My thesis is now availabe to read online! It's about the role of the earliest forms of the child care and protection system - mission, Native and church schools, industrial schools, legislation, &c - in settler colonial capitalism in Aotearoa.
'How the sweet potato got from the Americas to Polynesia is a bit of a mystery' no it's fucking not Pacific peoples are the best seafaring navigators in world history. Shut up. Indigenous peoples had societies that interacted with each other without European interference.
We don't need another Police helicopter to stop kids stealing shit, we need liveable incomes for their families, decent housing, equitable schooling, a non-retribution and punishment based justice system, community programs, and interesting and fun stuff for them to do for free.
@benshapiro
@amscraig
Amber, just so you know Ben Shapiro is a right-wing agitator, who has been pointed to as a radicaliser for ethno-nationalists who have carried out mass killings other places, and is generally an awful person!
I hope every rich bastard, every farmer, every board member of an energy or mining company that lobbied against actually taking climate change in NZ seriously this year chokes on this air 😊
Because this is doing numbers let me be really clear: this is a crisis caused by capitalism, and capitalism will NEVER solve this. The drive for profit will always be more important than people or the environment. This is the decade we need to bury this shit system for good.
It is actually normal to have your kids at a protest. Look at the history of Māori organising on this whenua. What's not normal is to put them in potentially violent situations and use them as a shield from or fucked up bargaining chip with Police.
Palestine 🇵🇸 is now recognised by 146 countries around the world.
Those countries stand with the oppressed.
Biden, Starmer, Scholz, Trudeau stand with Netanyahu. They stand with the oppressor.
Recognise Palestine 🇵🇸 today.
Free Palestine 🇵🇸 today.
Every Pākehā person putting a Black Lives Matter sticker on their profile and talking about this better show up fighting to end police violence against Māori and Pacific people here too.
Groceries are so freaking expensive right now - I mean an obvious $30-$40ish/wk increase for us since the end of last year. We're lucky in that we have buffer room in our budget now I'm back at work. Lots and lots of people won't have that. What are you meant to do - starve?
On this Waitangi Day, remember that 67% of kids and young people in state care are Māori. More than half our prison population are Māori (this is much higher for women). Māori are killing themselves at around 1.7x the rate of the overall population.
Too bad - its not about beliefs. Māori did not cede sovereignty. This has been found by the Waitangi Tribunal several times over, and what Māori have been saying for nearly 200 years.
If your idea of peace in Palestine looks like Palestinians living in a concentration camp forever and the continuance of a brutal apartheid settler regime then you don't give a shit about peace.
Nazis can openly encourage thousands of people to execute MPs and they can just go on about their lives. Māori mana motuhake organisers and kaitiaki, left wing organisers and environmental activists get raided, harassed, imprisoned, followed by private investigators.
The richest two men in Aotearoa increased their wealth by $1.1 billion in the 2017-2018 year while the wealth of the poorest half of the country went down by $1.3 billion. How's that trickle down working for ya?
This is disgusting.
A person on $150k a year can afford a 20% pay cut. A person on $40k a year obviously can't. This is not comparable, and it shouldn't be legal. No one should be receiving less than a living wage, especially not now.
Māori fought for years to ensure recognition of whakapapa would be a guiding principle of OT, and for years - generations - to create alternative iwi and hāpori Māori pathways for tamariki Māori who enter care.
This is devastating and needs to be fought with all the kaha we have
@sapatannes
@chainchompist
Bisexual women are also victims of homophobia. People aren't going to stop to check if she's lesbian or bi before gay bashing her. This ain't that hard.
Just need to do a brag about how amazing of a mum and partner
@cannibality
is. She's taking such good care of both me and baby while I recover and we try to get bubba FAT and STRONG. I love her so much and am so incredibly proud of how beautiful a parent she is 😻
Kinda cringe seeing so many Pākehā on the tl absolutely lapping up the Stuff apology. I am begging you to chill and not take large media outlets at their word. Signed, a Māori xoxo.
The Police use force nearly eight times more against Māori than against Pākehā. Māori are around twelve times more likely to have a dog set on them by the cops.
@nzpolice
have a whakapapa that can be traced back to the colonial forces here to violently subdue Māori.
Efeso Collins death is a huge loss, he was a great advocate for both communities dear to him and for all people who are subjected to the sharpest edge of capitalisms miseries. Nui te aroha to his whānau and loved ones.
Its outrageous that house prices have gone up 20% over 12 months, and that landlords are renting out shipping containers and sheds for $400 a week, and that our supposedly 'transformational' government continues to do nothing about it. How long can people keep swallowing this?
people tryna roast my ugly curtains like this house isn't rented from a millionaire landlord who won't even fix a busted sink, fix broken light fixtures, fix the dodgy wiring, let alone put money into making it look nice lmaoooo
This isn't really about sport tho, it's about making trans peoples lives unbearable, to force trans people out of public life, a door opener to pave the way for every hateful regressive anti-trans policy they can think of.
