I recently found out my grandma did a thesis in 1957! And, her thesis was about something I care a lot about and focus on in my own work. I wish I could talk to her about it, that would be so cool. 🧵1/11
Excited to share I've been promoted to Associate Professor w/tenure at
@UMDCollegeofEd
! I'm so lucky to be doing what I'm doing. Thanks to all who have/continue to support me - shout out to the best colleagues, mentors, students, & friends. Truly a team effort…now back to work👌
Some news! I will be joining
@vupeabody
department of special education as an associate professor—excited about the new opportunities, partnerships, continuing collaborations, and coming back to Nashville👍👍
It's a strange, sad, and unpredictable time, but I'm excited to share that I'll be joining the fine folks at
@UMDCollegeofEd
@UofMaryland
in August--super excited for this next adventure! 1/2
Our social network analysis tutorial is out in Psychological Methods! We aimed to provide a useful overview of the method and demonstrate how to apply SNA to applied classroom research - we include a sample dataset and R code for analyses.
Thanks for leading,
@MichaelDBro
!
Anyone else have stories to share to humor a semi-humored and definitely embarrassed junior faculty member sitting in a hotel lobby because housekeeping is cleaning the room he doesn’t need anymore?

@UMD_TRILab
Fall 2023! If you are interested in language, social, & behavioral development & interventions, supporting teachers, SLPs, & other educators, improving learning contexts—feel free to email me directly!
Silver lining is now I have some time and will go on a run (the river on this side of Canada looks great), and I’ll be able to make all my Zoom calls I had set as tentative. If anyone wants to catch up, I have some time😂 15/18
I have learned my lesson here today for sure. To anyone who hasn’t yet made this mistake, I suggest an extra minute of confirmatory effort to make sure this doesn’t happen to you. I *for sure* assumed I would never do this 14/18
Ran to get an Uber (which I had just downloaded because I am a Lyft user in the US) which then showed me this weird line across the continent. I thought for sure it was a weird wifi thing or the Verizon TravelPass roaming missing with me (also first time user) 7/18
OMG my brother in law, the gift that never stops giving, was tired of being sent to get rice every day so he decided buy in bulk, talked to the shop about it, wires got crossed, now there is a literal TRUCK FILLED WITH RICE outside the house and my sister is losing her shit lmfao
New paper out in School Psychology with my awesome collagues. Children's
#language
skills were significantly associated with friendship centrality & reciprocity. In
#kindergarten
, kids who enter school w/lower language skills have fewer peers who nominate them as their friend 1/
Grateful and excited to be able to recruit 4 PhD students to join us Fall 25!
More to come, but please reach out if you are thinking about grad school next year! Broad focus is on the use, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-based practices in school contexts
#impsci
After all the anticipation and flight delays, I will be missing
#MCLS2019
because I am in Calgary and not in Ottawa. Some of you in the
#language
and
#arithmetic
session might have noticed 2/18
Got it in the Uber and then, needless to say
#awkwardmoment
, I got out shortly after without leaving the hotel (Westin Calgary not Westin Ottawa FYI) 8/18
Excited to share our new paper in
@JCCAP_Editor
! We present effect size distributions to provide field-based benchmarks for interpreting observed effects of interventions for improving outcomes for young children with autism. We hope this work contributes in a few ways 1/6
Booked flights and hotels in a rush, both are Canadian cities I’ve never been to that sit nicely on the south side of a river and have similar looking night-time pictures of their respective Westins 3/18

Only noticed something was off when someone on my panel (
@davidjpurpura
[note his immediate reaction was: you must tweet this]) emailed asking me if I was coming to our talk (he included a smiley face so I thought he was joking🙂) 5/18

Soon to find out that I was on a different time zone (big kicker!), and thought maybe there was some weird CST/EST thing going on across the border🇨🇦 6/18
Really special time jn Savannah this weekend celebrating my 爷爷’s 95th. Today is his birthday and we just finished a tasty lunch before my flight home 👴🏼🤍
Thank you Dean
@doctorkag
and
@UMDCollegeofEd
for the thoughtful gift! Nice addition to the office but who knows how long the chocolate will stick around😋
It has been really busy with grant projects wrapping up in schools (last week of school was last week), managing a bunch of things, writing grants, etc. However, context clues matter! 9/18
Just re-read a reviewer's comments to try and find the useful points buried under a giant heap of disrespect. A good reminder to keep my reviews encouraging and constructive while also pointing out awesome and well-done aspects. I do, in fact, believe we're all on the same team.
A student from my meta-analysis class a few semesters ago just emailed asking me to help respond to minor revisions about using prediction intervals and choice of publication bias assessments ❤️😭😭👏
In our new systematic review, we report on the characteristics of students in the literature identified has having emotional disturbance and compare research samples to national population statistics 1/6

colleagues and friends, I missed the 1st meeting in Oxford and given these events, am missing it again. Surely hoping to make it next year – there’s so much work going on I want/need to know more about. Third time’s a charm, or so I hear

Cancelled travel plans and made a last minute Thanksgiving dinner. Missing my friends and family, but thankful to be healthy and to have the time cook! 🙏🦃🤍
Paper rejected after a first submission being under review for 6+ months.
Good feedback🙏, shout out to everyone also sticking with it—looking forward to revisiting next week and picking new journal next week👍
This paper is going to be so helpful, especially for class and peer review. Excited to dig in!:
Avoiding common mistakes in meta-analysis: Understanding the distinct roles of Q, I-squared, tau-squared, and the prediction interval in reporting heterogeneity
So so humbled to receive this

! This cancels out all the rejections (many!) I have endured in the last year. Shout out to my students who ace the ~5. Assessment~ homeworks! Congrats to all the other winners 👏👏

: When asking people before my trip what there is to do in Calgary, no one had been. I have several friends who went to Carleton U and I also know a lot of people love (and have been to) Ottawa 13/18

: The flight time from Chicago to Calgary is 20-30 mins longer than to Ottawa. I brushed it off for weather-related changes, as a bunch of us (e.g.,
@sarahpowellphd
[you won the race in the end]) were being delayed or rerouted over a few days 10/18

On Friday, I met with a student to go over his project. After thanking me many times, he asked how I was doing given events of racism toward the AAPI community. We had a good talk and went into our weekends.
I’ll never forget his kindness and the sincerity of that conversation.

: I looked up and made sure I could use Lyft at this conference (yes, Ottawa has Lyft), but landed to YYC with my Lyft app telling me they don’t run in that location yet🤔 12/18

@OpenAcademics
One paper took 5 years, 8 journals (20 revisions over 7 rejects) make it through, another recent paper took a lot of work and was “pretty useless” and “added nothing new”—just a sampling of my experiences but we keep on keeping on 👍

Field of Flags on the National Mall. Pretty amazing and sobering, representing the 400,000 Americans killed by the pandemic and the absence of people being able to attend the inauguration.
