Just truly disgusted at the behavior of my alma mater @Columbia , whose endowment *grew with 32%, i.e. 3 billion dollars*, in 2021, leaving an operating surplus of $150 million––even with this windfall, they're threatening to replace their grad student workers with scabs?

I've been renting my apartment for four years and have put a lot of love into it. It's home to me, my gf, and our dog, but because it's not rent-stabilized every year when lease renewal comes around we're scared we'll have to move. I support #GoodCause eviction legislation.

What is the point of a free speech organization like @PENamerica when it stays silent in the face of genocide? When it does worse than that, and platforms a booster of a military that commits massacres daily, and ejects protestors?

Strange that the literature of a language that rubs up against so many others should be as wary of translation as English is –– for Vulture, I wrote about credit where credit is due as a way to make the reading even more interesting:

It's unbearable how commonplace images like these have become. How you wouldn't necessarily know from just looking at the picture if the massacre unfolded today or three months ago. And how singular the horror is for every single person in every photo. Every world, ruined.

Nobody has pressured anyone to join the protest; taking a stand is part of writerly life. Framing a call to say no to genocide as mob violence (???) shows just how much PEN America's leadership has lost the plot.

This was truly so nice, and made me wish I lived closer to Delhi so I could join the book club! One member asked about the very last sentence: "And that's why we have to exert ourselves to the utmost." It's a sentence with some friction, one we puzzled over quite a bit. +

Translation is highly skilled work. But also, for translators as for service workers! The line about a labor shortage is false across the US. What is true is ever-rising rents and now inflation, and the line everyone hits at some point where stagnant wages stop making sense.

"There is no shortage [of translators], but instead a disconnect between the value of this skilled work and the pay offered, leading to a perceived lack of qualified professionals available for these jobs and subpar subtitles in the world’s most popular titles in film and TV."

PEN America's waffling on ceasefire, its reluctance to name the aggressor, its avoidance of the term "genocide" all stand in stark contrast to the responses of PEN International and multiple national PEN chapters.

This is a trend that devalues our work and creates even higher barriers for translators not historically represented in our field. Some of us are now forming a translators committee within the NWU ( @paythewriter ) to organize for better pay & working conditions – join us!

The non-action & the actions are a mockery of PEN's stated commitment to free speech. I'm a two-time member of one of its prize juries; like many others so affiliated I am disturbed and disappointed, and will keep my distance until PEN puts its money where its mouth is.

Every time I translate press quotes from Swedish I'm tempted to add intensifiers. Not sure US readers understand that "an enjoyable read" means that the critic found the book thoroughly, deeply, richly enjoyable... Give me those exclamation marks!

"PEN America claims to be above politics. The implication here is that calling a genocide a genocide is the only political act, while avoiding the dreaded g-word exists in a vague, neutral zone where self-proclaimed free speech purists can ignore the murder +

An important corrective to some of the bad faith op-eds we’ve been seeing of late: @djolder on PEN America, the weaponization of a word, and why “genocide is the single most important and urgent threat to free speech on this planet.” @lithub

protest Israel's systematic destruction of Palestinian cultural and educational institutions and archives; and so on, and so on. PEN International has called for a ceasefire. Why does PEN America stay silent? What's the point of an NGO if not to be independent from gvt policy?
