0-1 into 6-1 on day 1. 0-1 into 4-1 on day 2. Almost 10 years since I played on a Sunday. Not a bad tournament to get lucky - just need to keep it up for a few more matches tomorrow. :)
I had a great weekend at MF Barcelona. Testing was a lot of fun. Special thanks go to
@EdgarMTG
and
@Huschenmtg
for the work on the temur rhino deck I played. And to
@lsv
for running the limited meeting. Happy to be back in the colder part of europe now though.
looks like the 'big announcement for magic' is that WotC will continue to print MtG cards like they did the past 27 years. I hope this rush of adrenaline won't cause any complications, I'm pretty old and all.
MI started with a goblin mirror loss against
@PrediMTG
. G1 and G2 were boring, G3 was great. his turn 4 muxus was close to perfect. but mine was even better, unfortunately after I killed his krenko, he found another and ... never enough blockers.
#MythicInvitational
And here's the
#MtGM21
preview card WotC provided. I think it's probably too expensive for standard (hi, mystical dispute). Pretty sweet card though, there will be some bad blowouts in limited. Might be cube-worthy too.
whelp, actually ran the tables and 9-0ed day 1 of the rivals gauntlet. Been a while since every little thing went my way, even when I messed up here and there. Feels good to be lucky, need a little more of that on sunday. :)
I'm not quite sure why there's a small alch set released. is alchemy supposed to have a monthly subscription fee of 100 usd or something like that? most of these being rare+ really irritates me.
I have to restart
@MTG_Arena
every ~2 hours atm as it just starts to go crazy on my CPU. at times it uses up 60-70% of my available CPU. wth are you guys doing there? this is a GUI for a card game?! that's insane.
I certainly had problems with WotC decisions in the past but now that the marketing department is running organized play, it's going downhill pretty fast. I'm giving the pro tour a few more years and then we'll be at twitch show-matches only with invites based on viewer numbers.
my main gripe with the coverage was the amount of games that ended in players haggling over who concedes after running out of time. increase round time (50 min just not enough) AND enforce slow play more. that was miserable to watch.
Games and coverage were great but watching games on fast forward completely kills the vibe and viewing experience, Id rather watch one game less but in normal speed
#MTGworlds
I really need to start saving screenshots of 'best limited format ever' tweets in week 1 of a new format. If I ever buy a really big house, that should be pretty good material to paint the walls with.
Ended up 3rd in the Rivals Gauntlet after a QF loss and working through the lower bracket, good for MPL next season. Lost to a teammate in the 95 card mirror in the lower bracket final, messed up the last game unfortunately, but JMM ended up winning the whole thing. Good times!
Leveratto got kicked out of our match on his second turn in game 1. The ruling for that is game loss. I get why but still, matches of this importance should not be played on a client where this can happen (and game state can't be restored). happened to me too, it sucks.
Flying to Las Vegas tomorrow to play in MC3. I didn't expect to play (m)any of these arena MCs and am quite excited to get a discretionary invite. I tested as much as possible (and then copied
@BraunDuinIt
's list). Thanks again,
@MagicEsports
and I hope I won't embarrass myself.
@PleasantKenobi
sounds punishable to me. there are rules for player communication: . - my understanding is you can't make up stuff with intend to misinform.
0-3'ed two drafts in a row. 0-2 in the 3rd, paired vs Huey. I win.
@ReidDuke
starts laughing, goes to his notepad and scratches out the Huey-win he already wrote down before we even played ... lovely.
I really don't understand the amount of rounds you play with draft decks on
@MTG_Arena
. I have no interest to play much more than 3 BO3 rounds with a draft deck. the cap on wins should be 4 and not 6 imo.
Well, this trip/invitation to go to Barcelona by wotc just turned sour. Wish I had seen that announcement before stepping on the plane, could've saved me some annoying travel and a fairly pointless modern GP.
that's about 150k demonstrating in Berlin to close down the right wing party AfD. whose ideology is essentially what the republican party in the US stands for. love it.
Berlin unfassbar: nach wenigen Tagen schon wieder über 150.000 Menschen auf der Bundestagswiese, um für ein AfD-Verbot zu demonstrieren.
