@GuthrieGF
That God “changed Saul’s name to Paul.” Didn’t happen. He had a Hebrew name (Shaul) and as a Roman citizen had a Latin name too (Paulus). He is referred to as Paul not after his conversion, but after he starts ministering to the Gentiles.
Pledging allegiance to the American flag, or the flag of any nation, during a worship service or denominational gathering, is idolatry. 100% idolatry. I said what I said.
@WNCathedral
I thought this MUST be a misunderstanding. Surely they weren’t charging money, I thought. But I clicked through and they are! I can see doing tickets (free ones) for crowd control, but not charging admission for CHURCH!
If I forget to take my antidepressant, I feel it. My mind and body notice. I wish I didn’t have to take medication. But I’m learning not to be ashamed of it any more than I’m ashamed to wear contact lenses: my brain needs help just like my eyes do. That’s all it is.
My own thread about the rainbow: evangelicals, maybe make sure you know what the Bible actually says before you start telling the rest of us what the rainbow symbolizes in Genesis.
@MikeCiandella
Right. It was marketed as a “tradition” in 2005. Never would have become a thing were it not for social media & parents trying to one-up each other.
This is a
@RevDaniel
stan account, and let me just tell you all that being a lectionary preacher has made me a much better preacher because it forces me to wrestle with texts I might not otherwise preach from.
Some guy on Faux News is talking about $90 turkeys? They were 99 cents a pound at Kroger. I got my kids (and their mom) a nice 20-lb turkey for $20. Thing is, Fox viewers are so gullible they’ll believe it.
I was on call at work tonight and did not get called in. Really glad I didn’t, because it meant I got to attend Zoom Bible Study with
@StJohnsDixie
.
@RevDaniel
is absolutely a treasure. So grateful for his ministry in my life. Y’all just don’t even know.
I understand the sentiment, but for me it’s not about being a “seasonal purist,” it’s about hating the way capitalism has trampled and trashed the liturgical calendar, which is fundamental to my spiritual life.
I got home at a decent hour last night for a change, so I watched 4 episodes of “Schmigadoon.” As one who has played for/conducted many musicals and knows ALL the show tunes because of playing for so many auditions, I loved it. The dialogue, lyrics, and music are all on point.
God “hangs up his war bow,” so to speak. As a promise/reminder to WHOM? Not us. To God. God says, “When the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant.”
After the flood, God says, “I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature.”
@rywig
I’m in favour of calling things what they are—e.g. you won’t catch me calling the narthex a “lobby,” BUT when I heard an Episcopalian refer to the chalice-bearer as the “chalcifer,” I cackled. I mean I’m bougie but that’s a whole other level of bougie.

@magikarpolycarp
Meanwhile something like 80% of single, straight evangelical Christians are sexually active and no one bats an eye. Double standard, anyone?
This bow is one of many, many “covenant memorials” in the Bible. Moses was told to put the tablets of the law, a jar of manna, and Aaron’s staff in the Ark of the Covenant “as memorials before YHWH.”
My aunt’s funeral is in about 3 hours. With the exception of her & my uncle, I’ve been minimized, discounted, ignored, discouraged, insulted, humiliated, passed over, and despised all my life by the people who are supposed to care.
@tweetjjtweet
Youngest was born in 2006, so ours never did it. I hate that so many parents think they “have” to do it, like it’s something that’s always been done. Um, no.
My “heritage” includes tobacco plantation owners in Virginia and NC, which means slave owners. Not something to celebrate: it’s something to repent of!
"My Confederate flag isn't about hate, it's about honoring my Southern heritage!"
Nope. It's a hate symbol, hon.
I honor my German heritage by eating sauerkraut and potato salad, not flying a swastika from the back of a butt-ugly pickup. Go eat some cornbread and shut up.
Every Sunday is about Jesus: not Mom, Dad, organised labor, the USA, or the military. It amazes me how churches that wouldn’t dream of celebrating Trinity or Transfiguration will fall all over themselves to celebrate civil observances. And in so doing, we alienate & hurt people.
If going to church on Mother's Day is simply an exercise in holding in your tears until you can unleash them in the car on the way out of the parking lot, just stay home today. It's okay. You won't lose your salvation and the church won't fold. You aren't the only one that has to
Conservatives think it’s hilarious to mock people with disabilities, from Trump making fun of a reporter’s disability to his making fun of Biden’s stutter to Ann Coulter doubling down on her use of the “r” word to all of you who throw around the term “libtard.”
So these items, by being in the Ark, were right in front of God’s face, so to speak, as “covenant memorials” emblems to remind God of God’s own covenant. Just like the Rainbow was there to remind God of God’s covenant.
I went to the party. Stayed about 90 minutes. It was crowded but I saw some people I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was nice. Hot with all those people in there. Went outside on the deck but then it started raining. Overall though I’m glad I pushed through and went.
If you’ve never been to an evangelical church, it may surprise you that the reading of scripture as a discrete element of worship is often non-existent. The preacher will drop in pull quotes to back up his (always his) sermon. Singing Psalms and Canticles doesn’t happen either.
Some churches just never quote Mary’s song in its entirety at any point during advent nor take its message seriously at any point in their ministry and I am saddened that one of the greatest prayers of justice we have available thru the mother of Jesus is just ignored like that.
@FatherTim
Online church led me to a Monday night spiritual conversations group and a Tuesday night Bible study, both of which have literally kept me alive this year. No exaggeration.

