@karsten_frank @MtgSodek maybe the TO just allowed to play with the new cards? officially cards were only legal a month after release. I think for both formats. there was a GP in vienna, that was extended. maybe you remember if people had FoW? that would mean it was EX.

@TogoresMTG @karsten_frank @MtgSodek yeah, academy and windfall were banned end of 1998. before urza's legacy was released mid february 1999. but academy decks were legal for a while in standard. although i don't think there were any tournaments that really mattered while they were around.

@karsten_frank @MtgSodek also what's with folks (including you, sir!) saying memory jar. it's been a long time but i'm sure that card was never standard legal? sets took a month after release to become legal. and before that happened, jar was banned. this vampiric/tinker/jar/megrim deck was extended.

@mixedknuts @Sourcin13 yeah, thought about how real swiss pairings would work, but the only solution i could think of is neutral venues and fans wouldn't know where their team plays until 2 weeks before the match or so. don't think that's viable.

@mixedknuts the only reason that it's not outright idiotic is that you 'only' need top 24 of 36. you don't have any business to be in the KO stage if you can't get 12 points in 8 matches, even with more difficult opponents. but if the cut was 8 teams, this would be quite insane.
