The parade, between Stonehaven Town Hall and Dunnottar Church, will not go ahead, after councillors determined the march could have been a threat to safety and community life.

The union cited the threats of redundancy for over 30 members of staff as another reason to take action.
My team and I at

The move comes as news of a £15 million budget shortfall was announced yesterday.

Our reporting was factual. I'm not going to entertain allegations of 'tabloid style journalism' -- Union members told us they feared retribution by being placed on such a list.
Strikes ≠ MAB in the eyes of management, hence the increased punitive measures for participating a
@thegaudie
@aberdeen_ucu
Terrible piece of tabloid-style journalism, full of non sequiturs. A purely technical breach of GDPR with zero implications. Management already knew all the names of strikers, so idea this spreadsheet needed for them to "discriminate" against UCU members makes no sense.
It seems that the pursuit of truth is officially "vexatious," according to
@aberdeenuni
Both of my FOI requests were rejected today, as I've apparently asked too many questions of senior management...
Extraordinary.
I think
@aberdeenuni
students deserve to know why senior management declined to return partial pay deductions to UCU members, now that MAB is over.
That decision would have provided an opportunity for the semester to get off on the right foot- instead, strikes are back in full.
Head of Modern Languages
@NadiaKiwan
says that if plans management are approved,
@aberdeenuni

She also notes the negative effect cutting degree programmes would have on decolonising the curriculum.
BREAKING NEWS:

Alternative staff-led proposals were not taken up
Staff and students will now turn to the picket lines.
The

Here's hoping Court makes the right decision and removes the threat of redundancy from those in the department.

Several positions in Spanish, French, and German have opened up at

One of the most shocking things from today was the apparent disregard for local UG students.
Prof Leydecker essentially confirmed that departments whose numbers have declined more than ML but generate more income (due to int students/postgrads) aren't at risk of closure...
THE LATEST: Language degrees at
@aberdeenuni
will be cut if management's "default option" is approved.
It is unclear how many staff are at risk of redundancy.
As much as I love
@aberdeenuni
, one of our biggest issues is the failure of leadership to communicate with students. Our rector doesn't respond to emails, our principal hasn't addressed students in years, members of Court are uncontactable.
Is this common practice in Higher Ed?

From the summer, but worth sharing again due to the current crisis
@aberdeenuni
senior management salaries have skyrocketed during the last five years.
Just four senior managers made £100k in 2018, compared to nine in 2023.

Big things to come in the new year (it's time to win some silverware)

NEW: I'm told there is a "real possibility" that UoA Senate tables a no-confidence motion in Senior VP Karl Leydecker in the New Year.
A source with knowledge of the situation says KL is "running out of goodwill" among senators due to his handling of the languages consultation.

2) Mandates that the ongoing consultation be halted until a plan is presented to Senate for review...

That's why
@thegaudie
has officially invited representatives from
@aberdeenuni
and
@aberdeen_ucu
to participate in a public discussion on the industrial action, where students can ask questions about what's going on.
Students are sick and tired of being ignored. Tonight's meeting proved that, as scores of students turned up in a bid for answers.
That's why it's all the more unfortunate that all we received were curt responses and evasive replies.

"It shouldn't just be about whether [modern languages] are making money or not. It should be: Are they providing a service to the reputation of the University?"
Why the importance of modern languages at
@aberdeenuni
extends far beyond how much income they generate.
90% of Scottish oil and gas jobs are located in and around Aberdeen.
So it's interesting that Starmer didn't mention the city by name in his speech Monday.
He's been to 'Wick, Glasgow, Inverness, Kirkcaldy, Rutherglen, Fife, and Leith' in the last year- why not Aberdeen?
Students are participating in a performance art piece in support of the modern language department.
Passersby are being encouraged to pin messages of support protesting the proposed closures to the performer.
BREAKING: University management and
@aberdeen_ucu
may be on the cusp of a settlement.
Members will vote on a proposal which would see strikes end in exchange for MAB deductions being used to set up a staff hardship fund, as well as key concessions on casulised contracts.
This is disingenuous. There is a lot more to this story than a poster in the breakroom.
There appears to be a clear environment of hostility towards trans and NB students, and
@aberdeenuni
must take proactive steps to solve the problem.
Rowan is unhappy that a poster has been put on a noticeboard at Aberdeen University which says "Let Women Speak". Which was ripped down.
This begs a couple of questions.
If Rowan believes 'transwomen are women', why doesn't them want these 'women' to speak.
And, why is

I want to be very clear. I submit FOIs of SMT correspondence b/c such communications ARE newsworthy, esp. as UoA's public perspective on issues like strikes or RAAC are often unclear and opaque.
To suggest I submit FOIs to cause annoyance or disruption is simply comical.