@RevDaniel
The Eucharist is not a re-enactment of the Last Supper or a funeral for a dead Jesus. The celebrant places the bread and wine on the altar “as a memorial before YHWH.” The bread and wine are there for the same reason the manna was in the Ark.
The Ark was placed in the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle. It was seen as “God’s footstool.” God was described as being “enthroned above the cherubim” which were on the lid of the Ark.
You know what’s funny (not)? People getting high-fived On Here for talking about how Jesus loved the outcast when those same people have treated me like utter garbage and made it clear that I am NOT welcome. Hypocrisy is so enjoyable, isn’t it?
Similarly, Jesus, in instituting the Sacrament of Holy Communion, doesn’t say, “Do this to remember me.” He says, literally, “Do this as my memorial.” The bread and the wine are NOT there for us to think about Jesus’ death and get sad.
Hello Twitterverse. I got asked out on a date and I said yes. This has never happened to me, ever. I will be taking questions at this time, reserving the right to answer or ignore them as I see fit.
If you pray, pray for L. She got home from hospital last night, pulled her g-tube out this evening, and they are on the way back to the hospital they just left last night! (90 minute drive.) Pray there is not a super long ER wait, and pray for her bc the ER is a major stressor.
Thanks to everyone who participated tonight in Bible Study at
@StJohnsDixie
. Thanks to
@RevDaniel
for inviting me to lead it & to preach this coming Sunday. And thanks to everyone for not telling me I sound just like Foghorn Leghorn (even if you may have been thinking it)!

False comparison. Pride Flag is about inclusion. Posting the Decalogue is about exclusion. The 1st table of the Law is about worship: who is to be worshiped, how that deity is to be worshiped, and the day of worship. That excludes students who worship a different god or no god.
I don’t get to preach very often, but when I do I realise how much I miss it. Just not every Sunday: did that for about 10 years. I don’t know how you all do it. Grateful tonight for
@StJohnsDixie
and
@RevDaniel
for this opportunity.
The ex called me today bc L was behaving terribly. Once we talked L down together we were able to talk and even have a laugh together. It’s good to be able to do that again.
Music director of the church L and I have been attending sent me a lovely note thanking me for sharing my “gorgeous voice” by singing in the choir Xmas Eve. That made me feel good, esp after a confidence-shattering incident this past summer.
Took L to the Greek Festival tonight at Holy Trinity/Holy Cross. Gyros, Greek salads, spanikopita, tyropita, loukoumades, Greek coffee. Went into the church proper, which is beautiful. Went outside to watch children do some traditional Greek dances. A good evening.
L had a Special Olympics competition today. She told me she got 2 ribbons but didn’t show them to me. I just found them. She got 1st in one event and 2nd in another! She wouldn’t tell me something like that bc it doesn’t matter to her: all that matters to her is that she had fun.
Hi, new followers and old followers who are reading this for the first time! My name is John Allen Bankson. Yes, “John Allen” is my first name: I’m a Presbyterian minister, musician (pianist, struggling/aspiring organist, conductor), and Doctor Who enthusiast. Come on in!
@NBCNews
Let's not forget that this is the woman who also said that Jesus was white and Santa Claus is white. Jesus was a Palestinian Jew and St. Nicholas was from Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). Both non-white.
So grateful for
@StJohnsDixie
Tuesday night Bible Study. I learn so much each week. And the people are great. Sometimes, you might even get a fab recipe for strawberry-rhubarb trifle!
Those of you on Twitter who are praying people: I have a 2nd interview (via Zoom) in a little less than 3.5 hours. (3 pm eastern, 2 pm central) and am really feeling inadequate to the task.
While we’re on the subject, it might be a good time to mention that the 12 Days of Christmas BEGIN on Christmas Day. They are not the 12 days leading up to Christmas.
The erasure of the Black church tradition and Black Christians in the current public discourse around religion is *strong*. White Christians in the U.S. and their issues do not comprise the whole of Christianity. A 🧵...
