Netherlands 🇳🇱
85.8% of over 18yo's fully vaccinated. 💉
Going into *full* lockdown tomorrow until 14 Jan (at least). Only essential shops open. 🔒
I'm confused. 🤷🏻♂️
two South Africans made news today:
+ Elon buying ~9% of twitter (now largest shareholder)
+ Roelof Botha named head of Sequoia, arguably the most successful venture capital firm ever.
more evidence the country punches above it's weight.

Amsterdam is a great option. Beautiful streets, access to everything that a world class provides, well kept and attractive parks on every block, museums, healthcare, police that are respected & effective. 5-year tax break for highly skilled. worldwide travel access.
haven't enjoyed a book as much as this in years. incredible tale of

she is only on that show because elon has called her out.
her career over the last decade has been fuelled by her hate of tech founders. this after building her initial fame celebrating tech and hitching her wagon to mossberg.
talk about narcissism.
3 things I believe to be true:
1. pandemic modelling has failed spectacularly (cf. Neil Ferguson of Imperial infamy)
2. academics are not held to account reputationally for COVID predicitions and therefore have zero SITG
3. there is nowhere where 'zero-covid' has worked
YMMV.
mind blown. learnt so much from this

don’t know much about this guy, seems like an incel cheerleader, but they would know he’s in the country by entering the country, no? immigration/border control are a thing in romania too.
@andrewchen
not just faang, right?
we know a company that became this too :-)
perhaps it’s corporations in general… in which case it’s a coordination problem at scale, albeit most acute at mega-profit tech cos
Deloitte going remote-first forever is far bigger than people realize
In one swoop they:
- forced McKinsey, Bain, BCG, PWC, KPMG & EY to be remote-first or lose all their best people to Deloitte
- established themselves as the best place for consultants to work
Jedi move 🧠
Three blow-ups in three months: Archegos, Greensill, and Melvin Capital.
What do they have in common? Insane leverage employed to maximize private gain, provided by lenders that can socialize losses.
New podcast from ET.
tldr: director of research at ARK - tesla tyre-pumper - missed accounting for the dilution of 165M shares. this would require north of $100B in cash for share buybacks in order to hit ARK price target. 🤯
(this should me big news given how influential ARK is in the market.)

@wintonARK
, Your taking the time to reply is again appreciated. I was going to let
@ARKInvest
's 2025 $TSLA $3,000 price target and your replies go but in thinking over the past several days a few of your answers just don’t resonate. Comments and a proposition follow...1/
Ive followed Bret from his Evergreen days. He is one of the least salacious and rational minds you'll find. And he used to be a staunch progressive in arguably the most progressive University in America. Bluest of Blues.
And yet, here we are.
Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying's DarkHorse podcast is one of the more prominent independent media ventures in the country, and on the verge of being shut down by YouTube:
Personal Update: Ive started at leading global business & corp development. Vay is a series-B startup (raised $95M last Dec from Atomico, Coatue, Kinnevik, et. al.) Recently out of stealth it was first to put remotely driven vehicles on the road in Europe.
@RitaPanahi
I gave a talk on the same bill as her in India for a large conglomerate a while back. She didn't mind that capitalist company nor taking its money then. 🤷🏻♂️
Ok, safe to say YT is failing at this 'moderation'. I've kinda rolled my eyes until now. RW & David are elite investigative journalism - it's refreshing. In this particular case, they went hard at Dark Horse/Brett for the very thing YT deplatformed them on.
Boggles the mind.
This is ludicrous. YouTube has just removed our film criticising the vaccine claims on the Dark Horse for "medical misinformation", possibly because we used a tiny clip of Steve Kirsch TO CRITIQUE it. What a cluster f*ck YouTube is. Bang the censorship drum loud and hard on this
It is possible to believe the lockdown _was_ right given the data at the time. But now, with more data (much lower CFR), the lockdown should be lifted quickly for the majority.
(While, slowly for the elderly, keeping social-distancing & making masks mandatory outside.)
this might be dumb, but why is it ok to say “South African variant” but not “Wuhan virus”?
either naming by geography is just that, the place of origin, or it is inflammatory, no? it strikes me as inconsistent.
i’m confused.
South Africa:
+ "load shedding" (blackouts) on a rolling & unpredictable basis
+ now, "watershedding" (no water) because reservoir pumps, which need power, can't fill tanks
+ and President, trying to get to an election rally, gets stuck on train that broke down, repeatedly.
🤯😥
rona anxiety is sucking up most of the oxygen, rightly, but this HK move by the CCP is really concerning. Likely a domino, that left unchecked, shapes geopolitics for the worse for a _long_ time.
Hongkongers were promised "one country, two systems"—at least until 2047. Instead, there has been a steady encroachment and erosion of what liberties they did have, and now a new law threatens a de jure abolition of the "two systems." Also, they were never asked what they want.
@lulumeservey
so good:
“fundamental failure to grasp the problem are due to a failure of leadership. A poorly written email is just the means through which that failure is revealed”
Ugh. Getting to that time of the year where everyone on twitter will start writing their retrospectives for 2020. Heads up: no one gives AF about your lessons at the best of times, but especially for 2020.
last flights coming into Johannesburg (ORT) airport.
(picking up my ma, who was almost stranded in Australia when all the airlines & airports started closing shop with 5 days notice. 3 cancelled bookings later and a 30-hour travel time via Dubai, and she's back 🙏🏼)

After 10 years of no exercise because of an elbow injury (no cartilage), and then 10 months of slow rehab I was finally able to do a deadlift on Friday. Proves body has supplemental infrastructure that can be built out around injury. Very chuffed. Fingers crossed.
unless i l love you (rich!) please don’t send me voice notes. i find it disrespectful.
why? if feels like you’re trying to save your time at the expense of my time and as such it signals you think your time is more important.

true leadership, this.
acknowledging the tough reality that is SA’s political climate yet providing a positive view of the future.

europeans are happier today.
of course, neither are set up well for the future (europe, economically and US, health). to paraphrase tolstoy: they are both equally broken but in different ways.
the covid origin story has been a complete failure by the so called expert-class. it matters deeply how this virus came to be.
and, what use is an expert-class if they act as a political-class? zero.
PSA: best handwashing image I've seen. And while most of us know this, I'm sure all of us miss doing it properly as we rush though our days. Single best way to prevent contraction (and spread).

i spend my saturday mornings taking my little dude to swimming & judo lessons. always thought i’d resent this part of parenting, but surprisingly its the favourite part of my life these days. humans are weird.

I'm a firm believer that if we had one or two high profile convictions for State Capture, it would tip confidence enough to put the country on the front foot again. Belief & hope are powerful forces and they appear to be in scarce supply rn.
This whole "remote work, work has changed forever" argument is in vogue, but wrong.
Humans coalescing is what differentiates us as a species.
The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle.

one that gives you the "what" & "why" within the first 3 sentences. if a person is worth asking something of, understand they are likely busy. being brief signals that you understand this and, importantly, respect it. i will respond to all emails, even cold, if this is done.
@DeanOelsch
love the sentiment but no chance a spurs sponsorship leads to a 1% growth in tourism. not even half a percent. furthermore, as you know, attribution on brand takes time.
math aside, philosophically, i think it’s hard to justify this spend when people still don’t have toilets.
