so spent the evening in 2 drug consumption rooms in Copenhagen and trying to process what I have seen. I won't do this justice and probably have to reflect on it, but i met one of the most expert, practical managers in the DCR and I am in awe. His expertise was off the scale...so
It’s the last night of Taylor Swift concerts in Edinburgh tonight, and I will be sad when the Swiftie crowds have departed. They‘ve transformed a rainy, cold Edinburgh into a riot of colour, sparkles and joy.
#EdinburghTStheErasTour
I've said it before. If we are building extra prison places for 5, 10, 15 years into the future, it's accepting that we are going to fail the children sitting in our schools today. Prevention matters, we seem to ignore the evidence.
It isn't easy, certainly, but what else is there in the face of all the deaths in Scotland. It's not the single solution, of course not, but we should try to speak the uncomfortable truths among friends about what's happening to our fellow human beings who've no-one to help them.
We rarely thank the jurors who have to listen to some of the most horrific material that happens in a criminal case. They are integral to our justice system, but it is a mighty weight on anyone's shoulders.
I had a picture of Damilola Taylor behind me tonight when I was speaking. He was 10 years old when he died. I had a catch in my throat when his dad said it was his birthday today. No greater impetus should we need to prevent violence.
Hug your children.
Always feel a bit embarrassed about awards, I am very Scottish. I am truly honoured the
@rcpsglasgow
that they should choose me to receive the president's medal. We are on a journey to make Scotland the safest country, but we have much to do. Onwards.
I know many wonderful people in Scotland. In these turbulent times where media is rarely peppered with good news, I thought I would write about two great human beings. One stepping down, the other abt to launch the results of Independent care review
Peter said to me...'everyone in here has had a life of trauma, sexual abuse and neglect....the people who will use us in 15 years time are sitting in our schools.'
As an ex nurse and someone who has worked with so many people in addiction I admit I found it overwhelming tonight
The cost of imprisoning a woman for non violent offence and taking her child into care was 265,000 pounds.
I can't honestly think of any good outcomes from this approach.
@CrestAdvisory
@ThePromiseScot
For the change agents, the disruptors, the 'never give up' people, the frustrated and the slightly 'burnt out' people who want change to happen but encounter resistance yet keep going anyway...I wrote this for you.
an unintended consequence of the testing is that dealers are no longer cutting the drugs as much with other chemicals!
They also use vein scanning so people can find a vein easily...but also if injecting goes wrong, the staff provide antibiotics to stop infected injection sites
1/2 When I talk about justice, I often speak about big, complicated things and large numbers of people – it can be overwhelming. I see people taking a deep breath and I can almost hear them thinking that it seems too big to change.
There was a calm atmosphere there and people were known and welcomed. The staff were vigilant but only in relation to the health of people coming in. 4 rules only
1. Obey the staff - dignity
2. We will resuscitate you in case of overdose
3. No fighting
4. No weapons
For all the great teachers out there, who make a difference to children's lives, and recognise that some children overcome huge hurdles to even get to the school gate. You will be the face of change in Scotland.
Rules are agreed with those who use facility and the staff set a low threshold to enable those to use drugs safely. AND
@SimonCommScot
they will allow dogs in! I asked specifically.
They also will test the drugs there and then so people know what they are using...
Teachers.......I hear this all the time from the people I work with, they talk of a teacher who took an interest. Sometimes the things that matter can't be measured. Have a great day.
Saw a lad at a young offenders yesterday. Had wanted to die. Voice telling him nobody cared. Then he remembered a previous teacher. Said he’d never forget his kindness...You don’t always see the difference you make straight away but your actions leave an imprint.
Its quite a thing to see your modern apprentice from
@ComJusScot
@mcguigan_kim
and
@Prev_Justice
talking on stage in front of 1800 people and feeling so privileged to have witnessed their journey and impact. So much potential in those who have been otherised.

The amazing Peter who took me round said they have only refused 3 people in all the time he has been there. He said that all sides of the political divide had come around to the idea of DCR - it worked morally, medically and financially.
"People, even more than things, need to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; never throw anyone out." Audrey Hepburn.
Never heard this quote before - it's an old quote and probably doesn't chime with what we understand today about change, but I love it.
This stops people using hospitals later on with terrible wounds.
There is also access to treatment - medical, dental and chiropody at the DCR - this was essential they said..
injecting cocaine is common and some inject 30 times a day...thats a huge toll on your veins & system!
Their HIV cases have plummeted...who knew!
I asked about the small things that they had learned...
so people injecting cocaine often rake in bins for around 20 minutes after taking drugs - they had to make sure people could rake in medical waste..
Great to see third sector specifically covered by Benny Higgins, Chair of the economic recovery group. I have been so blown away by the flexibility and skill at both identifying and meeting the need of many of our citizens. We shouldn't expect them to deliver this on 1 yr funding
Done well, delivered compassionately and thoughtfully, it is a thing to behold. There was a church across the road from the DCR, in truth, the service that I saw tonight provided sanctuary and peace too.
This is why I love what I do. On a miserable, wet Saturday morning, over 120 volunteers who work as independent prison monitors give up their weekend to learn about trauma, leadership and transforming lives.