@RegSprecher
, wann macht der Bundeskanzler endlich den Weg frei und blockiert das Verfassungsgericht nicht länger?
think I played between 10-15 games with a raza dragon-priest deck before I couldn't believe my bad luck and checked if the deck had a raza. it did not.
I'm so glad that
@OwenTweetenwald
's confidence is high for this tournament. that has been a real problem for him in previous events. so happy that he finally got around it and believes in himself!
If
@magicprotour
runs a team constructed PT again (and I hope they do), please start tracking individual players results on the score sheet so there's some data on how decks performed. would love to see that.
#PT25
@mtgaaron
maaaybe because standard decks are 300-400 each and most of the cards devalue completely once they rotate out? no one wanting to play FNM every other week can keep up with this as a hobby. could start by making duals uncommon. great for limited as well.
there were some questionable cards seeing print in recent sets but from a gameplay/fun point of view, winota might actually be the worst designed card.
just in case you haven't heard enough about the strange structure of worlds -
@SethManfield
was 10% to win worlds before the tournament started. Now he's in the top 4 and has about 8.5%. :)
I (and others) took thursday off work. and instead the entire tournament gets changed and we're playing only on friday but until 3-5 am local time. changing this 24h before we were supposed to start playing ... :/
tinkered for a jewelled bird, sacced it to swap it with my ante'd card, concede the game to put the match scored at 1-2 - but win the match & the tournament (invitational, winner gets his own card) on total ante value won.
Awesome run winning everything you can win in the current standard format with the same deck - invites to MC3, MC4 and the World Championship. Admittedly, I was rooting for Brad but still, that was just great to watch.
22yrs ago today—KAI BUDDE made his first major mark as one of Magic's best players of all-time when he won BOTH the 1999 World Championship & that year's Player of the Year award
Over the following few years, he followed those up with 6 other Pro Tour wins & 3 other PotY awards!
Short-term glory is nice and I must admit when I saw this Cat/Oven stuff, it looked hilarious at first. But is that fleeting glory really worth it? After hours of playing with/vs cat/oven, I now hope that whoever designed these cards receives eternal punishment,
@mtgaaron
.
The Prof is running an awesome fundraiser for
@TransLifeline
- and they've raised an incredible 60k already. To spice it up a little, I'm adding two MC playmats and a couple of eurolands (pic in next tweet), which I will ship to another donor that TCC will draw. Thanks everyone!
Want THREE (3) Masters booster boxes (2015, 2017, and Ultimate)? It's the Triple Masters giveaway!
#MTG
Just donate in multiples of $4.00 to
@TransLifeline
and I will send one donor ALL THREE boxes on Oct 30 at 6pm PST! I'll mail worldwide!

looks like it's okay to travel unvaccinated as long as you're well known/rich enough. pretty sad that the australian government caved in to team anti-vax. [assuming the excemption is for that and that he has no medical reasons for it - which seems ... quite likely]
american guy who watched karate kid a few too many times vs scottish lad with a highlander there-can-only-be-one complex. now that's something worth watching.
My TV claims it's 'smart' - but if it was really smart, it would know every 2 years that there's euros/world cup going on and this 'automatic turn off after 4h' isn't a thing for a few weeks.
my sister & brother (2nd generation, kind of, both ~20) had some beef and my sister proceeded to put confetti ... EVERYWHERE in his room (including drawers, clothes etc). this was my brothers response when she was gone for a while ... I'd just be way too lazy for this stuff. :)
first redbull untapped arena qualifier today and it looks like only 215 of 256 people showed up. given that a lot of people applied and weren't taken ... that's pretty sad. hope the guys that no-showed won't get into further versions of this.
That's a lot of colorful words for 'league/esport stuff is cancelled'. I agree with the decision given how it worked out, can't call that successful. The disappointing part is that this doesn't say anything about what's coming and what the organized play prize support will be.
As the world looks to a post-COVID future, we look toward the next iteration of Magic's competitive play system—one that recaptures the magic of the gathering while expanding play opportunities to a wider audience.
