Hello, friends. Reaching out with a request if you're able. Brian Jarboe- a dear friend from
@NPR
-recently had heart surgery that led to serious complications. We're trying to help Brian and his family move forward.
(Kindly re-Tweet, please!)
🚨 My goodness. Facing budget shortfalls,
@npr
just announced it will cancel the Summer 2023 internship program. This makes me truly sad. I may be wrong but I don't recall this happening in my nearly 30 years.
@NPRinterns
are part of NPR's lifeblood & a pipeline of great talent.
@NPR
has long provided tactical gear to our reporters: in war zones. We lost two staff members not long ago in Afghanistan, who were there in pursuit of the truth. Hard to believe that this sort of protective gear has to be issued to our reporters on American streets.
#nprlife
NPR is 50 years old today. Hard to imagine getting a vision off the ground and turning it into what
@NPR
has become. Grateful to the pioneers who made it happen, the talented colleagues & friends I've made in my 27 years here, and the listeners who make it all possible.
#nprlife
Thread: Amazing things happen. There's a Jewish tradition of not leaving the body of the deceased alone from the time of death to burial. There is great reverence for the body & soul. My sister
@healthnut64
was very concerned about Mom being alone after she died. Then I got this-
My mom died today. So loving & giving. Did everything for her family's benefit. If we were happy, she was happy. Miraculously survived brain aneurysm & gave us nearly 40 more years. Adored grandmother. We'll make Mima's matzoh ball soup, but it- and life- will never be the same.
Yesterday was a particularly unpleasant day at the treatment center. Today, someone in our group brought in three of her baby goats for a little animal therapy. This is Cream. And yes, it was love at first sight. ❤
Today begins the 3-day process of
@npr
layoffs: 10% of the staff. Such a very sad moment in the organization's proud history. I've been speaking with folks whose names you know well... and many whose names you don't. So much talent will be shown the door: A huge loss for America.
My dad died today. He was a sweet and kind and decent man. He always put the needs of others first. He battled health issues to stick around for his family and my mom, his love of 60 years. He adored his family and his family adored him. And for Dad, that was quite enough.
I know some of you are wondering what the heck was up
@NPRWeekend
today. It was a day unlike any I've experienced. Simple answer: multiple system failures, including audio routing and playback, scripts, email. Things started melting down in the 30 minutes leading up to the show.
Recently a very senior
@npr
manager made a snarky, triggering remark regarding my eating. Since then, I've been putting on weight. With that weight has come emotional and now physical pain. Hard to imagine the insensitivity of people to known psychological issues. I'm hurting.
Drove down K Street on the way to
@npr
at 3am. The illuminated flag sits atop a darkened White House. Behind, the Washington Monument glows in it's usual glory. Never thought I'd see the White House hiding in a shroud of darkness.

