Demonization of blood-bending is tied with the vilification of Hama. Her tragic backstory isn't allowed to be context for her current actions; we are supposed to read them as unjustified. There is no salvation for her in this show fixated with the idea of a 'perfect victim'

When they were enemies, they behaved like enemies; when they became friends they had a special bond :)

This is 80% of Katara's panels in those comics, btw. Mind you, she is the youngest waterbending Master,a teenage revolutionary with some of Avatar universe's best episodes 'centred' on her. There are Shonen heroines better treated than this, and that says something!

'North and South' comic focuses on Katara returning home. Here Katara could have easily been the central character.
But ultimately it becomes Avatar and co. saving the day,with Katara's cultural predicament resolved in the background. Again, a lack of independence and centrality
