*Staring wistfully from South Dakota*.
For the first time in our state's history, students in Minnesota will have access to free school meals. Period. No questions asked. Weโre making sure families like mine feel supported knowing that breakfast and lunch will be one less thing to worry about.

I called @siouxfallspd because a man with a long gun and a megaphone is ranting outside the Federal Courthouse downtown. I was told, "Ma'am, it's his freedom of speech and we're an open carry state.". We live in Hell.

Private ๐ Donors ๐ Shouldn't ๐ Have ๐ To ๐ Pay ๐ Off ๐ Public ๐ School ๐ Lunch ๐ Debt. That should be the government's responsibility. It is cruel and, frankly, unbelievable that South Dakota kids can go hungry during the day if their parents fall behind on payments.
Donors will pay off all negative meal accounts in the Sioux Falls School District this week, but after the donation, the district plans to put a cap on studentsโ negative balances.

"No free lunch". except for every single state legislator who receives a per diem at the expense of South Dakota taxpayers.
"Governor Kristi Noemโs Bureau of Finance and Management Commissioner Jim Terwilliger testified that 'the goals of this bill are well-intentioned,' but 'there is no free lunch, meaning someone still has to pay.'".

๐จ I've just learned that @GovKristiNoem officially signed my bill to provide free State IDs to individuals experiencing homelessness INTO LAW. This is the culmination of 3+ years of hard work, & I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who helped make this dream a reality.

Maybe someone will bring a free school lunch bill to the SD Legislature in 2024 to help combat childhood food insecurity across our state? ๐ . It's me. I'm someone.
According to Feeding South Dakota, about 24,750 South Dakota children, or about 11% of the school-aged population, remained โfood insecureโ in 2022.

My bill to help feed South Dakota's most vulnerable children died by 1 vote in today's committee hearing. While I'm disheartened with this result, as long as I serve in the state legislature, I will continue to fight for the expansion of school lunch programs and for our kids.
House Education Committee voted 8-7 Monday to kill bipartisan legislation from Democratic Rep. Kadyn Wittman to have state government help reimburse South Dakota public school districts for unpaid debt on student lunches.

I am deeply disappointed with the SD legislators who voted to keep #ChildMarriage legal this morning. Every child deserves protection & a chance to grow without the burden of premature matrimony. More than 80% of the child marriages in SD are between a minor girl and adult man.

As of 2020, @SenJohnThune had received $638,942 from the NRA.

This is why I have spent 4+ months building a coalition of stakeholders across SD to address this issue & champion school lunches during the '24 session. ๐๐ป. In SD, kids are legally obligated to attend school until age 18. The gov't should be legally obligated to feed them.
Studies have shown itโs hard for children to succeed in school when theyโre hungry. But many families canโt afford school lunch.

838: the number of minors who got married in SD between 2000-2020 (SD Dept. of Health). 81%: the percentage of these marriages where young girls wed to adult men. We need to protect our kids, which is why I introduced a bill today that would end child marriage in South Dakota.
VIEWPOINT: The correlation between early marriage and an increased risk of exploitation is well-documented.

South Dakota has spent $2.5 million dollars in the last 5 years on a program that we can't prove is working. I don't think it's too much to ask for data showing if this is a wise use of taxpayer dollars.
"Do we have any data that this has increased the pheasant population in South Dakota since 2019?" asked Rep. Kadyn Wittman, referencing a program that pays trappers to target predators. โNo, we do not,โ replied GF&P Secretary Kevin Robling.

Investment in high-quality child care and early learning programs can generate up to $7.30 per every dollar invested. Our government choosing to invest in childcare isn't just good for kids, families, and communities; it's also good for our pocketbook. Invest now, or pay later.
As parents across the state continue to deal with issues of affordable child care, Gov. Kristi Noem told a Watertown radio station last week not to expect much help from the state government.

I can not imagine spending so much time building barriers to stop people who are already poor and struggling from accessing food assistance programs. I'll pray for you, @RepDustyJohnson.
Democrats say my bill requiring 20 hours of work to receive welfare benefits is โpunitiveโ & โunnecessary.โ They're calling me extreme for believing able-bodied Americans should contribute in exchange for assistance. There's nothing extreme about believing in the dignity of work.

โIt is my belief that because children are in the care of the government while attending public schools, the government should be responsible for meeting basic needs โ one of which is food.". I said what I said. Thanks for shining a light on this important issue, @Phil_Lewis_ !.
A South Dakotaย bill aimed at feeding hungry schoolkids was killed by the state Houseโs education committee by one vote . โIf we couldย all vote with our hearts, I know that we would vote to support feeding our children. But there is a cost to these programsโ.