There should be no barriers that discourage and prevent Rainbow people, including trans, non-binary and intersex from participating and competing in sports. Sport is as much about wellbeing and community connection as it is competition.
Police lied. It was always going to be like this:
'Armed police were used 339x for bail checks, 224x for basic enquiries, 223x for suspicious activity and 43x for burglar alarms... on 1406 occasions, armed police were used for turnovers - code for a simple traffic stop.'
To all the people calling for general armament of the NZ Police after the death of an officer today - what would this officer being armed have changed? Unless you think cops should automatically approach every situation with pistol cocked, this officer still would have been shot
I am absolutely dreading the fight ahead to keep basic and deeply necessary public structures and services (Ministry of Pacific Peoples, Te Aka Whai Ora, any influence at all Te Tiriti o Waitangi has in our lesgislation and public policy).
But I will fight and we will fight.
'Working class people like cars and basketball and if you like going to a coffee shop or eating vegan food you're a class traitor' is so incredibly anti-materialist and just an inexplicably bizarre line to take. Working class isn't an identity or past-time, it's a class position.
Any LGBT+ person that supports this kind of thing now is 100% not to be trusted and should be ashamed. There are no excuses left for supporting this any more.
Interesting that so many organisations figured out how their workers could work from home when we were in Levels 3 and 4, and now we have over 10k cases daily we're expected to come to work and unduly risk our own, our families, our communities safety.
'Red' is fucking nothing. Seriously. We are watching Australia collapse in real time, when two months ago they were in very low case numbers. Utterly fucked.
They're actually incredibly competent at what they're trying to do, which is destroying our public services to make way for privatisation, further entrenching inequality, and removing protections for the environment and working class people in favour of profit.
Is Reti the most incompetent health minister NZ has ever had?
I guess he forms a perfect book end on the shelf with Willis at the other end representing the most incompetent finance minister supporting a row of utterly incompetent titles that make up an utterly incompetent govt.
Anyone who calls Pasifika people 'leeches' on New Zealand is definitely astoundingly racist, but is also just completely ignorant about imperialism, capitalism, and the history of Aotearoa.
Hobsons Pledge white supremacist propaganda on the front page of our most widely read national newspaper.
While they don't have a huge amount of organic support, they have heaps of money and mates in high places. Unsurprisingly its landlords and capitalists all the way down.
My dad Jimmy Cox of Kawerau, thirty years steam plant worker at Tasman, certified naughty fulla and tinkerer, hoarder and beloved old boy passed away last Sunday and the funeral is tomorrow. We'll miss him very much.
Some Pākehā people get so fuckin mad when Māori exercise any amount of rangatiratanga over their rohe even during a health crisis. Oh, you can't walk on this small bit of beach? you can't take a shortcut through marae grounds to get to a park? Suck it up mate its a pandemic.
Got six heavy duty paper towels worth of water off the inside of the windows in baby's room 🙃 and a bunch of mold that had grown up behind the curtain. Fuck I hate NZ housing standards.
Massive corporations like Air NZ are NOT doing people with disabilities a favour by hiring them for $2.30/hr. They're exploiting them. Workers don't need owners, owners need workers. People are people, everyone deserves a living wage.
Māori had a death rate of 42 per 1,000 people during the 1918 flu epidemic, one of the highest in the world. The total New Zealand death rate was just under 8 per 1,000.
Pākehā who are mad at Māori for taking steps to protect their hapū and rohe during this crisis can piss off.
local māori have blocked off a stretch of road passing by the marae at waitangi so that only residents can go into their block of houses during covid and the community page is filled with pākehā complaining about not being able to... walk along the beach
Its very funny that Our Flag Means Death is SO popular overseas but literally everyone I have seen talking about it from Aotearoa has been like 'ugh... Rhys Darby.......' in the first instance
Everything this coalition govt has proposed is just unreservedly racist, bigoted, hateful trash. We read this at work (where we work with vulnerable Māori ppl) and yelled and howled and talked about how we can fight this.
We will organise, we will protest, we will fight back.
The agreed policies relating to Māori and the treaty:
- Remove co-governance from the delivery of public services
- Introduce a Treaty Principles Bill based on existing ACT policy
- Disestablish the Māori Health Authority
- Restore the right to local referendum on Māori wards
NZ Firsts incredibly transphobic members bill is probably doomed to fail at first reading, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't all be very loudly condemning and challenging it. We (speaking to cis ppl) can't let this kind of gross transphobic rhetoric go unchallenged anywhere

a 15 month old Samoan boy is refused a measles vaccine here in New Zealand because he didn’t have a NZ passport. He has returned to Samoa today unvaccinated amid the measles epidemic which has so far claimed 55 lives.

