Media Statement 8 February 2025 Government of South Africa notes the USA Executive Order The government of South Africa has taken note of the latest executive order issued by President Trump. It is of great concern that the foundational premise of this order lacks factual accuracy and fails to recognize South Africa's profound and painful history of colonialism and apartheid. We are concerned by what seems to be a campaign of misinformation and propaganda aimed at misrepresenting our great nation. It is disappointing to observe that such narratives seem to have found favour among decision-makers in the United States of America. It is ironic that the executive order makes provision for refugee status in the US for a group in South Africa that remains amongst the most economically privileged, while vulnerable people in the US from other parts of the world are being deported and denied asylum despite real hardship. The Palestinian people have suffered unbelievably. >45,000 killed. >100,000 injured. Healthcare, educational system, housing— all destroyed. Trump's response? Forcibly remove 2.2 million people from their homes and turn Gaza into a billionaires' paradise. I don't think so.

Some 5.5 million Syrian refugees were absorbed by neighboring countries, including Turkey, Egypt and Jordan, during the Syrian civil war. But none are offering to take a single refugee from Gaza. The hypocrisy is breathtaking — these nations profess concern for the Palestinians but won’t lift a finger to help them.

I will NOT attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg. South Africa is doing very bad things. Expropriating private property. Using G20 to promote “solidarity, equality, & sustainability.” In other words: DEI and climate change. My job is to advance America’s national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism.

The Palestinian people have the right to simply live as human beings in their own land. The @UN is fully committed to peace, stability, and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

This is the face of a man who’s been planning for this all along. The plan was never peace. It was to bomb the entire place to rubble so that the survivors could be moved and the land could be taken. Genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid. Take your pick.

I think the American people wouldn’t care about giving billions in foreign aid if they felt like their lives were measurably improving , if buying a home was becoming easier and groceries cheaper. But it’s hard to get behind it when things feel like they’re getting worse .

The "is Trump bluffing about ethnic cleansing and US military occupation of Gaza" debate misses the fact that it doesn't matter for ISIS, al Qaeda and Hamas. They've just been handed an incredibly potent recruiting tool and will exploit it no matter what happens next.
