José Celso Barbosa was a Puerto Rican physician and political leader. He is known as the father of the statehood movement in Puerto Rico and was the first Puerto Rican to earn a medical degree in the U.S. He provided medical care on the island and during the Spanish-American War, he provided aid to wounded soldiers. Governor Charles H. Allen chose José to serve on the first U.S. appointed executive cabinet. He also founded the bilingual newspaper "El Tiempo" and was elected to the first Puerto Rican Senate in 1917.

Celia Cruz remains one of the most popular Latin artists to this day. The "Queen of Salsa," Celia began her career in her native country of Cuba, singing a variety of styles including rumba and bolero. In 1960, Celia left due to the Cuban Revolution. She found more fame in the U.S., releasing one of her most listened to albums "Celia & Johnny," featuring hits like "Quimbara." Celia received critical acclaim for her work, including two Grammys and three Latin Grammys. In 2024, a quarter was minted to honor Celia.

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The minister and civil rights activist advocated for peace and prosperity for people of color who suffered under an unjust system. Before his death, Dr. King sent a telegram to Cesar Chavez. Chavez had co-founded the United Famers Workers Union and was participating in a 25-day fast. Dr. King commended Chavez for his commitment and his bravery.
