Matt: WPE don’t contribute enough. I will destroy them.
People: Sure, but they aren’t actually required to, right?
Matt: It’s a licensing issue! My mum’s confused!
People: What exactly are they doing that’s against the license?
Matt: They’re not contributing enough!
😳😳
Last week I launched the new version of my Design Fundamentals course.
This weeks launch was *significantly* harder.
But everyone, meet Lucy Rose Dunn 😀
So today (for my birthday) I finally launched Design Fundametals! 🎉
It’s been months of intense work but I’m SO happy with how it’s come out and hearing the feedback from the pre-order students is the best feeling in the world.
Check it out:
I'm proud as punch to be in what I consider the *most beautiful*
@smashingmag
book ever created.
Not only that, it's alongside some of the most high quality pieces on web design I've ever read. This is definitely one for your bookshelf.
Get it here 👉
🔥 By the way, Project Pack: The Web Design Edition is now officially LIVE!
Check out the most comprehensive, beautiful, and darn effective set of templates for freelancers and agencies.

The fun thing about teaching a design course is that when I show a trick that I use in design and try to explain it, I end up having a ton of epiphanies as to WHY certain things look good, that I didn't know before.
Teaching really is a fantastic way to learn. 👍
Working on some Project Pack designs today. Goal is to make these ridiculously easy to edit to fit with any brand. Pre-orders are going to be open from Black Friday!
I didn't realise how important in-person conferences can be for motivation/growth until now.
My businesses still do well, but I have no idea what to do next and I've lost my
#1
source of new ideas...
Anyone else in the same situation?
@photomatt
@wpengine
If you haven’t defined what companies who run on WordPress are required to do to give back, it doesn’t seem fair outing them for not doing enough.
“Enough” needs to be defined. It can’t be based on one persons private opinion.
Cracked the 10k subscriber mark today! Yes it’s nothing more than a vanity metric, but we’re all allowed to be a little vain now and again, aren’t we? 🎉🎉
Today is a BIG day:
🚀 Launched pre orders for — a set of beautifully designed, and crazy comprehensive set of templates for freelancers with
@brennandunn
(with a 60% discount when you pre order)
💡Working on a new thing.
The most comprehensive set of documents and templates for freelancers/agencies... and they'll all integrate directly with Client Portal!
Landing page is in the works...
First day fully back at work after being part time/on maternity leave for the last 5 months.
I’m excited to get back into it, and even more excited to end each day seeing this face👇
I have to say,
@calm
has been my favourite subscription of the year.
I got it to help with my insomnia (which amazingly it did!), but it's also so good for focusing at work and dealing with life in general.
Keeping this one 👍
Does anyone have any links to online courses they've taken (or are taking) that completely exceeded their expectations in every way? Would ❤️ to hear about them!
Congrats to both
@steveschoger
and
@adamwathan
on launching Refactoring UI!
Teaching design in a practical and useful way is *really* hard so massive props to you for everything you do to help devs learn how to make stuff look good.
🔥🔥🔥
🔥 Excited to announce that Refactoring UI is now available!
It's everything we know about designing for the web, packed into a single comprehensive resource.
Get it during the launch for up to 40% off 👉🏻
🚀 Just published my most in-depth article to date about launching the pre-sales for Design Fundamentals.
I go through what worked, what didn’t work, and a step-by-step guide to all the logistics of pulling something like this off.
Check it out: ❤️
Everyone said that when they improve their fitness their energy increases.
I’ve never experienced this historically but after strength training for just 2 months and switching to a cargo bike (now 100% car free), I have so much more energy, and I’m just generally happier 💪
@pb_steele
Exactly. It comes across to me as jealously over how much they’re making, or some kind of personal grudge.
Trying to stay open minded of course..
In the next 2 months I'm:
- Moving back to the UK
- Selling our house
- Buying a new house
- Shipping half our furniture, selling the rest
- Re-recording my course
- Having a baby
- Shutting down my US company and starting a UK one
- Sponsoring
@brennandunn
for his UK visa...
Took a break from my course creation today to help design some onboarding for
@rightmessageapp
's new product: RightBar! I mean, if I'm teaching design, I gotta keep designing, right?
Happy to wake up and see this on
@ProductHunt
this morning! A little tool I helped design takes where you're at in your business and gives you recommendations to increase $£€. Check out Value My Funnel on PH (it's free!)
I'm SO excited about this next update for Client Portal.
We're adding custom content pages which will allow you to create branded pages for your clients, include form embeds, videos, and more.
