Our report into the 2019 general election has been published this morning. It’s the work of Commissioners from across our Party coming together to understand our terrible loss, the long term trends that led us there and the mountain we have to climb. (1/2)
We've published Red Shift - the first detailed voter segmentation since Sunak became PM. It shows how far Labour has come in so little time. But there's a long way between poll leads and booths so we chart the path from here... Full report: & more👇(1/12)
🌊The tide is turning
The coast has consistently backed winning causes over the last 40 years - Thatcher, Blair, Leave, Johnson...
Now nearly half (44%) of coastal voters back Labour, while support for the Conservatives has fallen by 20pts since 2019.
UPDATE: Not all our commissioners could be confirmed before Xmas so we will be adding others in the New Year from local government & the Trade Union movement. Our commission was formed in the spirit of reaching out & creating a space for discussion so open to more feedback🙂
Today we publish 'A New Business Model for Britain' by Shadow Chancellor
@RachelReevesMP
. It sets out the challenges our economy faces today, and how a
@UKLabour
government would rebuild our economic strength. Report here: & a few highlights below…(1/5)

Wide polling leads for the Labour party have become the norm. Seat projections with these figures usually result in a Labour landslide and Tory wipeout.
New analysis by Labour Together has modelled two scenarios which show there is cause for caution despite Labour’s wide lead🧵
We do not think it is impossible to win again. Our report should be mobilising not paralysing. We set out how our Party and movement can meet the challenge of rebuilding our voter coalition so we can win again and change our country for the better. (2/2)
Today we're launching Labour’s Covenant, a plan for national reconstruction. It is intended to lay the groundwork for building a new approach to Labour politics for the new era, drawing on Labour’s own history and traditions.

🌾A new countryside alliance
The traditional wisdom is that rural voters back the Conservatives. Now, for the first time since 2001, Labour leads amongst rural voters.
34% of those in villages or rural areas now say they would vote Labour - a 17pt swing towards the party
In 2019, five backed Johnson. Now, just two do. If Labour can hold onto this support, a Red Shift is possible... (3/11) (h/t on data viz to

Twice as many Britons think their local schools are getting worse (39%) than think they are getting better (19%). This is also true for parents - 41% think local schools are getting worse.
"Conservative failure has gifted levelling up to Labour. Levelling up is not a policy option to occupy half a page of a manifesto jostling with other retail offers. It should be Labour’s national mission, heart and soul, across the UK."

A Labour victory is far from certain. Labour must hold firm on the tougher line it is taking on issues like crime, borders and defence. And it must propose economic policies that speak to the profound sense of insecurity that people feel. (7/11)
Great write up of a new report by our Chief Economist,
@kferriter

The paper, out tomorrow, shows the shocking state of Britain’s economy, but also how new investment in the public realm - across energy, housing & infrastructure - could rebuild Britain.

We polled 391 Conservative councillors via
@Savanta_UK
. The results? Not good for the PM.
A quarter (23%) of Sunak's own councillors think that ditching him *before* the May local elections would improve the party's fortunes.
Tory grassroots split over replacing Rishi Sunak before local elections: Four in 10 party councillors say regicide would make result worse on May 2 but almost a quarter say it could help them keep seats

🚨Labour Together's
@joshuahwilliams
on our polling in the Telegraph today: "Labour is now leading in rural areas, far beyond its traditional heartlands. More Tory seats are now at risk from Labour than at any time in 20 years."
🌳No longer the party of the countryside
On every environmental issue we tested, Britons were around twice as likely to say they trusted Labour vs the Conservatives.
On no issue is the gap greater than sewage, which 35% of Britons trust Labour to handle over the Conservatives.

While the data still all points to a Labour victory, a few small shifts in voter behaviour could shrink Labour’s lead significantly. A more dramatic change could wipe out a majority entirely.
However wide the poll leads might look today, a Labour majority is far from certain.
Today, we publish ‘A Peerless Democracy’, a new paper that shows Britons profound dissatisfaction with our democracy. Full report here: & a few highlights below… (1/8)

It’s not only rural voters who take pride in Britain’s countryside. Asked why they feel proud to be British, a quarter (26%) of Britons cite the countryside, behind only our history (29%) and the NHS (44%).
"Labour’s task in this new world order is to stand up for the labour interest by building a fairer and more resilient national economy across the villages, towns and cities of the UK, creating jobs you can raise a family on in every community."

However, Conservative strategists will look at polls like this one with fear. Seats that they could once take for granted, must now be fought tooth-and-nail.
The reason? A ‘Portillo moment’ could happen anywhere…

A fantastic event in Parliament last night on
#securonomics
. With our deepest thanks to all our speakers, each hugely edifying in their own right, together as good a panel as you will see.
1. The share of voters who currently say they “don’t know” how they will vote is large (17%)
2. The strength of the Reform vote feels questionable
3. The support of some of those who have switched to the Labour Party from the Conservatives could still be ‘soft-switchers’

🚨NEW report: 'National Securonomics', by
@Hamish4Lincs
This report - which looks at national security and industrial strategy - is the first in a series of papers Labour Together are commissioning on the big geopolitical questions facing Britain.
This scenario would see Labour’s lead over the Conservatives reduced to 13pts. Projecting this into seats gives Labour 364 seats and a majority of 78.
While this is still high, it is far lower than the 192-seat majority predicted based on current voting intention.