I have spoken about this work at length before and its impact on wellbeing. As we think about Scotland, and what we have discovered is important during this extraordinary time, wellbeing seems more important than ever.
Finland’s two-year test of universal basic income concluded that it doesn't seem to disincentivise working, and benefits recipients’ mental and financial wellbeing
I wrote a column after speaking at the Damilola Taylor Memorial last week - only 600 words but I hope I captured the essence of what I spoke about.
#prevention
H17 is the biggest DCR in the world, warm, clean with a mixture of both injecting and smoking rooms...yup smoking rooms. Individual cubicles where people smoke drugs - the air is cleaned 4 times a minute to protect the individual and the staff.
i have heard

@highlandcjp
about transforming a life by getting a job, a purpose, and being part of something. who knew that would work ! 😉
#smartjustice
It's just a thing that they do....they also are super sensitive to sound, chairs dragging over stone floors would set people off, and so linoleum and chairs with stoppers on the bottom reduce the noise and so flashpoints are removed.
Lockdown induced paranoia. I think it's a thing.
Inability to read non verbal communication on zoom calls, the lack of human contact and interaction, leads to second guessing and a sense of disconnectedness.
So on
#IWD2019
IWD my shout out is to all the women I know who are care experienced and using their formidable skills to change this country for the better. I salute you.
It took around 2 years for the DCR to really get to full operating capacity and be trusted by those who used it. It needs to be dispersed across a city and not centralised - of course. The DCR's are in areas that are gentrified, they do not hide them away...and why should they.
Not on twitter much recently - sometimes need to focus on being positive. However I've spoken to 100's of teachers in Scotland this week who are starting the year more determined than ever to support all our kids. Asset based + building resilience. Its been pretty awe inspiring.
Skyen, the smaller of the drug consumption rooms had facilities for injecting and smoking - it felt more intimate and manageable. The rooms are separate from each other. All the injecting materials and smoking equipment is provided. Its very clean and well managed.
so people throwing missiles at Police and causing disturbances in Glasgow whilst trying to protect a statue of Robert Peel who was the founding father of........hmm.
I'm on holiday this week. I'm switching off twitter.
people never really like to hear that good analysis is at the heart of every effective change. Gathering data, understanding what's happening, asking questions, using research by all the smart people I know, who have taken time to delve into the reasons for violence and offending
I am about to do a zoom presentation.
I have put on a pair of heels. I just cant do it in a pair of flip flops.
Although is it possible to put weight on around your feet?. Asking for a friend.
When change happens in Scotland- whether that's preventing young people getting involved in CJ system, reducing crime or other positive trends, we must guard against complacency. Its not fixed. Too many of our citizens outcomes are poor - we are nowhere near where we need to be.
I should have also said that the drug consumption room is open 23 hours a day - they close for an hour for a deep clean. It's there if you need it and when you need it. Driven by peoples needs and responded to by a pretty extraordinary group of people who manage the service.
I love this. We have been talking about inclusion for the over a decade now.... And the refrain is always 'one more kid you keep in school, is one less kid we' ll have in jail'.
Exclusion is a common background indicator for the men + women we support.
Listening to relational schools talk and how people learn. Sorry for rotten pic..research says can't learn if frightened, unhappy or don't feel you belong. Self evident I know, but sadly so many kids and adults who feel like this.
Every time I listen to
@HarryBurns16
I want to be better at what I do. He condenses the science, makes it clear and then tells you what to do about it. Evidence based social justice.
I just picked up an a phone message from
@JohnCarnochan
from yesterday. He said
"I'm sorry I missed your phone call, I was out in the garden playing"
Never too old....😂
Favourite quote from the brilliant Gabor Mate "this life is a lot more work than I anticipated. Because it takes a lot of work to wake up as a human being, and it’s a lot easier to stay asleep than to wake up.”
@murrayf00te
My husbands name is Murray Ross - he tidied up the garden yesterday - I am delighted the PM took time to recognise this achievement and that he is doing a great job in Scotland. It's the start of many tasks he has to do 😀
21st century Halloween.
Some young kids stole our internet bell from the gate (which was velcro'd on)...ran away with it and are still pressing it from across the street...and the bugger is still working.
I am with the most wonderful woman tomorrow...the wonderful Glasgow obstetrician Mary Hepburn, who supported pregnant women in addiction. Many women and children transformed through her care and drive. A legend.
Been off twitter for a few weeks to see if i can regain some equilibrium, take some holiday, climb hills and do some gallivanting - generally twitter is inconsistent with all of the above. Thoroughly recommend it!
As I go around Scotland I realise how many passionate, compassionate people there are. Trying to solve a myriad of problems...me included. The tie that binds us all, is inequality.
My quote of today from
@lokiscottishrap
speaking
@bbcscotland
about diversity, trauma and how our kids get the best out of school
"We talk about children being school ready, we need to start talking about our schools being family ready"
1/2 I've been doing a few interviews today abt the importance of prevention, the role of early years, our teachers, our parents, our police, our NHS and the list goes on. It won't make headlines..their contribution won't always be measured, but they matter hugely
Out with Street Lawyers in Copenhagen - who are a harm reduction based outreach legal aid service. started one of first mobile consumption vans in Copenhagen to reduce harm. They reach out to those furthest away from justice services and treat them as their most important client
"‘Trauma informed’ is a start (how we think); being trauma responsive is where we want to be (how we act). Our biggest challenge is to change culture and practice to make it live and be felt: action, not just words."

