "the game is a story, and all the elements of the game act to serve the story."
kinda sucks how people skill up into management roles and then they have to do their job worse so that someone else can do their job better. management should be its own career track not just like, the promotion ceiling for a specialization
years ago i said the most important takeaway from my experiences being targeted in 2014 was that this sort of bad-faith petitioning, based on whatever could be found in your internet footprint, was going to start happening to anyone upon whom the spotlight fell
dunno who needs to hear this today but you don’t need to figure out ‘what happens in the story’ half as much as you need to figure out what the player is likely to feel and to want to do from moment to moment in the space you created
don't do worldbuilding too early. the world should be built to serve what's being expressed through the mechanics, and a big story bible without specific context is a waste of time and money at best, potentially confusing to the game design at worst
ok so I’m absolutely obsessed w algorithmic casual game ads right now. this one seems to be about dealing with flooding and mice simultaneously while pregnant in jail
information economy collapsed, being nice to your friend is 'care work', sharing your experiences and education with others is 'labor', media literacy is at an alltime low and we're losing access to our archives. seems fine
important note: lots of abusive people hide in justice-oriented groups and perform the behaviors very well. If a dude seems overly committed to performing social justice, it’s a red flag. Help is an action not a personality
a lot of smarmy opportunists tried to exploit gamergate to benefit their careers, wanking off The Gamers with 'both sides' bullshit, i SAW y'all, stay in your lane now
@leighalexander
How does it feel to be one of the most infamous women in video game history?
We're still waiting for you and your fellow feminist carpet baggers to build a 100% female game studio and create something of substance instead of destroying what men have created.
just IMAGINE people are leaving your company every MONTH, your major PUBLISHER has to bring in a consultant to find out what the fuck is going on, and you STILL keep your job on the team? couldn’t be me, or any woman
seriously though, if you start kind of lowkey testing how many well-intentioned and supposedly creative people cannot extricate white supremacy from the notion of "adventure", it's very depressing
evangelion is not that complicated. the “AT field” is the protective ego. the “angel” is the mortifying ordeal of being known. the “eva” is our self-image, our obligation to engage despite the pain, driven by relational wounds, duh
so many men in this industry are interested in Helping Women so long as we are young, submissive, grateful and make them look good. Once we expect to be treated like peers and colleagues the bubble bursts for them and they go back to caressing their figurines or whatever
Having someone wince when I mentioned my age in an interview and then the tone changed from them being excited to being totally uninterested after that is not exactly the vibes I was hoping for going into the weekend, but ok 😮💨
36 does not equate the crypt keeper y’all 😭
I hope the lesson other studios take from Tears of the Kingdom is not that they should try to make big games on this level, but that they have no prayer of making big games on this level
me, not writing: i wish i were writing. if only i were writing, then i could see my great ideas developed and all my pain would be cured
me, writing: fuck. this sucks, what the fuck
me: this world seems rich and interesting but can we subvert the inherent colonialism in some way
game devs: hm... but then the player won't have anything to do
me: yeah, i guess there just aren't many solutions there for us, the experience designers
also, dudes: sometimes the feminist thing to do is simply "NOT hooking up with this much younger and/or more junior person in your small-world industry EVEN IF she doesn't report directly to you and EVEN IF she seems to really want to". think about it!
when i worked in media every one of my colleagues and every outlet i worked for was impacted by a narrative that we now see was manufactured by facebook
If you missed it: today it was confirmed that Facebook massively & knowingly inflated its video-view statistics, which had the DIRECT consequence of 90% of media orgs firing writers in favor of expensive video producers, who also got fired when it turned out video was worthless
you: ...so you want to make a game about TALKING to MONSTERS instead of HITTING them? BORING
me: i mean i think it's hilarious this is the only place your imagination ever goes, but if you were better at your job you could have taken that idea and made shin megami tensei sooo
them: we realllly reallllly need an experienced adult woman's perspective on this story pleaseeee pleaseeee
me: okay fine, the plot structure is really dated, no more boy heroes finding maguffins
them: hmm too confusing, we went with someone else
pandemic has highlighted the extent to which we were not meant to obtain and prepare nutrition multiple times a day on an individual or couple basis. we are supposed to live in societies and families and take turns feeding each other
