🚨New paper🚨 studying how principals and schools improve as principals gain experience. Short answer: they don't, on average, using data from Tennessee, Oregon, and New York City. With one key caveat... 1/N

Annual advice to PhD applicants: Do not go into debt for a PhD. It doesn't matter how perfectly the program fits, how amazing the faculty are, how passionate you feel. Unless you're independently wealthy, you don't go without full funding. This is a hill I will die on.

@ginnyhogan_ I was very over the Nashville millennial dating scene and went to a bar with a guy where I opened with “FYI I hate IPA!” He looked taken aback and quietly said, “I don’t even know what that is.” We’ve been married three years.

Can we stop saying “teacher quality?” We can measure teacher effectiveness, instructional quality, etc. But we cannot and should not claim to measure the quality of a human being based on whatever set of observables we happen to have in our data.

@duane_g_watson In my first days in Japan someone at a party used the word “hentai.” I asked what it meant and over the loud music I thought they said “perfect.” So I spent days giving the OK sign and saying HENTAI! until my friend finally asked why I kept saying pervert.

It would be cool if all these "early career" and "emerging scholar" grants would go by clock years instead of saying "degree earned after x date." This would be more equitablep for people who did post-docs, health/parental leave, or even multiple years on the job market.

Daycare is so different from when I was a kid. My son’s daycare is all about soft touches and self regulation. In the 90s my daycare had a kid who would try to bite my butt while yelling “I’m Old Yeller and I have RABIES!” and the teacher was just like, maybe he likes you.

A gentle plea: seeing lots of papers/threads suggest that LEAs be “required” to better gather, organize, and report staffing/hiring data. A noble goal, but… Most LEAs (and some SEAs) do *not* have the capacity to do this. May I suggest changing “required” to “supported.”

Using 10 years' worth of state data through 2016, researchers found that low-performing teachers in grades 3 through 5 were more likely to be reassigned to non-tested early grades than their more effective peers. via @ChalkbeatTN #ece #earlyed

Greatly enjoyed chatting with @DaniKSloan and Jared Covili from @uennews about the realities of shifting to online learning in higher ed. See references to: balancing empathy and routine, using Zoom, and the value of reality TV + Girl Scout cookies to get us through it all.

“Seven in 10 first-year teachers report having a mentor, but only one in three report that their mentors frequently engage with them in high-leverage coaching activities.” Would love to learn more about how mentorship QUALITY (not just dose) relates to new teacher outcomes.

@JessicaCalarco @tressiemcphd Things shouldn’t be this way, but they are this way. I spent a lot of time last year zooming from the closet so I wouldn’t disturb nap time; an escape room would have been most welcome!