This is community.
This is connectedness.
This is compassion and empathy.
nearly 500 people come out to run to raise money for the Moira Fund - supporting families affected by murder.

I am at a loss after the conversation with
@KeeganSmith_Law
Its 2021, no-one should appear in custody court without an address - if we want problem solving justice and reduce offending and fewer victims, we need to solve the problems, not add to the complexity of sentencing .
@KeeganSmith_Law
We bring our whole self to work. It is often the discretionary efforts of teachers, lawyers, police officers, council workers and many others (you know who you are 😁) that make the critical difference. The standard we walk by is the standard we accept. Keep going Iain.
'The story of one life cannot be told separately from the other lives...all the lives that surround us are in us.'
@DrGaborMate
Families and those who surround us become part of our own story and we cannot ignore it.
#ACEStoAssets
Focusing on prevention of offending will have better outcomes for all of us. For those who are enslaved to drugs and alcohol and end up in crime, the path to change is harder than many of us realise. But great change is possible. It has to be.
#smarterjustice
Fascinating how focusing on reducing re-offending in Scotland is having a profound effect on the reconviction rate, which is at a 19-year low

I love this. Person centred and full of humanity. It's such a small thing but explaining to young people what is happening to them in understandable language is incredibly important. I've met so many who've no insight into decisions made about their life.
Prevention is always difficult – because something not happening is the measure of its success.
This often leads to people saying it wasn’t a problem in the first place, and complaining about measures put in place. That's the skill of public health, and its greatest challenge.
Impressive raising of domestic abuse in Manchester by
@NCDV_Official
, on almost every bus shelter..particularly apt during this lockdown period when there may be no escape.
Been off twitter for a month...its amazing how much online life takes up. Back on to talk about the 1800 people who have turned up to the

The
@TheCareReview
has landed in Scotland at such an important time. It is a demand for things to change. It gives us not only a compass point for the direction of travel, but also gives us the map of how to get there.
Thanks to the 1000's of midwives
@MidwivesRCM
who I spoke to on Friday who were so passionate about prevention of domestic abuse, supporting parents (dad's got huge mention), + change. Individually you were inspiring, together the 1000's in that hall felt like a force of nature.
We have the most wonderful trauma surgeons in the UK.
I hope that someone is also taking great care of our medical staff who are extraordinary when you need them most. I love the NHS.
Spent yesterday with
@hamiltonaccies
community work. I'm still trying to process how phenomenal they were. Recovery, hope, a hug and a place for people to be welcomed back to community. They don't shout about it.....but we should. I LOVED them.
‘No one loves me’
‘No-one is going to feed me’
The most unbearable details of the life and death of a 6 year old child, tortured and neglected.
We don’t want to read, but we must.
we need to take care of all our children. We should wrap around them to make sure that they have the care and support that they need, to change, grow and live.
For then all of us can be safe.
The burden that some children carry is more than a heavy schoolbag. The recent analysis conducted around children and young people referred to CAMHS is so incredibly sad, attempted suicide and suicidal ideation even in children under 12.
I had a phone call from someone who just heard about the potential changes to disclosure of convictions in Scotland, so delighted to be free of their past, they felt like walking to parliament to give some people a hug.
Really important piece here by
@karynmccluskey
. You come from very little. You don't have much. You tell your story and suddenly you are valued. But it's hard to redefine yourself later. You become trapped in your own drawing, permanently vulnerable.
Wrote a column about why an apology, sincerely meant is so important to those who spoke up about child sexual abuse at football and elsewhere. Never underestimate the courage and the pain involved in speaking the truth, and for those who keep speaking about it. I salute you.
A marvellous graph. Would it be great to show this level of change in some of our other intractable problems...although hopefully over a shorter time period😀
Scotland is changing. Prevention in policy and practice. Smart justice approaches are about reducing the numbers of victims and reinvesting money to support behaviour change.

This was for the families, all the families left behind. When the figures come out tomorrow, multiply it by 10, or 20 to get the impact on family members....thinking 'what if....' it's a tsunami of pain.