Big thanks to my ace supervisors

Its sinking in that our kid is bilingual. She's starting to be able to hold a conversation in te reo Māori and English, like telling us a bit about her day or what will happen later, what she wants to do or see.
Funding to 190!!! family and youth support services cut completely.
A further 142 have had funding reduced.
North Shore Womens Refuge has already said losing the OT contract, which was 30% of its funding, will force it to close next year.
This is absolutely horrific.
NZ is a juniour imperialist illegitimate settler-colonial power. huge inequality. one of the most unequal education systems among wealthier countries. 1/3 of our polynesian kids in poverty. indigenous peoples 15% of population but 50% of prison pop., 70% of youth prison pop.
The US is gone, i don't want China as my overlord... If we were forced to choose one country to put in charge of the world, under its current government, or even just to replace the US as hegemon, who would that be? I'm thinking possibly New Zealand?
Our group of 6 millennials trying to buy a house together got the L from the banks. On the other hand someone bought a horribly damp and moldy house we looked at and is starting to try and rent it out immediately with no changes. Just in case you were wondering about NZ housing.
Why the hell is
@1NewsNZ
literally showing and reading the horrible words bigoted transphobes have used against Laurel Hubbard on the 6 o clock news... Do not do this.
Most employers - and recruiters - don't even bother sending an e-mail letting people know they will not be hired. Even after an interview. Sometimes even after a trial.
But the workers? Bow and scrape to you owner-lords, PEASANTS.
Hey, I wrote something! … I’ve been hiring people for 10 years, and I still swear by a simple rule: If someone doesn’t send a thank you email, don’t hire them.
There are lots of worthy fundraisers out there, but disasters (man made and ecological both) don't effect people equally. Indigenous people, poor people, victims of imperialism are hit hardest. Donate to Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities
Blood on the hands of every NZ politician that has not demanded a ceasefire and the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador, of every NZ media outlet that has towed the ideological line of Israels genocide of Palestine
We need to do more to demand an immediate end to this devastation
I am sorry to those innocent men, women and children in Jabalia Refugee Camp that the world could not protect you.
This blatant disregard for human life must be condemned unequivocally.
Do not let any more children die. We need an immediate ceasefire, nothing less.
#Jabalia
Contractor comes to install heater. Isn't wearing a mask and walks right in. Seems annoyed when I ask and takes a few seconds to look around the house before leaving to go get it. Bro. Its fucking year 3 of the pandemic. There's the biggest outbreak in the country RIGHT NOW.
If you hate trans people, if you want to remove their ability to live safe, happy, normal lives - you're not a materialist, you're not a feminist, you're not a socialist, you're not a good person 'speaking truth to power', and you're sure as hell not my comrade.
This is amazing. Māori communities are doing it. Why the Crown needs to back up and let hapū and communities do it while they provide the pūtea (which is the tiniest tip of the reparations iceberg) 👏👏👏
I'm the first person in my whānau to go to university, and I had serious doubts I would be smart enough to get through a degree. Now I'm actually doing pretty well.. I would never have gone if I didn't see other Māori women out there nailing it, because it was never a real option
Don't know how University's expect to survive if they keep casualising all their academic staff. Who is going to do the work if you don't give anyone a stable job? Who is going to do a PhD and consider research or teaching tertiary a career if you don't hire anyone full time? 🤡
Most people are not trying to get rich. They are trying to live decent lives, support their families, and have some sense of satisfaction. This is really illustrative of Luxons worldview and the people he surrounds himself with.
Btw, 99% of people don't get rich in a job either
This is an absolutely shameful statement and position from the NZ Govt.
No condemnation for genocide and supporting the bombing of a poor country who is attempting to intervene in said genocide.
We must hold this Govt to account for this.
"Today’s strikes support international security and trade ... Supply chain disruptions mean higher costs for NZ consumers & delays getting goods to and from markets in Europe, the Middle East & North Africa."

Kids being fed lunch (and breakfast imo) at school is an absolute no-brainer. It needs to happen at every school, not just low decile. We shouldn't be means testing for this.
The high school in Kawerau now has a program to support kids into joining the Police as well as the Army. For fucks sake. Why don't we spend the money on supporting young people in small, poor towns into doing things like teaching, social work, medicine, nursing?
Every New Zealander who is freaking out about how wrong and misrepresentative this is of our lives: remember this feeling when you read about a country that America calls an enemy.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has imposed a lockdown unlike anything in the U.S.
As of Friday, the nation of 4.8 million people had 1,456 confirmed cases and only 17 deaths