Check out the preview:
Just sent out my first customer interview request emails. Thanks to
@AsiaOrangio
's incredible talk at
@MicroConf
.
She's finally convinced me that I need to, you know, *talk* to my customers.
Anyone else find it annoying when a pricing page says things like $7/month and then 'billed annually' in really teeeeeny writing? I don’t mind paying annually but when I click pay and see “You’ve just been billed $84”... it doesn't exactly break the bank but feels icky.
Now I’m in my last year of my 20’s I’m finally getting around to reading
@ramit
’s I Will Teach You To Be Rich.
And like a lot of people, I wish I read it sooner.
Finally got around to using
@rightmessageapp
as a *customer* rather than a designer. Found a few flaws in the onboarding which we're now fixing, but overall.. WOW we built a really, really cool thing.
Will be doing a detailed writeup about how I'm using RM with my course soon👏
Alright, here it is...
*drumroll*
🍾 🥳 We've started a podcast!! 🎉
Join
@nathanjpowellUX
and myself for fortnightly conversations about running a business as a non-tech founder in the aptly named, The Non-Tech Founders Podcast!
👉 Read about it here:
I've been indecisive about whether to go to
#WCEU
this year, but I think I'm gonna do it.
Always a bit nerve-wracking going solo, so who else is going?
After 10 months of work, today we're so happy to release the new Smashing Book 6, with chapters:
🔮 Making Design Systems Work by
@laurium
⛳ Accessible Apps by
@marcysutton
🏡 CSS Grid Layouts by
@rachelandrew
🚂 CSS Custom Properties
@MikeRiethmuller
I'm 100% exhausted after a day on my own with a baby. Yet from the outside it looks so easy (sipping coffee at a cafe, wandering around a library, going to the shop to get milk).
Going to work is so much easier. Stay at home parents are amazing.
🔥 Work on my new venture, Project Pack, is ramping up! Aiming for a Black Friday launch of the most useful (and beautiful) templates, worksheets, and assets that you can use in your freelance business.
Since using Pomodoro’s I’ve found out that I can hold 25 minutes of full attention when designing but only about 12 when writing. No wonder my articles seem to take forever to write!
After a whirlwind week with Lucy in hospital with suspected meningitis (which turned out to be COVID), I'm very grateful to be back to work today with a happy, healthy baby.
Now just need to face my inbox 🥶 and reschedule All The Things.
I'm so glad I decided to make a Facebook group with my course on design. Seeing people actually follow the process and post their progress is awesome and judging by the results (even at these early stages) makes it clear that this stuff WORKS!
Does anyone have any great Weblow developers they could recommend? Ideally, someone you've actually worked with before to help narrow down the search 😀
The person of the week this week is
@laurium
. Laura is a designer turned product creator; she's been writing/speaking about designing and maintaining design systems. She also helps developers understand design (). Thanks for sharing and caring, Laura!
Did my first ever webinar yesterday with
@_jimmyrose
from
@contentsnare
.
Been putting webinars off for way too because they sounded scary. But GUESS WHAT?! We had a great time and it went swimmingly 🙃
Check out the replay:
One of my favourite UK conferences is coming up soon: Patterns Day is a whole day dedicated to design systems, pattern libraries, style guides, & all that lovely stuff.
Would recommend if any of the above even slightly interests you, you'll have a blast!
👋 Two things:
1) Design Fundamentals is now open indefinitely
2) For everyone who signs up, I'm giving away 2 free places in the course to those who need it
Enrol here:
Or apply for a free place here:
🙏
The best copy reads like your customers wrote it.
In the case of Design Academy, this is quite literally the case.
On sign up you get sent an email asking “what is your biggest frustration with design?”
The answers are then saved in one big Google sheet:
Spent the last couple of days re-recording Design Fundamentals. So much happier with the format now and really proud of this course.
Now it’s time to work on the screen recordings, assets, and editing.
A long way to go yet!
I usually take Fridays off but this week I’m recording a new video for the Client Portal redesign!
Really hope it turns out ok… because I don’t want to do this again for a while 😆
I <3 it when people pirate my product to Facebook groups that my friends are in. It feels so satisfying catching people out.
Then I think of all the people who are getting away with it and I get maaad.
I had to email out to everyone who pre-ordered Design Fundamentals that it’s delayed - I was dreading the response but very happy to say 99.9% of people were overwhelmingly supportive! V. grateful I have such nice customers - but that doesn’t mean I’ll get lazy. Full steam ahead!
Alright soooo... Design Fundamentals is finally open again! 🔥🎉
Made some massive changes which I've been working on since January so I'm extra excited to see what you all think:
