@CameronWEF
If you consume drugs and go to/live in a country with a well-known zero-tolerance policy for it, then that’s just foolish. Unlucky for him, but he decided to play with fire. Would avoid doing the same in places like Singapore or Dubai as well.
A few weeks ago,
#China
announced that family visas are getting issued again. This would allow my mother after almost three years to finally see her first grandchild – which she never saw before. Today I can tell you that this is all a big joke! (1/9)
Not only in the outskirts of Shanghai, you see many Shanghainese locals sticking to their houses in remote villages or old neighborhoods. While the living conditions there may be not the best, patience can turn into a massive cash cow in the long-term. (1/6)
@tagesschau
Wer entscheidet über Lüge und Wahrheit? Was, wenn die angebliche Lüge die Wirklichkeit ist und man deshalb gesperrt wird? Die EU auf dem Weg in die Zensur – aber Hauptsache über China schimpfen!
How does it feel to visit Germany for the first time since living in Shanghai for many years? What changed, got worse and what is still the same? Get ready for a thread filled with personal observations and maybe a few rants. (1/26)
#Shanghai
still resolutely sprays indoor venues with disinfectant. Today’s target: A bar in the Jing'An district. I understand that some cities don’t want to give up on ZeroCovid, but can we at least stop this unscientific performance and handle things more professionally?
#China
My wife is working for the exhibition industry in
#Shanghai
and the current conditions are an absolute nightmare thanks to current
#Covid
policies. An example: The
#Shenzhen
government insists to open a 3-day fair in mid-December to give a strong signal to the economy. (1/3)
We just got a call from our neighborhood committee: „Your daughter was in a high-risk area with positive cases!“ This is absolutely impossible! She is 2 years old, can’t go anywhere alone, nobody else got any notifications and ALL of our codes are still green.
#Shanghai
#China
Seems there is an unclear
#Covid
situation in the
#Shanghai
Wild Animal Park. My mother is there with my 2-years old daughter and in-laws. The gates are closed and nobody is allowed to leave the park. People don’t know what’s going on and there are rumors about a positive case.
Until the last minute, it was not clear if Lufthansa flight LH728 would be allowed to fly from Frankfurt to
#Shanghai
or not. An extremely stressful experience because my mother had finally the chance to meet her granddaughter for the first time in her life. (1/12)
While Western media often claims that the Chinese government can just take away people’s homes, the huge compensations are not mentioned at all. In reality, many people are hoping exactly for that: Exchanging their inconvenient life against a new prosperous one over night. (6/6)
„Even Winnie the Pooh is forbidden in dystopian China!“, is a claim which I still regularly hear when talking with friends and strangers about
#China
. Get your facts straight and don’t blindly believe every brainfart from Falun Gong, Adrian Zenz or other Anti-China propagandists.
6 of 8 family members here in
#Shanghai
caught
#Covid
this week. Except of my two years old daughter, everyone got vaccinated with three shots (mostly Sinopharm/Sinovac). The grandparents (80+) and my father in law already recovered and feeling well again.
People have a negative mindset and closing their eyes from problems and solutions. They feel morally superior and in their arrogance don’t realize that they are massively falling behind. They are unwilling to acknowledge that other countries becoming more advanced. (26/26)
That means: They cannot participate in normal life for 12 days if they visit this 3-day event. No surprise that none of the involved parties is willing to go there. The expected outcome: Empty halls with big screens instead of exhibitors and visitors as happened before. (3/3)
Today I want to invite you to a little walk across Chuansha Town here in Pudong. The weather was terrible, but this did not stop me from having a two hours long walk – my first remarkable activity here in
#Shanghai
since 11 weeks. Lean back and enjoy this depressive trip! (1/16)
Three days after testing requirements got eased, numbers in
#Shanghai
start to „magically“ drop as well. I am not sure if it’s a good idea to intentionally publish meaningless low numbers just for the sake of giving people a wrong sense of safety while cases will explode. (1/3)
A short trip straight into the middle of nowhere, but still close to
#Shanghai
: Anji County, Zhejiang. Beautiful nature, silence, almost no people, and very comfortable 24 degrees. (1/3)
It has been a nasty rainy day in
#Shanghai
– and running into a 大白 at the elevator doesn’t make it better. Took me a second to realize that it’s only a delivery guy who is using the protective suit against the rain. It brings back memories of last year’s upcoming lockdown …
Many places in
#Shanghai
insist again on scanning and showing the health code today. My wife’s office gave the order that maximum 50% of their staff should come to the office to avoid that everyone gets infected with
#Covid
. There is definitely an atmosphere of fear in the air.
Welcome in
#Shanghai
! After a flight of almost 12 hours from Frankfurt, a lot of steps were waiting for my mother until she would finally make it to a quarantine facility. The entire process from arrival to the hotel room took around 5 hours. (1/10)
@wangxiangweihk
Honestly, it doesn’t look special. The hospital is busy, but emergency departments always look like that. But clearly not overwhelmed and calm. Same for the morgue. A low double-digit number of deaths is fine for a X million people city. Maybe just lack of staff due to Covid.
However, since the claimed house and ground can be considered as huge, so can be the compensation: They will receive THREE (!) brand-new apartments which are currently under construction and an additional 3 million ¥ on top of it. (5/6)
I love
#Shanghai
, but when it comes to food, nothing can beat spicy dishes from Sichuan. No matter how much chili it has, it can never be too much! 🌶️ I hope the weather will heat me up in a similar way within the coming weeks, even though it was warm today. I can’t stand winter!
Rumors are making the round on WeChat that
#China
will fully open its borders to foreigners from January 9th, only requiring 0+3 (three days of health monitoring; no quarantine anymore).
@Dimi
@ZichenWanghere
What a nonsense. I am happy Chinese airlines can still fly over Russia. No way I waste 2-3 additional hours during a long-distance flight just because some countries have a problem over which airspace I cross.
Epidemic prevention signs in toilets are reaching the next level: Use the urinal on the right if you came back from other provinces, otherwise use the ones on the left. Also spotted a creative version of a venue code at the mirror of an office toilet in
#Shanghai
.
#China
Flew from Shanghai to Frankfurt. Of all the places I travel, Germany is showing the most signs of an economy in trouble. Deep trouble. Frankfurt is a ghost town compared to what it was. It’s their financial hub. Everything is silent and empty. Germany is in trouble.
Here we go again: A week full of great family gatherings accompanied with a lot of brown food. I am not a big fan of the traditional dishes of
#Shanghai
so I keep quiet for a while to avoid the „Next time you marry a Sichuan girl!“ comments. Happy Chinese New Year, everyone! 🧧🎉
@thisischaniece
My favorite are the people who tell me that I have to go straight into a concentration camp if I post a Winnie Pooh image on WeChat because it’s strictly forbidden. 🤡
#Covid
cases are rising in
#Shanghai
so we used the weekend as an opportunity to escape from the city and visit Nianhuawan – a scenic area famous for Chan Buddhism (a strain similar to Japanese Zen Buddhism) close to Wuxi which can be reached within 2 hours by car. (1/6)
Two examples why the massive drop of reported covid-cases in
#Shanghai
probably does not reflect the reality. A friend and her husband got fever and their selftests went positive. They neither report the results to the volunteers nor participate in the PCR-tests anymore. (1/3)
Okay, I know
#China
loves to put a huge amount of money into construction, but building two artificial mountains made of steel and concrete in the middle of a flat place like
#Shanghai
is a bit too much. At least I don’t have to leave Pudong anymore to go hiking.
I don’t know what’s the matter here in
#Shanghai
, but driving a car becomes an absolute madness whenever a single drop of rain appears in the sky. Even the outskirts of Pudong are no longer immune to it – but still much better compared to the other side of the river.
So my father in law decided to go to a colleague’s wedding last weekend – not attending would have meant „losing face“ for him. We argued a lot to prevent him from going. Guess who tested positive now? So I expect Christmas to be ruined for everyone since we all live together …
@AndyBxxx
I can confirm. In our compound they just burned dozens of death people in the stairway and the only thing remains are the surgical masks which they were wearing. Sad times indeed! 🤡
@JaredTNelson
Same for me and my daughter. First thought it’s our fourth round of Covid within 12 months, but it seems thats not the case. Compared to Covid, the symptoms are much worse for me: Fever in the beginning and now two weeks of terrible dry cough, headache and neck pain.
