From PhD student @mugeuguz on the Zoom MENA group I run. Doing a PhD is tough. Then add doing it abroad. With disaster, repression, and chaos in your home and host countries. I’m in awe of Müge and others who show up, share, support others, and write. Interested? Message me
I have been studying/working abroad for almost four years now, I often feel a disconnect when something terrible happens in places I love or to people I care about. Life around me just goes on as if nothing happened, while I’m carrying the weight of it all. (1/3)

@NotLipset Excellent piece. Just after it came out, I published an article with @haarunercan on how regimes take society's repression tolerance into consideration. We show how this shapes cost calculations in repressing ethnic minority vs majority opposition actors.

@ahsanib @CornellPress May congratulations on the contract Ahsan, this sounds fascinating. I wish more scholars would engage with the role that education systems/materials play in myth-making and nation-building. Looking forward to reading and citing your book

Excellent news, I look forward to reading this. Congrats @noorghazalaswad!
Time to share some news that has been under wraps for a while now! 📣🚨📚 I am thrilled to announce the upcoming publication of my book, “Searching for Solidarity: The Revolutionary Dreams and Affective Hopes of Radical Social Movements” with Ohio State University Press, set to release in Fall 2025. The book provides an intellectual and emotional roadmap for how to cultivate solidarity in ways that honor radical social movements worldwide, from Syria, to Palestine, to Standing Rock to Hong Kong, and beyond. Each word is inspired by the sacrifices, testimonies, and unwavering courage of revolutionaries whose struggles fill its pages. Stay tuned for the stunning cover reveal!💚

I agree a threshold has been crossed re: steps the AKP is willing to take against the CHP. @haarunercan and I explain how the pre-May 2023 cost of repression calculus meant that of 150 mayors removed, only 1 was CHP. Conditions, and targets, have changed.
İktidarın İmamoğlu konusunda kritik eşiği geçtiğini ve onu soruşturmalara boğarak uygun zamanda görevden alacağını düşünüyorum. Gözünü karartmış iktidar karşısında artık bütüncül bir oyun planına ihtiyaç var: 1) imamoğlu ve yavas'ın dahil olduğu bir siyasi formül bulunmalı, 2) erken seçim kampanyası artık başlamalı, 3) gerekirse İmamoglu belediyeyi bırakıp CHP genel başkanlığına yönelmeli.

Highly recommend this study of colonial redistribution of power from @msaleh1982 and @as_hartnett. In a previous iteration, it won @APSAMENA Honorable Mention for best paper. The meticulous use of data also makes it a great piece for a methods course.
My paper with Allison Hartnett (@as_hartnett) on colonial redistribution of political power among precolonial domestic elites is finally out at @apsrjournal

Indeed. The AKP's strategy couldn't be more transparent: 1. Divide the opposition (again) 2. (Temporarily) rally as much Kurdish support as possible 3. Jail, vilify, and intimidate non-Kurdish opp 4. Hope this is enough for constitutional change to keep Erdoğan & Co. in power
Turkish government might release PKK's imprisoned leader Ocalan but seems like it will jail everyone else. Crackdown on dissent against government is widening. 🚩The main opposition CHP's youth branch head was detained for a social media post about the Istanbul prosecutor, 🚩The leader of the far right opposition Victory Party, Umit Ozdag, was arrested on charges of inciting violence and hatred through a series of anti-refugee posts on social media, 🚩Two CHP Istanbul district mayors have been arrested - one for alleged terrorism ties and another for alleged tender rigging - while another from an eastern province was ousted 🚩Six elected mayors from the pro-Kurdish DEM Party were also ousted for alleged terrorism ties 🚩Today, Ayse Barim, founder of a management agency representing Turkish celebrities, has been taken into custody over charges of "attempting to overthrow the Turkish government"
