Perhaps the geopolitical moment has come for China to lead the world toward the zero-carbon world? Will China do so?
#Insights The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), or COP29, is currently underway in Baku, Azerbaijan from Nov. 11 to 22, with the focus on climate finance. Janos Pasztor, Former UN Assistant Secretary-General on Climate Change said in an exclusive interview with China News Network that the world needs to explore new ways of financing, engaging more with the private sector including finding different ways to tax financial transactions. He noted that China has advanced a lot with regard to climate action and suggested that it is perhaps time for China to build on its past successes and play a leading role at the global level in tackling climate change.

In May, when I accepted to work as an independent consultant for Stardust, one of my conditions was that all remuneration I received would be given to an NGO. Having observed the unbearable worsening of the humanitarian situation in Palestine, and in addition today’s decision by the Israeli Government to ban @UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) from operating within Israel, I have decided instead to make my remuneration available to UNRWA. While not an NGO, UNRWA is the key UN agency (mandated by the UN General Assembly) to provide assistance to Palestinians). As of today, I have transferred US$ 19,000.- to UNRWA, reflecting the totality of the remuneration I have received from Stardust to date.
On 2 May I posted here about my work as an independent consultant to Stardust Solutions, a USA/Israeli startup, to provide views and recommendations on the governance implications of their work on stratospheric aerosol injection. As promised, my report would be made public, and is currently available on my LinkedIn page Beyond Stardust, I hope that the ideas in this report will be of use for other startups, whether for- or non-profit, but also for relevant state and non-state actors. In some ways, this is uncharted territory. But I do believe the report addresses some key issues. I also hope that by making this available publicly, it will encourage different actors to reflect on these, and to come up with their ideas on what the governance implications are, and what can be done about them. I look forward to your feedback on this report.

Thank you @CatClifford for facilitating this discussion with @DKeithClimate and @orbuch . There is so much more to discuss; these discussions should involve more and more people with different perspectives; and time is of the essence...
I moderated a panel on Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (sunlight reflection) for @SOSV's digital climate conference on behalf of @CipherNews. It was an absolutely FASCINATING discussion with @DKeithClimate, @orbuch, & @jpasztor and is well worth a listen:

I have a range of concerns. But on the science and policy interface, I believe an important issue is the lack of sufficient societal conversations about the risks, benefits and governance challenges of using or not using SRM - which are needed to help the development of evidence-based and societally acceptable policies for SRM. I look forward to the conversation tomorrow.

I can't wait for this talk on solar geoengineering with the absolute best of the best in the field: @DKeithClimate at @UChicago, @orbuch at @lowercarbon & @jpasztor, formerly of the @UN. On behalf of @CipherClimate for @SOSV. Agenda & registration here:

Just spent a few days in sweltering (as I write 37C) Washington DC, attending an @ASU workshop @farooque, as well as having bilateral meetings - all linked to addressing the #climatecrises, including #governance of #SRM. The concensus was clear about the seriousness of the status quo, and on the need to accelerate work on all options available, including developing more effective approaches to engage relevant stakeholders. There is a lot to do.

I will be giving a talk tomorrow, 7 May starting at 14:00 in Budapest on climate change in Hungarian (Moving toward or avoiding “Hothouse” Earth). If you are interested to join online, please let me know and I will send you the Webex coordinates via direct message. Do remember that the talk and the Q&A will be in Hungarian.

And let me add two more points (again from my detailed social media posting): (1) I have no financial interest in doing this. The money I earn for the work will go straight to an NGO working on climate change, and (2) all the report(s) that I will write will be transparently available to all, and the analyses and recommendations will be addressing all actors, not simply Stardust…

@Eaterofsun Oliver, no, I don’t have detailed info on this yet. The question of funding will, however, be a key part of the governance issues to be looked at. So, as I responded earlier to other questions: watch this space…