Last year during HB 1080 re: gender affirming care Rep. Jon Hansen said "We treat kids differently under the law. We do that because minors need our protections, theyโre prone to irrational decisions. Most of them donโt have the reasoning capacity to know whatโs best for them.โ.
Despite testimony to support @kadyn_wittman's bill to increase the minimum age for marriage to 18, Republicans killed the bill. Rep. Jon Hansen and Will Mortenson even spoke about why they think child marriage is good #sddems #childmarriage #SouthDakota #legislature

Some of the comments made by committee members during today's hearing to end #ChildMarriage turned my stomach. Let me be clear; 16-year-olds are CHILDREN who should not be getting married and it is our job as state legislators to put guardrails in place to protect our kids.
A House committee voted 8-5 to kill a bill that would have raised the minimum age of marriage to 18. Sponsored by Rep. @kadyn_wittman called the legislation โcrucialโ to protecting minor girls from exploitation.

I voted for this bill (it passed unanimously) because these funds were specifically meant to help South Dakotans and their families during emergencies & disasters *within our state*. It is a gross misuse of these precious funds to send SD Nat. Guards to the southern border.

Jon, do you think the statistics in your thread could perhaps be attributed to low teacher pay, lack of funding, and a student-teacher ratio that is much too high? Instead of *checks notes* a handful of books in the public library that you disagree with?.
As the public school lobby fights hard to keep books in the hands of young students that "instruct readers on the use of lube for sex and how to arrange hookups on Grindr," I decided to check in on how they are serving our kids academically. The results are not looking good. 1/.

Making sure children (the future of our state and world!) are fed shouldn't be a partisan issue. If we can't feed our kids, what else matters?. Consider this my formal announcement that I will be bringing the free school lunch bill back to the SD Legislature in 2024.
โThis is like taking food away from kids, and I hope we donโt want to be that kind of state.โ South Dakota's decision to reject federal food funding has prompted strong criticism. #FoodInsecurity #SouthDakota

There are 7 Democrats in the House of Reps. 11 Representatives stood for this bill. 24 were required to stand for this bill to be smoked out. Even if EVERY Dem in the House stood, this bill would have been SIX votes short. Do not place the blame of this failure on our caucus.
Today, Democrats (@RepErinHealy in particular) levied the patently false allegation that @KristiNoem did not do enough to promote eliminating the sales tax on groceries. Media reached out for my response to this preposterous claim. Here it is:

Apple Tree is the 3rd largest day care center in Sioux Falls. My heart breaks for the families that have less than a month to try and find childcare in a city that is already more than 700 daycare spots short. ๐. When will we acknowledge this crisis in the SD Legislature?.
A longtime day care center is closing its Sioux Falls locations next year. Parents received notice hours later that the centers will be closing on January 12, 2024.

I'm glad that my republican colleagues see the value in advocating for free school lunch for SD's kids. I've been working on this issue for 6 months with a statewide coalition, and I welcome all my legislative colleagues to join me on this effort! Full steam ahead!.
Another legislator has signaled support this week for bringing a school lunch bill that will alleviate costs for some students and their families.

Did you know. ๐ง Students with access to free breakfast have 17.5% higher scores on standardized math tests,.๐ฅ Access to free and reduced school lunches can lower chronic absenteeism by 5.4%,.๐ Receiving free or reduced lunch reduces childhood obesity rates by at least 17%.

I was shocked when I learned that 16-year-olds can get married in our state (and 800+ have over the last twenty years). Raising the age of marriage to 18 sends a clear message: South Dakota protects its children and prioritizes their safety. #EndChildMarriage.
Monday morning, several bills sponsored by Democrats will be heard. @kadyn_wittman introduced a bill to raise the minimum age for marriage to 18. Right now a 16-year-old can get married with their parent's consent. Please tell the House State Affairs Committee to support HB 1154.

โI donโt think thereโs a cost too great to invest in South Dakotaโs kids.โ . I will keep saying this, every day and for as long as I have to, until we start to make progress and ensure that no child goes to bed hungry.
Feeding South Dakota data shows that 1 out of every 9 children in the state is battling food insecurity. Representative Kadyn Wittman announced via an X post that she plans to bring a free school lunch bill forward this upcoming session.

Marijuana (both recreational & medicinal) should be legal, easily accessible, taxed, and regulated. Why is @FredDeutsch trying so hard to infringe on the rights of South Dakotans? Why is he against personal responsibility & choice when it comes to marijuana?.

When elected officials ignore the will of the people, they are no longer doing their jobs.
House voted 41-29 moments ago to ban homegrown marijuana in South Dakota. HB 1004 goes to Senate, where a bill was delayed Monday to cap homegrown at three plants per medical cardholder. Voters OK'd IM 26 with a minimum of three homegrown plants possible per cardholder. @keloland.

As an elected official, it is my JOB to participate in uncomfortable, difficult, and nuanced conversations in order to create laws that serve & protect my constituents. If a floor debate about sexual assault laws makes you uncomfortable, then maybe you shouldn't be a legislator.

Medical marijuana is the only thing that has made my younger brother's (a quad-amputee and two-time cancer survivor) chronic seizures manageable. Shame on @SenJohnThune for this. I would love to see him try and convince my mom that medical marijuana should be criminalized.
US Senator @SenJohnThune (SD) not only opposes recreational cannabis legalization โ he also opposes medical cannabis (no exceptions). He doesn't support medical cannabis for terminal cancer patients or people with unstoppable seizure disorders. 70% of his constituents disagree.