Good morning. Taking a few days off after today's
@NPRWeekend
. Should have done it a while ago. Been struggling. Grateful to NPR for helping to arrange the time. If you need help, ask. Reach out to others. It's very hard to do this on our own. Be well.
How could you not get up early for
@NPR
's
@MorningEdition
tomorrow? On the promo,
@NPRinskeep
says, "For about six years I've been asking Donald Trump for an interview. Today the former president took my call. We'll hear what he said- up to the moment that he hung up on me." 👂
I've got lots of thoughts on the many recent departures from NPR. LOTS. One of the primary ones is this: NPR has now lost FOUR hosts in the past year. Four out of eleven on the legacy shows. That would have been unthinkable in the past. Those jobs were held onto for dear life.
And this is what it comes down to. My sister & I got to spend 3 hours today with my mom, who is under hospice care. Outside, on a beautiful day, wearing masks and gloves. Not allowed to make physical contact. But just being able to hold her hand was something I'll never forget.
I just learned of the passing of longtime
@npr
audio engineer Renee Pringle. Renee joined NPR in 1979, when few women worked in the audio engineering field. She spent the next 42+ years serving our audience. Renee cared deeply about sound and was generous with her knowledge. 😔
"Eternally, Mel" That's how Dad signed every card to Mom over the course of their nearly sixty years together. That's a scan of his handwriting on the gravestone. Today, on Valentine's Day, Mom was laid to rest by Dad's side. So glad they're back together... Eternally. ❤❤
Just remembered this photo of Nina, Cokie, and Linda from September 1, 2017. I bumped into them in the newsroom, and couldn't pass up a photo of NPR's Founding Mothers (Susan Stamberg not pictured). A bit blurry, but you get the point...
If you read nothing else today, read this.
@NinaTotenberg
recounts nearly fifty years of friendship with RGB. You need this smile today. I think we all do.
It is a gloomy day at
@NPR
- and not just because it's rainy & gray in DC. Dozens of our colleagues around the country are leaving us today- most not by choice. 10% of the staff has been eliminated due to budget shortfalls. We proceed with sadness- and gratitude- for our friends.
We're so grateful that the love and care we gave Mom was continued, and that Paula Tucker was able to verify her care. Now we're ready to send Mom off, knowing that she's been well taken care of right up until the end. Thank you, Paula, for putting our minds at rest.
#nprlife
I'll be trying working from home this week. So I came in this morning to pick up one of our remote engineering kits, which coincided with Lulu's last day on
@NPRWeekend
. Here's to the five great years we were lucky enough to have her as host. 🥂
I don't drink. But at the end of our first feed of
@npratc
today, a thoughtful producer brought some powerful bourbon whiskey into the control room. The news from inside npr has been absolutely brutal this week. So, again... I don't drink. But today? Today is different.
#nprlife
We each got our first dose that day. The second dose is scheduled for Wednesday, February 24th. It's extremely unlikely that mom will still be with us by then, but we're already on the schedule to get our second dose that day. And that... is a mother's love. ❤️

Hopefully tolerable thread:
Well, the cat's out of the bag. After enjoying the past nearly 7 years as
@NPRWeekend
Technical Director, I'm going to be getting a long-needed change in my work schedule and shift my work hours to daytime. That means I'll get to sleep... at night!
And yes... work stuff can be stressful and all, but you do it for your family. After the rough morning at work, we got to celebrate our "baby" as he graduated high school.
@UofMaryland
, you're getting a good one!
#Terps
After 45 days in treatment, I'm heading home and moving on to the next phase- IOP (Intensive Outpatient Therapy). That should last another six weeks or so. Hopefully as part of an Exposure Experiment, I'll be trying to stop into the building at NPR. Big stuff. Fingers crossed. 😬
For those who are hurting: Just had my 1st ever session with a grief counselor. Never did anything after Dad died 2 years ago, as we were caring for mom. Now that she's gone, it's time to deal with what's weighing me down. One session in and I feel a bit lighter. You can, too.❤
Absolutely astonishing drone video shows the eruption of a volcano in Iceland which had been dormant for some six THOUSAND years until it was roused by recent earthquakes. Nature never ceases to amaze!

Just saying hi and thanks to all for your continued support. I've been working hard to climb out of this black hole... therapy, acupuncture, doctors and more. And today I trimmed my beard and shaved for the first time in more than two weeks. That's a glimmer of hope. ❤
3am at the Lincoln Memorial- my favorite monument of all. Nobody else there. Nobody. Imagine the feeling of having a national monument all to yourself. Chills? You bet.

I bought this shirt a few years ago, but never wore it. Pulled off the tag today and put it on. I think all of us
@npr
feel like our work is meaningful, especially now.

I wasn't allowed to see my mom today because my COVID test didn't come back in time. Because test results are delayed. Because so many people are being tested. Because so many people are dying. Because COVID is and never has been a hoax.
#WearADamnMask
I know the systems are still being worked on, but the best in the business will prevail. And I managed to get home, put on a suit, and get to graduation in time. Kudos to my many colleagues who rose above to stay afloat & to those who came in on their days off just to help out...
On this January 31, I'm happy to be the first in the Twitter-verse to wish
@LeilaFadel
the best of luck on this, her first day as co-host of
@NPR