So, international travel restrictions in
#China
got mostly lifted, but the Pudong International Airport in
#Shanghai
is still abandoned. There is only one outbound international flight to Frankfurt and the only crowded place here is its check-in queue.
Today, one year ago,
#Shanghai
had no plans for a lockdown. That time, our compound was already closed since a week and two more months should follow. An eventful uncertain time, both exciting and depressing. This year, we can start the morning with a trip instead of a PCR test.
Things are always uncomplicated in
#China
: You like the fresh draft beer from the restaurant next door? No problem, just take 2.5 liters of your favorite beer back home in a plastic bag!
@tagesschau
Absolute Schwachsinns-Regel. Hier in China kursieren Varianten, die es schon seit Monaten in Europa gibt. Aber Hauptsache, neue Varianten aus „freundlichen Ländern“ wie der USA können ungebremst importiert werden. Deutschland macht sich erneut zum Affen!
The first weekend after months of lockdown in
#Shanghai
. Time for a trip to the beautiful Binjiang Forest Park with our family! Shanghai is not only a shiny city – you can also find a lot of peaceful places full of nature. (1/6)
New cases in
#Shanghai
are literally exploding. Nevertheless, from tomorrow on no PCR tests are required anymore when taking the crowded subway. Let’s see how it will goes, but be prepared to get infected soon even though if numbers will magically go down as seen in other cities.
I don't really care much about surveillance here in
#Shanghai
because it is probably one of the reasons why the crime rate is extremely low – but hell, almost 30 cameras and supportive devices are a lot for a single traffic light at a simple intersection.
#China
Another sign that
#Shanghai
is putting less resources into
#ZeroCovid
measures: Still no result for my PCR test after 10 hours while in the last six months it usually took around 5 hours. In addition, no one was concerned that I entered the subway with an expired health-code.
Next level absurdity after arrival in
#Frankfurt
: PCR tests made in
#Shanghai
before departure were suddenly not valid anymore. After picking up their baggage, passengers got escorted to a heavily crowded antigen testing station within the intercity train station. (1/4)
So what’s the conclusion? Don’t get me wrong: I really enjoyed my trip and quickly realized how much I missed it to be back! But after years in Shanghai, I also immediately noticed that everything in Germany is inconvenient, slow and heavily politicized. (25/26)
China is a common target as well and one of the favorite enemies besides of Russia. I saw more than one protest from some suspicious Uyghur initiatives where the protesters didn’t look like Uyghurs at all. Protest for the sake of protest to feel morally superior? (10/26)
So close and still so far: A short visit at the quarantine hotel to deliver some essential goods – and to give my mother the chance to see us and her granddaughter for the first time from afar. Everything is super silent and busy at the same time at this place.
#Shanghai
#China
My wife can always spend a long time in
#IKEA
so I usually feel a bit bored there. During one of the last visits I used my time to transform all of those wooden hands into making naughty middle finger gestures. Seems this kind of art is not longer possible. So sad! 🖕🏻
So, it’s safe to say that
#ZeroCovid
in
#China
is officially over. I expect that the few remaining restrictions like mandatory quarantine for travelers coming from abroad are getting abolished very soon. Goodbye, Health Code! It’s time for you to go and I will not miss you!
Last Saturday I tested positive for
#Covid
and had strong symptoms for exactly half a day: 39.5 fever, 100 pulse, extreme body pain and chills. What remains is a mild dry cough and that deep black line – which freaks me out because it stays that dark since day one. (1/3)
When we visited them this weekend, we were wondering why their lawn was looking so neglected. Usually, they take good care of it and plant all kind of salad, radish and other kinds of vegetables. It was always a bit of a self-sustaining farmer life for them. (3/6)
Here we go again: The entire compound is enforced to participate in PCR testing this morning – even though we have ZERO cases in Pudong.
