I had to watch the video to be sure he really said nobody knew Lincoln was a Republican - or had forgotten - until he pointed it out. Yep, he said it. Paging @sarahcpr.

There's a lot to love about this quick video, which shows Tim Walz as a regular guy. But I think my favorite part is when his daughter says she's a vegetarian and he says they'll have turkey, she replies that turkey is meat and he says, "Not in Minnesota.".

I really didn’t want to spend my 60s worrying whether some spoiled idiot, his puppet master and his dumbass followers would end democracy.
I do truly believe we're gonna be okay in the long run, but that said, lately, every day has become a struggle to avoid the reminder that my entire 30s will have been spent on the absolute dumbest era in American politics, and all of it was entirely preventable.

Today, I was sitting in front of a cafe in downtown D.C., minding my own goddamn business, when three people who were clearly tourists of some sort walked up and gestured for me to take out my headphones. And I did and one of them said: "Can we pray for you?".

Ricky Schroder is in DC now awaiting the freedom convoy. Schroder streamed the Capitol Building and then declared:. “We want freedom. Free. Our bodies are our own. We own this. We get to decide what goes in and what goes out. Understood?”

Over the past seven years, I've lost the ability to figure out what's parody and what's reality, @cmclymer.
FL Governor Ron DeSantis shocked political observers this morning at a press conference where he announced a statewide ban on Pink Floyd, the English progressive rock group generally considered by popular music critics to be one of the most influential bands of all-time. (thread).

This, from @cmclymer, is moving and full of righteous anger.
The straight line distance between Washington, D.C. and Dover, Delaware is less than 85 miles. It takes a helicopter about 40-45 minutes to make the trip. I was 19 years-old, and it was my first time riding a helicopter. I barely remember any of it. I was distracted. (thread).

@RexChapman I attribute some of this to how inwardly-focused people are, Rex, but I also think we've done a really poor job of educating recent generations about what is, really, the recent past. (Not picking on teachers here; I think curriculum is changing, so much to teach, etc.).

I’ll add this: while I hope the attack on libraries motivates people, I had hoped that the attacks on trans people, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, POC, women, children, our democratic norms and the rule of law would have motivated people. The answer is to vote.
Someday, when we look back on all this, I believe we'll be able to pinpoint the moment they lost: when they came after our public libraries.

The federal commitment to hurricane readiness and recovery is very impressive. I'm glad Joe Biden's hand is on the wheel. @cmclymer has the facts.
Tonight, Hurricane Milton will slam into Florida's west coast in the Tampa Bay region. It's expected to be one of the strongest hurricanes to ever make landfall in the U.S., threatening many millions of lives. Here's what Pres. Biden is already doing to help prepare:. (thread).

There’s a lot of great writing by @cmclymer in this thread, but this @USATODAY piece after the “losers and suckers” debacle is straightforward and searing. Thank you to military members for your service.
In September, it was reported that Trump insulted American war dead, calling them "losers" and "suckers". I wrote for @USAToday about my experiences on a casket team at Dover. This is the most widely read piece I've written anywhere. I'm quite proud of it.

As someone whose first book was published when I was in my late 50s, I love this thread by @cmclymer about age and aging and ageism. We all know Charlotte is a hell of a writer, but this is on point for some of us.
In 1980, a psychiatric nurse at Chicago's Michael Reese Hospital (and mother of two) divorced her husband in the midst of a particularly troubled married life and decided to pursue her lifelong dream of an acting career. She was 40.