@MorningEdition
. Leila &
@NPRinskeep
share hosting honors, & we have the honor of listening. Leila, you've earned this!! Kill it! 😊
Good morning,
@NPRWeekend
fans! Do me a favor if you would? Can you let me know how the show sounds to you today? Does it sound about the same as usual?
@nprscottsimon
is broadcasting from home today for the 1st time & I'd love a sense of the show's sound from your perspective.
One year ago today Alzheimer’s took my mom after a long, painful battle. Sally Rushfield was a sweet, loving caregiver who was happiest when those she loved felt loved. Always doing for others. What a kind heart. Everyone should be lucky enough to have a mom like her. ❤🌹
THREAD... My mom has always cared for others more than she has cared for herself. In the same way, I am my mother's son. I think in some weird way she has been hanging around long enough to take care of her two children one last time...
We spoke to reporters all over the US, plus Europe, Africa, India, the Middle East & more about the diverse topics your support of public radio allows NPR to tackle. People jumped right up to help. At several points, we had far more reporters calling in than we had phone lines...
NPR asked divisions to revisit discretionary spending & make cuts as needed. In my view, internship programs should not been seen as discretionary spending, but as a true investment in the future. Will NPR offer UNPAID internships for those who want (and can afford them)?
Leaving
@NPR
for the day, and wondering if this newsroom will ever be filled with people again. Every day since March has been like a Sunday around here. Quiet. Too quiet. Stay healthy, everyone!
#nprlife
Oops!...I Did It Again!! (Actually, it was no accident.) Another Exposure Experiment visit to
@npr
. Each time getting a little bit easier. Seeing friends helps.
@ayesharascoe
and the
@NPRWeekend
crew were welcoming as always. Less shaking + more smiles = PROGRESS! 🙂
Stumbled upon a moving tribute to the Uvalde victims this morning. Nineteen brightly colored student classroom chairs, flanked by two teacher chairs. Had to stand pretty far back to get them all in the photo, which emphasized the scope of the tragedy even more. 🖤
When I left for graduation (two hours later than planned), we had started to find our groove. Systems were all still down, but with bubble gum and scotch tape, America got a pretty decent show (I think so at least... I want able to listen to one word of content)...
Driving
@MorningEdition

The goal of an eating disorder clinic is NOT weight loss. It's eating normalization. That said, I've lost a couple of pounds this week, and today I put on pants with a button instead of sweats. And buttoned the button. Baby steps... Small victories. 😌
I drove to
@NPR
today. I'm here as I write. Went straight to the newsroom floor. Shaking, I curled up into a ball outside a studio door.
@nprscottsimon
saw me there. A couple of other friends found us. Hugs & conversation have eased me some. Enough for now. But a positive step.
While our IT and engineering teams scrambled to keep us on the air, the news team answered the call.
@scottdetrow
, who was filling in for Lulu, started doing impromptu interviews with reporters and correspondents all around the world, with editor
@dparvaz
literally at his side...
Went into
@NPR
today. A little shaky, sweaty, queasy. But I did it. Walked around a bit. Visited my manager. Didn't go to the places I love yet, like the studio area (too much today). It's a start.😧
Spent nearly an hour overall. Bumped into two dear friends on my way out.🍀
We've been lucky to have John Burnett filing sound-rich reporting at

Seriously thinking about leaving
@Spotify
after having spent some time watching and listening to
@joerogan
content that is truly offensive to me. I support his right to say what he wants, but I don't need to pay to support his bigotry. Anybody else pondering this?
It was from
@petpaula
, an
@NPR
fan & lovely person who just happens to follow me on Twitter. Paula serves as a Shomeret- someone who performs the mitzvah (good deed) of sitting with the deceased at the funeral home we selected for mom... She recognized Mom's name and let me know-
Mom arrived, and Paula sat with her & sang to her. And kept her company so Mom wouldn't be alone. Then Paula was listening to
@NPRWeekend
with
@nprscottsimon
on Saturday morning. She had no idea what was to come, but then she heard the lovely chat my sister and I had with Scott-
Keeping a photo of mom and dad close by as we continue to sit at mom's bedside. I don't know what really happens when we die, but I'd like to think that soon they'll be together again. They were married for just shy of 58 years.
We learned yesterday that 8 people at my mom's memory care, out of the "15 or 20" whose test results have come back, have tested positive for coronavirus. Results for the rest are pending. There are only about 60 total residents. Feeling helpless, moving towards hopeless.
Some personal news, as the kids say: It's been a helluva rough year, but things are taking a turn for the better. I'm so pleased to share that I'm heading back to my happy place soon- returning to the studio as Technical Director for
@npratc
! Excited to join the team!