#Shanghai
seems worried to lose control over Covid again. But I am sorry, the city will not be able to win this fight in the long-term.
#China
Arriving in Germany, my VPN habit kicked in immediately. But another reason was the incredible slow speed of mobile network which usually is an indicator in China for blocked websites. Unfortunately, slow mobile network is still quite common in Germany. (2/26)
Stunning sunset yesterday in the Shenyuan Park in
#Shanghai
– located inside of the World Expo area in Pudong. Not crowded at all, even though it was a sunny day. Seems people are now more interested in again visiting malls and restaurants after they recovered from
#Covid
.
I was surprised when I saw that a couple of previously closed PCR testing stations across Jing'an were suddenly back again and open for testing. Getting ready for the second wave? After the big outbreak four months ago immunity naturally starts to fade …
#Shanghai
#China
Same situation when parking: No automated number plate scanning. Instead, people have to get a ticket before entering and have to wait in a queue to pay before leaving. Compared to Shanghai it feels inconvenient, but people don’t care because they don’t know it better. (6/26)
The problem: Organizers, exhibitors and visitors entering Shenzhen have to isolate themselves for 7 days first. After returning back home, they have to face similar restrictions: For example, you cannot enter public places for 5 days if you come back to Shanghai. (2/3)
Even in large cities, there are always spots without connection or at best Edge (2G) only. A broader availability of 5G is noticeable, but the situation will probably worsen again, as 5G from Huawei (leading in Germany) has to get removed thanks to US intervention. (3/26)
Meanwhile in Germany: No masks, no tests, but party and beer! Not sure what bothers me more: Zero-Covid and daily testing with no end in sight or letting huge crowds spread
#Covid
as efficient as possible? Is there no way in between!? But I have to say: I miss that madness!
Relatives of my in-laws own this house in a small village in the north of Chuansha in Pudong. While the house is big and has many rooms and a lawn, the location is very remote and far away from the next mall and subway station. (2/6)
The answer: The government has other plans for their ground, but they don’t know the details yet. They have to leave this place soon and parts of the neighborhood already got bulldozed. Of course, giving up a place associated with so many memories gives them mixed feelings. (4/6)
@faznet
Ja, lasst die USA ruhig weiter warnen. Ändert nichts daran, dass immer mehr Länder sich weigern, nach deren Pfeife zu tanzen. Nur Europa lernt es scheinbar nie, auf eigenen Füßen zu stehen.
I still saw many signs reminding people to keep distance and washing hands thoroughly, but didn’t see any masks at all. The weather was fantastic: I never had two weeks of almost 30 degrees in October before. The clean air and silence around me almost hurt my senses! (24/26)
In general, mobile acceptance in Germany feels like a decade behind. I went to the zoo in Frankfurt which offers a dedicated fast track for people who bought their ticket online via a QR code. However, people prefer to wait in the queue for an hour to use cash instead. (5/26)
Just had a melancholic walk to our compounds gate and what are my tired eyes seeing out there? The street is packed with people, some of them without masks – and even the Family Mart is open! Suddenly rising impatientness in our compounds WeChat group. I hope we can go out soon!
Welcome to one of the last remaining pedestrian streets in Chuansha Town of Pudong: Xinyuan Road! This place perfectly shows the massive impact of the rapidly changing consumer behavior of the last two decades on the retail landscape throughout
#Shanghai
. (1/5)
Germans, as usual, love to complain and you hear people of all ages talking about politics nonstop. Everyone’s opinion is divided into black or white and each side is targeting a specific group as the root of all problems: Leftists, racists, refugees. (9/26)
I ended the last few hours of the year with a PCR test and it seems that I can let
#Covid
finally behind. 2022 was a tough one, but I am optimistic that 2023 will become better in every aspect. Happy New Year,
#Shanghai
!
A bill of 650 € for 10 days. A last PCR-test including swabbing smartphone, door and cups. And disinfecting all of the luggage. That’s it: Bye Bye, Quarantine!
It’s a beautiful but freezing day in
#Shanghai
. This time we don’t travel during Chinese New Year, so we enjoy our free days with some unspectacular activities. Today: Taking the ferry between Pudong and Yangpu for 2¥.
