Between this and Astra and Bookforum... I keep thinking of the Public Works of Art Project, of how CUNY schools were founded during the Great Depression. There are different ways to respond to a financial downturn and not all of them lead to a smaller world.

Nadine confirmed today that she left Gaza last month. Tysm everyone who donated; we raised the equivalent of four PEN translation awards. This would've gotten her mom, dad, & brother out too, but since the Rafah crossing is now closed, they're stuck in a hell of Israel's making.
We would LOVE to get Nadine up to $23,000. Every dollar brings this young poet & her family closer to safety. It grieves & enrages me that they & so many others are in this position at all: everyone should be free to live, study, work, love, & grow in the place they call home.

In the translation anthology Violent Phenomena, Mona Kareem describes bridges as "inherently invasive"
The insistence on “building bridges” between cultures, in reference to an active ongoing genocide, is revolting. That bridge already exists and America is using it to funnel across weapons and soldiers to continue the mass murder/starvation of 2 million people. Burn the bridge!

Translation is highly skilled work. But also, for translators as for service workers! The line about a labor shortage is false across the US. What is true is ever-rising rents and now inflation, and the line everyone hits at some point where stagnant wages stop making sense.
"There is no shortage [of translators], but instead a disconnect between the value of this skilled work and the pay offered, leading to a perceived lack of qualified professionals available for these jobs and subpar subtitles in the world’s most popular titles in film and TV."
