I’m coming to the end of a chapter in Oxford and my last few days here. After a life on the educational conveyer belt, I am - for the first time ever - without a plan. It’s a bit scary, but for now, I’m enjoying seeing Oxford with nostalgia’s bittersweet rose-tinted spectacles.

Really excited to share a little bit of personal news: in October, I will be starting as a College Lecturer in Music at Magdalen College, Oxford! I'm so looking forward to working with fantastic colleagues and students, while finishing up the thesis!

I am so, so happy (and relieved!) to say that today I passed my DPhil viva! I am so grateful to many people. First, to my wonderful examiners Profs. Katharine Ellis and Sarah Hibberd, who were such rigorous and generous readers of my work. It was an honour and a privilege. 1/3

Bio update: I am truly chuffed to have been elected to a one-year Career Development Fellowship at Lincoln College, Oxford.
Looking forward to spending 2023 publishing from my DPhil and starting some exciting new research! Grateful, as ever, to all who’ve helped along the way ☺️

Yesterday, I moved back to Shropshire, marking the official end of my time at Lincoln College. It’s been a wonderful, productive year, and I’m very sad to be leaving this incredible academic community. Not yet sure what comes next, but looking to 2024 with a positive mindset 😊

3.5 years, 360 pages, and 95,000 words later, I finally handed in my PhD thesis! True to form, I immediately went to the pub.
I am so grateful to the many, many people who helped me get here. It's not always been plain sailing, but it's been an absolute blast. Freedom awaits!

I’m quite literally speechless: beyond devastated for my wonderful colleagues at Brookes Music department, who do such fantastic work both in academia and in the public sphere. Please keep your eyes peeled for updates, and give your support to the campaign against the cuts.
Today Oxford Brookes announced the closure of its Maths & Music departments, & that many colleagues in others are at risk of redundancies in a ridiculously short timeframe & insulting VS scheme: in English, History, Film, Anthropology, and more to come. All doing great research.

On this wet, drizzly January afternoon, I was officially sworn in as a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford. Quite surreal. This is going to be a fun year!
(Gown upgrade courtesy of a dear old family friend who passed away last year - I’m so glad to give it a new lease of life!)

The next few months are an odd “in-between” as I wait for the postdoc job market to decide whether I’ll still get to be an academic - more on that soon - but 2024 is quite possibly about to get real. I hope you’re along for the ride.

Eventually managed to get the portal to work, and I’m absolutely thrilled that my paper on Massenet’s 1897 opera “Sapho” has been accepted to this year’s AMS!
Sad not to be in Chicago, but excited to be able to present at AMS again. Can’t wait to see the programme!

Amazingly, it’s already been an entire year since I handed in my DPhil thesis.
If you’d told my burnt-out, post-submission self that a year later I’d be in the middle of a postdoc fellowship, I would’ve never believed you. But here I am, and on we go…!

I’ve had the utter joy of attending carol services (for once in the congregation and not in the choir!) at two different colleges this week, and my mood has been hugely lifted by the communal singing. Church music for this time of year is just beyond magnificent.
