It's finally more affordable! My book is out in paperback and with a 20% voucher. Thanks to

@ResearchHSS
Today Oxford Brookes announced the closure of its Maths & Music departments, & that many colleagues in others are at risk of redundancies in a ridiculously short timeframe & insulting VS scheme: in English, History, Film, Anthropology, and more to come. All doing great research.
This is so insulting. I'm 7 mo pregnant and STILL working overtime and weekends to do this job. Students have been fed this idea that lecturers aren't doing enough, when COVID meant we had to work twice as hard to adapt and provide blended learning, at the expense of research.
Today, at a meeting of the education select committee, a Conservative MP shamelessly accused higher education staff of not "pulling together” during the pandemic.
Here was
@DrJoGrady
’s response.

So I know everyone is concerned with something important today, but this happened and I just want to share my joy. Hope to tweet more meaningful summaries of the book soon, but just want to enjoy holding it for a bit in a pub before the world ends. Cheers!
The beast has been reluctantly released from the grip of my hand and confirmed as in production. It nearly got the best of me many times & I promised myself to never work this hard again. Hopefully the 12 years it took to come to life were worth it.

1/ The amount I’ve lost from wages this month from
#MAB
deductions is HIGHER than my nursery costs! For 3-4 days of marking, I lost £1400. This fight isn’t about money otherwise we would never have gone this far. As an academic couple we’re surviving thx to colleagues’ solidarity
In the midst of universal uncertainty and fear, the reality of my book cover provides some strange comfort. Glad to share it with everyone and I deeply thank my father Vincent Pal for providing the painting as well as

@CUP_Law
for the design. Getting very real!
More proofs! I’ve been working on a symposium for
@histmat
on new debates in

for 2 years. 7 scholars were commissioned to react to an article by Sam Knafo & Benno Teschke. They’ve delivered detailed & wide-ranging responses for issue 29.2
The book is nearly out! Here is the final cover and some snippets of the endorsements. Very grateful and humbled. Thanks to Benno Teschke, Hamish Scott, Heide Gerstenberger, and Jörg Ulbert.

deepest condolences to you and your families. I’m very sad to hear this. David was a great scholar but he also listened and was helpful to younger scholars and activists. I only met him once but will always remember it and thank him for his comments and support for many campaigns
Just found out our
@BrookesUCU
branch has agreed to donate £5000 to support colleagues in the 60 universities that ended their 8 day strike yesterday. Many of those losing pay are on very precarious contracts working many more hours than paid.

If you’re concerned with what’s happening at Brookes please follow the

'Jurisdictional Accumulation: an Early Modern History of Law, Empires and Capital' and me have said yes to a book contract with Cambridge University Press. Let the fun finally begin.
Feels good to finally work on proofs 2 years after writing the chapter - would write it differently probably today but stand by focus on methodology and pedagogy to further debates in HSIR, as well as defending internalism. Also, HS is astrophysics of IR!

The first review of the book. Delighted that my efforts are acknowledged by such an esteemed legal historian. Looking forward to responding on issues of method in Marxist legal history & to continue exploring empirically how to develop historical sociology of early modern empires

celebrating my anti-capitalism and reading David McNally’s recent Blood and Money, a brilliant take on the history of money and war. Just got to the juicy part (no pun intended!). To remind ourselves re school guidance news of how bloody and immoral capitalism is
1/ I also admit to naivety. I thought they’d be too scared of damaging students’ success and would weigh that against the small price of any peanut they could have offered, which considering situation, we would have accepted. Instead they’ve gone for symbolic victory at all costs
I don’t expect much from these people, but I did naively expect that much. Clearly part of the problem is that university managers are thoroughly insulated from the consequences of their own actions and have come to have union bashing identified as maybe their core job.
Excellent teach-in after the rally at Up in Arms with Stuart Whigham and Jill Millar speaking first on some current provocations - the links between protest and sport, and the ethics of striking

Last class tomorrow morning before my long maternity leave, so emotional. Teaching Rajagopal's 2003 'International Law and Social Movements: Challenges of Theorizing Resistance' with Linebaugh's 2010 'Enclosures from the Bottom Up' about Oxford - law, protests & capitalism, done!
Extremely sad about Neil’s death. So much from him still to learn and so much I wanted to ask him. Sending deepest condolences to Neil’s family. We’ve lost a great comrade and a first class historian. Will be posting more on his work in coming days
STRIKE! After working 4 weeks without a break & struggling through endless requests to do this job in ways I was never meant to do, it's about time we put pressure on the university system. Brookes can't strike but we'll support others as best we can! ?

How do we actually stop the
@UCU
Twitter feed? How many people are in charge of it? Who is responsible? As members what power do we have in collectively taken it down?
Last week I resigned my post at QMUL. Although the sector as a whole is becoming inhospitable & I loved my students & colleagues, QMUL managerial decisions made staying untenable. For me the last straw was the cruel, craven call by management for students to snitch on us.
The poster for

2020 London Conf is out! Big thank you to David Mabb. We obviously don't know what will happen in the Autumn and what we will be able to organise but we kept the tradition going and published our CFP: deadline 1 June for abstracts.
Voted to REJECT 4 fights 'offer' on pay, casualisation, workloads & gender pay gap (can even now remember all these w/o doublechecking). The sector is structurally in need of change, we've never been in a stronger position to do so, and I'm tired of striking every year
@ucu
I voted NO in

2/ the fight is about casualisation, decent conditions & ownership of production and labour conditions - ie about who gets to decide about the future of universities and about how we produce and share knowledge. Might be a losing battle too, but it’s worth fighting for.
'The book is to be welcomed as an able and convincing elaboration of the thesis [of jurisdictional accumulation]... Pal’s goal is just as much the exposition of method as it is the presentation of original research.'

Full solidarity to our colleagues from everyone in the branch! In context of broader austerity, students are a force because managers are forced to listens their customers
so most of my day has been spent responding to student emails saying they have Covid or are shielding because their housemate has Covid. What a national disaster. Shame on this government and on university managements.

Another extremely badly worded question which is too confusing. You’re asking us to strike for 2 days for no reason. More importantly, why is the negotiating team taking this pro-offer stance? Is there no more leverage in our favour? If so, why show your hand by backing the offer

Here is good ex why bringing students back to campus was wrong. Student just emails me she can’t attend class because for the 2d time this semester (it’s only week 3) she has to get tested because a friend is positive. She is gutted to miss class. WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS?