#China
In the morning,
#Shanghai
reported almost 300 new positive cases. This afternoon, additional 14 cases were found in the wild. Numbers are growing fast since two weeks despite of strict policies – and for Shanghai there is no easing of testing requirements in sight. (1/3)
Train stations are old, dirty, vandalized and insecure. You see junkies and weird groups everywhere. Not a place where you want to hang out alone at night. Taxis are an alternative but come at a high cost as well. Expect at least 50€/400¥ for a short 20 minutes ride. (17/26)
Every step is clearly regulated while spending 10 days in a quarantine hotel after arriving in
#China
. A thread about the experience during the stay at the Crowne Plaza in
#Shanghai
. (1/10)
Today I got the honor to leave our compound again for a short walk – so I decided to visit a nearby park. On my way I purposely passed the office of our Neighborhood Committee to which I complained yesterday. Three women were looking at me and saying: It's him! (1/3)
Homeless individuals and beggars are also much more visible and intrusive than before and are not afraid entering restaurants to ask you for cigarettes or even a sip from your drink. (8/26)
One of the reasons why I prefer to live in Chuansha, far away from the city center of
#Shanghai
: It is still an authentic place in a city full of expats and international brands.
Today's
#ZeroCovid
policy changes will result in even more cases across
#China
over the next months. By not tracing close contacts of close contacts anymore, loopholes are likely. There is a difference if you precautionary lock down an entire building or just an apartment. (1/5)
International arrivals at the
#Shanghai
Pudong International Airport are definitely normalizing: It was massively crowded! Thanks to my Chinese wife and mixed-national daughter, I could avoid waiting for hours in the foreigner queue and use the lane for Chinese nationals. (1/2)
What all of them have in common: They are scared. Scared that the entire building is getting deported to a quarantine camp. Scared that their belongings are getting destroyed during disinfection. Scared that the community will miss the Zero-Covid goal because of them. (3/3)
What baffles me: You almost see only old people outside and in restaurants. I wonder where is the younger generation in their twenties/thirties!? Does the majority of them not value good food, sightseeing or trips within the country? Or did everything got too expensive? (11/26)
@MaryGao
Well, within two weeks here in Shanghai we went from „I don’t know anyone with Covid“ to „I don’t know anyone without Covid“, so the numbers could be correct.
Good morning, Frankfurt! After four years in Shanghai, it’s time for three weeks of reverse culture shock. I’m looking forward to bring my daughter to Germany for her first time and expect a huge contrast after many eventful years as well as things which will never change.
The more developed a country gets, the more bothersome it is to take the train. Stuck in Yiwu, 300 kilometers away from
#Shanghai
. Even though it’s just an ordinary weekend there is not a single ticket available anymore. Ticket machines don’t work with foreign passports as usual.
Getting free water or tea is standard in every restaurant in China. But at what cost!? Well, I don’t know, but in Germany you can pay 4€/30¥ for a 0,2l water. Bringing a drink or snack from outside? Don’t even dare! And also don’t dare to forget giving a generous tip. (21/26)
The best place to enjoy the May holidays in
#Shanghai
: As far away as possible from the city and crowded tourist attractions. One of many reasons why living in the „wilderness of Pudong“ is superior compared to the other side of the river.
#China
Is online shopping an alternative? Unfortunately not, because delivery times are much slower than before. On Amazon, I often have to wait for three days or more. In Shanghai, I can get many things delivered to my place within minutes or the next day latest. (15/26)
Contactless payments are on the rise, but mobile payments? Not so much. When I ask for Apple Pay, even the staff of big shops in the city is completely overwhelmed. All smaller shops or restaurants I visited didn’t accept any form of mobile payment. (4/26)
The hope for my 67 years old mother to finally see her two years old granddaughter for the first time in her life. Destroyed in seconds. Thank you for nothing! (9/9)
Compared to 2019, you see a massive surge in Ukrainian women and children and a further increase in immigration. When I visited playgrounds with my daughter, I was often the only German. However, I had no bad experience and everyone played with everyone. (7/26)