@SaffronOlive
LOTR maybe? i was kinda scared they'd horribly butcher mixing mtg up with such a huge universe where i read the books and watched the movies over and over. but I thought that was actually great (minus certain cards being a bit too powerful, but hey).
playing an esper-doom list by
@Eli_Kassis
and
@lsv
in standard. beat gruul and then UB Yorion. 5-0. mtg is easy if you draw well and your opponents don't. :)
the change from just 'pro tour' to a big convention with side events, a GP and a PT on the same weekend in the same location sounds like a really, really great change.
RIP esports. Welcome back, Pro Tour. From what I've read so far, this is roughly what I hoped for. Big world championship, 3 tabletop PTs/year with a good prize pool. And more events on a regional level. Bit confused that GPs are gone, but maybe that's just the regional champs?
Looks like I saved up all my run goods for this rivals gauntlet. 7-0 with our probably quite mediocre Izzet Yorion deck. Mostly playing vs Mutate, which seems to be a decent matchup. :)
All my opponents were a pleasure to play against. The PT felt quite a bit less cutthroat than in the old days, which is a good change. only
@makememesnotwar
was apparently so annoyed to lose to me that he then beat the crap out of every further opponent, but fair play to him. :)
Remember when I said all Pro Tours (i.e. MCs) would eventually be on Arena only and ppl were like "Evan you so crazy."
Ok.
Don't think this is the last stop. I continue to be very concerned for the future of paper Magic (at least in high level play).
sometimes my deck doesn't do all that much, sometimes your board looks like this on turn 3.
@CedricAPhillips
was the unfortunate recipient of that and he didn't draw much of anything in G2 either. 3-0.
company announcing big investment in e-sports. same company can't afford 1-2 guys to do text/photo coverage of their largest attendance tournaments with 1-2k players. I get the video coverage thing but seriously ...
@StanCifka
has live results for his private tournaments.
@roman_fusco
(2/2) For New Jersey forward, we’ll be posting critical end-of-tournament information on Sunday evening instead of round-by-round postings here and on our sites. Fans can still expect to see Top 8 decklists and tournament results on Sunday evenings
2022 was a prolific year for
@wizards_magic
!
📈10,498 card variations were printed: 14.7% of all cards in Magic history
📈425 new commanders were debuted: 25% of the total; 1.16 per day
📈Approximately 18% of all words in all rules text of all cards ever were printed in 2022
ah, the day of the ban/restricted-list update announcement. everyone tweets what should/needs to be done. bad news, boys & girls: wotc won't decide that today - you're too late. just sit back, relax and watch the trainwreck unfold.
@SaffronOlive
yeah. no one is forced to buy secret lairs. as long as they are reprints or not tournament legal, knock yourself out. if people want to buy that stuff, I'm all for it. would be nice if some of the problems got fixed though.
@bmkibler
aside from that problem, mtg was (and still is, probably more so) a luxury hobby. the entry cost was way too much of a barrier to talk about a meritocracy. especially back then pay to win was probably not a huge deal, but pay to play definitely was.
out of all the various #$@^@#$^ mtgo has going for itself the thing that gets me going the most is that there's no auction house. having to attempt to trade 33462346 bots until one is free to buy cards wants me to cancel my bilbao flight and play hearthstone.
Today 2001—Kai Budde meets Alan Comer in the final of Pro Tour Barcelona (Invasion block draft)
His win here cements Kai's Pro Player of the Year lead
It is also his 3rd PT win which earns him the record for most PT wins, a record he still holds (although his wins are now at 7)
@JS2mtg
deals with a bunch of problematic cards, chalice, sheoldred, yawgmoth. i talked a bit about it in a video
@AndrewCuneo
posted on his youtube channel.
first
@gabnassif
tried to sabotage me by getting me to play his gruul cat wagon.dec (1-5) - but it didn't work. 4-1 with gabriel's jeskai deck in historic and should be locked in for another exciting season of the rivals league. :)
what in this world is the price payout for the singleton queue though,
@MTG_Arena
? 500 entry, max 5 wins and that gets you 600g and 2 cards. Gone 5-1 three times. If I do that another 47 times, I've earned myself a draft. Yay!
