the sooner journalism wakes up to the fact that having empathy and recognizing the humanity in people's stories is not bias or advocacy journalism, the better off the industry as a whole will be
Did any other immigrant kids grow up eating cut fruit that tasted slightly like onions because their parent used the same cutting board? I realize this is very niche but it cracks me up every single time
as a journalist part of my job is to pay attention to language. And it did not escape my notice that when Kamala Harris was talking about the destruction in Gaza, there was no mention of who or what was causing it
Journalism needs way more entry level positions that don’t require some magic combo of unpaid internships + short temp gigs + “hustling” to get your foot in the door
I think it’s also really easy in this industry to discount younger journalists for their lack of experience but I hope tonight really highlights just how mistaken that assumption is.
the student journalists at columbia and across the country should be so so proud of their work
actually getting choked up hearing these student journalists panic while covering these protests. Somehow remaining professional with god knows how little support
being a journalist is funny because you have two wolves in you - the one with insatiable curiosity that wishes it knew more and the other that wishes it knew nothing at all
I will never understand how so many journalism internships spend time and energy training the next generation of journos and then make it nearly impossible for them to transition to full time staff positions
questions as I wish I’d known to ask in job interviews as a baby journo
- how does your team handle editorial disagreements?
- how much creative flexibility and freedom do you offer your producers?
- is there a regular forum for feedback? do you welcome it from everyone?
me a journalist who stays up to date on the news but wasn’t old enough to pay attention in 2008 trying to understand the full implications of the banking collapses
Does anyone ever think about how many journalists of color are only able to enter the industry as interns or fellows and then denied permanent positions because they’ve only had internships? You can’t get permanent experience when people only give you non-permanent work.
if you're a journalist now, I'm curious! What was your major in college?
I studied political science but have to say that what I learned about a) the legacy of colonization and b) neoliberalism continues to shape the work I do today.
newsrooms when they hire journalists of color to better cover marginalized communities
vs
newsrooms when those same journalists do what they were hired for and point out bias in coverage decisions
one thing that I think about often is how many people become journalists to help highlight the voices of marginalized people, only to be forced into the kind of silence that maintains systems of oppression - all in the name of supposed neutrality
I’d be embarrassed about double texting if I wasn’t literally texting, emailing, calling, twitter DMing, pigeon sending, letter in a bottle propelling sources as a journalist
Every Friday, my dad fast-forwards to the end of the
@nprpolitics
podcast to hear my name in the credits before going back to listen to the whole episode 🥺🥺🥺
🚨 some wild personal news 🚨
This fall I’ll be living my dream as the intern for
@nprpolitics
! It feels so unreal to finally say it out loud and I’m so grateful to everyone who helped me get here. Catch me covering all things politics soon!
Every year for my birthday my dad writes me a letter! This year he decided to draw me one instead. So here’s a bit of my cartoon journey through the past 25 years 😭🥹❤️
sometimes celebrating your accomplishments means tracking down every person you know in DC, begging them to send you a print copy of a newspaper, buying a comically GIANT frame, and then harassing your architect dad into doing some arts and crafts 😗💖🖼️📰
very grateful 💓
I think the concept of bias in journalism is really interesting - especially because it usually focuses on an individual journalist's personally held beliefs rather than societal power structures that might have shaped our industry.
Today I learned radio producers used to cut tape with razor blades. I have absolutely no idea how that would work, especially if your editor wanted you to put something back in
one thing I wish more people knew about journalism is how much time and care goes into getting things right.
it's not unusual to spend 10 mins on the phone with an editor going back and forth on how one word changes the meaning of a sentence! and i kind of love that
if you're a journalist struggling right now (with the state of the industry, the darkness of the news, the moral and emotional burnout), I would love to know what gets you through and keeps you going.
soooo apparently my last romance feature had a full page spread in the
@washingtonpost
🤩🤩🤩
anyways I’m so proud of this reporting and hope you’ll give it a read! romance is for everybody 💖
Are you coming up on your second pandemic birthday? Do your plans include a homemade cake? A long walk? Or even a mildly awkward Zoom party? Let NPR's WATC know what you’re planning and how you’re feeling -- tweet me your responses!
