BEST OF TURKISH MUSIC 2023 🧵
The year is nearly over. The music magazines mags gave their top picks, Spotify got unwrapped, & now it's time for our 5th annual (!) list of songs from Turkey.
Here are my mini-reviews & a playlist of my 50 favorite songs + a few extra for luck.

BEST OF TURKISH MUSIC 2022🧵
The year is nearly over. The music mags gave their top picks, Spotify got unwrapped, and now it's time for our semi-traditional list. It's been 4 years! 2019, 2020, 2021, & now 2022.
Here are my mini-reviews + a playlist of my 50 favorite songs.
This really is one of the greatest moments in the history of the Turkish internet.
Kanye West wondering why all the first comments on his Instagram posts about his divorce are long debates written in "this language"
Ezhel keeps it legit in his award speech by speaking out boldly against censorship in the arts, acknowledging his collaborators, and honoring his roots in the Turkish rap underground

What’s it like to get stoned under Turkey's state of emergency? Meet Ezhel, the Turkish rapper just arrested for "promoting drug use" among the youth. But pot isn't the only reason the gov threatens him w/ 5 years in prison. Who is

As I finish up my Anadolu Rock book this summer, I've been planning on launching a podcast. Is there any interest in an English-language podcast on the birth of "Turkish psychedelic rock" and its relationship to the protest movements of Turkey & the world's 1960s-1970s? 🎤🎸🎧
Today is an exciting today for me because I'm starting a postdoc research grant with the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) supported by the NEH. I'll be doing research for my book “Rockers and Radicals in Anatolia: Turkish Psychedelic Music and the Global 1960s.”
Bu Fıstık İsmet’i aklama çabası nedir? Son 4 bölüm ona çok fazla odaklanıyor. Dizinin en saçma ve gereksiz karakteri. “Kadınlara şiddet uyguluyorum ama look at me I’m a sad boy 🥃🚬😢 Seni üzerim kızım ama seyirci bana acısın.”

It also leaves Beyoğlu's true owners—Greeks, Jews, Armenians, & the LGBT people who have long sheltered there—out of the conversation

So everyone is rightly discussing megastar Tarkan's grand return.
According to some Geççek is an anthem of the opposition. According to others, it's not political enough.
But what if we analyze the song/video on its own merits? 🧵

Crossed over to Kadıköy today. Cute, clean, hip. Ate a bagel, could have been in Brooklyn. On the way back home, stopped in Beyoğlu for a beer. Gritty, gorgeous, dodgy. Home. Beyoğlu's been hit but it's not down. It's been gentrified/commercialized in the worst way, but lives 🖤

Amsterdam-based, Turkish psychedelic revivalist band Altın Gün has been nominated for a Grammy! In the past, Kardeş Türküler and Arto Tunçboyacıyan, and jazz pianist Kerem Görsev have been nominees. This is (I believe) the first Turkish-language rock band on the list.

Turkey’s first all-woman “orchestra” (rock band, really) here covering “Riders on the Storm” by The Doors on state TV in the ‘70s. The clip also includes the members looking back on the period from today. Some of these old TRT programs are simply müthiş...Window onto a lost world
I've only been back in Turkey a month this time, so while speaking Turkish I still find myself sometimes unconsciously saying "like" as a pause between words. Yet I know that in another month, I'll be speaking in English & again be dropping in "hani" or "efendime söyleyeyim" or..

For those upset, I mean "true owners" quite literally. As everyone knows, Pera was built/populated mainly by Levantines & non-Muslims. It's demography changed when Rums, Armenians, Jews were forcibly expropriated through pogroms (1955), legal discrimination (1964), pop. exchange.