Our interview concluded with Mom's favorite song- "Sunrise, Sunset" from "Fiddler on the Roof." While keeping Mom company, Paula sang the song to Mom. Then-
Got my second covid vaccine two weeks ago today. Vaccine now fully effective, per the CDC. Just walked into a grocery store for the first time since last March. It's like when Dorothy opens her eyes for the first time in Oz!! 👀😲
One of the great thrills us nerds- errrr- radio professionals have at
@npr
is doing an entire 2 hour show without making a mistake, known as a "Fix Free Show." They're rare. Today
@arishapiro
realized we blew it not 20 seconds into
@npratc
! "Get it over with," he said.🙄

I was driving Morning Edition in the 90s. Cokie Roberts had just had lines installed to do her 6AM live segment from home.
Mid-chat between Cokie and Bob, her dog Abner decided to jump in. Abner's big basset hound woof stole the show. Cokie was horrified. Great radio, though!
I applaud Lulu for picking the perfect Sunday to be off. I almost didn't work today- it was my son's high school graduation day. NPR had offered me the day off, but I decided I'd go in and do the show, then head off to graduation. Little did I know what was to come...
No trip to Israel would be complete without stopping to meet

Good morning. It's been a restless couple of days. Spent a couple of meaningful hours watching the sun rise over the Chesapeake Bay this morning. Thought you might enjoy this.
Today I climbed onto a train for the first time since a dear friend decided to take his life by standing in front of one. Hated every second of the ride, but I'd swear I heard Jack telling me that everything's ok. Everything's not ok, but we move on a day at a time.

Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh!!! I'm back in the building after nearly a month away! And my heart's not racing in the same way it was before. A LOT has changed. I want to tell you more, but for now just know that the future looks brighter. Fingers crossed!🤞
The day was not without a few unfortunate glitches, but to me, the goal is always to keep our meters moving, and we did that to a vast extent. New challenges popped up as the day progressed, and everyone rolled with them, because in the end, that's all you can do...
Today was terrible in almost all ways. But I'm glad that I made the choice to knowingly take the route with heavy traffic along Independence Avenue to experience the splendor of DC's cherry blossoms. 🌸
Good morning and MERRY CHRISTMAS from Washington, DC!! Can confirm a Santa sighting high above North Capitol Street!! 🎄🎅 Best wishes for a happy holiday to all who celebrate. 🤗

My 17 year old son just asked if this is one of those events that we'll all remember forever where we were when it happened. I think it absolutely is. Feels every bit as shocking and sickening as 9/11.
Well, today's the day. We're scheduled for our second COVID vaccine today at Mom's memory care facility. Mom is no longer here to get hers. We lost her twelve days ago. But I'm convinced this was her final act of protecting me and my sister. Thanks, Mom! ❤️
THREAD... My mom has always cared for others more than she has cared for herself. In the same way, I am my mother's son. I think in some weird way she has been hanging around long enough to take care of her two children one last time...
Just wanted to say thank you. The joy so many of you expressed from seeing our little baby goat visit uplifted all of us in treatment today. I'm glad we were able to give one another a smile. Much needed on our end. ❤🙂🐑

Spending time with my parents. Miss them terribly. Thinking of all of those today who are missing the special people in our lives who've left us. How I wish we could be together even just one more time. I know they'd feel the same. 💔
"I've got 1 year left to fight for my country," says this 59-year-old taxi driver. After years abroad, he crossed home into Ukraine today, heeding President

Signed in for my first NPR work shift since I began treatment in February. Working a few hours per day- from home- throughout the week, squeezed in around my IOP/ treatment schedule. Hoping to be able to return to working in person sometime soon. Hoping.
Slowly, we lost our computer capabilities. We had no ability to access the stories the show had been working on all week. Five minutes before the show, our producer said, "What do we do?" I said, "Start calling our reporters and get them to talk about what they're covering."
Passover begins Saturday night. It's our 1st without Mom; our 2nd since Dad passed. Mom made the most delectable matzoh ball soup. Here are her recipes if you'd like to try them yourself. The soup recipe is in mom's handwriting. Add a heavy dollop of love... She always did! ❤💔
I've known people who took their own lives, but not anybody I knew especially well or was particularly close with. That ended tonight. I'm numb. Crying. Angry. Feeling like I didn't do enough. Or I did too much. Or said the wrong thing. It's a different depth of sadness.