🚨some professional news!🚨
Sunday was my last day
@NPR
. Next week, I start as an Associate Producer with
@hereandnow
! I’m so grateful to everything I learned and while I’ll miss the people (and the slack emojis)…I can’t wait to make radio with the wonderful folks
@WBUR
!
when you’re a journalist and you’ve spent hours tracking down contact information for a source and you finally send the email or text only for it to immediately….bounce back
just a reminder to newsrooms that the people of color on your team are not the only people responsible for finding diverse sources or generating inclusive story ideas 😗🫶💕
I’ve been
@NPR
for six whole months woohoo! And it’s been a delight every day getting to live my dream and make radio!!!
I was feeling a bit bummed that I’d never seen HQ in person, so my very talented dad drew me up a lil sketch of the building 🥺🥰
For all the stressed early career journalists out there (myself included): What were other people's paths to journalism and the position they hold now? I used to feel like I started too late to "make it" but the truth is there's really no one way to become a journalist
If you’re a journalist with some level of power within your organization and you’ve got the time/emotional energy to do it, PLEASE reach out or make yourself available to early career journalists of color during application season.
I hate to admit it but this job has taught me my parents really were right when they said its sometimes much better to hop on the phone and call someone than text/email
I’m not sure how we got here so fast but it’s my last day
@nprpolitics
! I’m so grateful for everything I learned and for the chance to cover a monumental election with reporters and editors I’ve admired for years.
Next up I’ll be heading to Weekend
@npratc
as a news assistant!
This is genuinely so sad for so many early career journalists I wouldn't be where I am without my time as an
@npr
intern.
That being said! There are many opportunities at member stations. Internships were cancelled the summer after I graduated and I still made it.
🚨 My goodness. Facing budget shortfalls,
@npr
just announced it will cancel the Summer 2023 internship program. This makes me truly sad. I may be wrong but I don't recall this happening in my nearly 30 years.
@NPRinterns
are part of NPR's lifeblood & a pipeline of great talent.
feeling real drained these days - as a journalist and a human. working in an industry that considers itself to be objective but doesn’t turn its lens towards internal biases is as frustrating as it is exhausting
as an audio producer, I know I should hate this but actually find it kind of delightful when someone's dog, lawnmower, or kid sounds off in the background of an interview. like yes! we are humans! this is what life sounds like!
When I was a little girl I fell in love with this Barbie decorated bedroom at Hobby Lobby and told my dad I had to have it.
He went to classes so he could learn to sew and made me a whole Barbie comforter bedspread with matching pillowcases.
Here it is like 15 years later ❤️
Be nice, and I cannot stress this enough, to your interns!! It's a chance to make a new buddy! And also they'll remember your kindness (or lack thereof) for a looooong time.
A week ago my dad broke his leg. The day after he came home the hospital called and told him he’d tested positive. I’m currently the only person caring for him and I’m terrified. If you have a spare prayer or kind thought to send our way this Christmas I would be so thankful.
it appears to me to be an attempt to thread the needle without losing support from key voters within the progressive wing of the party. But will it ring as sincere to those voters? I’m not so sure
I just think that it's interesting that journalism refuses to give producers credit for their work (with something as simple as a byline) when that's where most of the diversity in radio/podcasting is concentrated.
In my greater pursuit to pull back the curtain on public radio, today I’m doing an (unofficial) day in the life as a
@hereandnow
producer ✨
First up, our 8am editorial meeting where we discuss the day’s show and I get my assignment! 📝
Today I'm thinking about how much of journalism runs on connections and pitching yourself to people far more powerful than you and how difficult that is if you're a journalist of color who doubts their place in a newsroom (because it looks nothing like you)
the most fun part of being a journalist of color is the immense pressure from the industry to divorce yourself from your identity and cultural experience to be an "objective" reporter or producer
the bravery I’m seeing from these student journalists
@WKCRFM
as they bear witness and report is really reminding me of why I got into this profession in the first place
Applications for
@NPR
internships open tomorrow!! So many opportunities!! Please reach out with questions, cover letter read throughs, or just general feelings of panic!!
ps: I have it on good authority and zero bias that fall interns are the best
