This dude spent 4 years reporting in his spare time to make Brazil’s first breakout true crime hit, Projecto Humanos. It was an honor to share a stage with
@mizanzuk
at
#SpotifyForPodcastersSummit
- now I gotta learn Portuguese so I can actually listen to it!
My technologically inept father, who is very much alive and well, just accidentally announced his death to all of his friends and relatives by BCCing his entire address book while preparing this announcement for my stepmom to send out — hopefully many years from now.
It's always a little scary putting a new thing into the world, but I have a new show that drops today. It's called HOOKED, and it's produced by
@campsidemedia
in partnership with
@AppleTVPlus
and
@ApplePodcasts
. This one has been in my life a long, long time. Let me explain...
This robbery was outrageous. But the guys who pulled it off -- they're the reason I did this story. What happens to the architects of a masterpiece, when that masterpiece is a crime.
Yesterday was a big day for
@ChameleonPod
. We woke up to news that
@spotifypodcasts
picked us as one of the 20 best new shows of 2020, and ended the day with news that the Con Queen suspect we unmasked in ch 9 was arrested in the UK. He's now in custody. The scam is finally over!
It's fun when reporting surprises you. I started this story by going out in search of a guy who was very good at bank robbery. It took some twists from there.
“That is the beginning of the heroin epidemic,” Hathaway says.
How a raging heroin addiction fueled a former Boeing engineer’s 14-month, 30-bank robbery spree

Watching the Titan thing unfold last week was very strange for me, because the story I was hearing was not the one playing out in public. So I wrote a thing.
@joshdean66
, a journalist with solid contacts in submersibles world, says his sources felt sure almost immediately that the Titan had imploded. Could the media have done a better job of letting us know that this was, by far, the most likely outcome?
Some personal news: I am apparently writing another book. I have yet to commence research and I am already stressing out about having to ask people for blurbs.
I've been working on this one a long time. Close to 3 years -- though it sometimes feels like 30. Very proud of the result, and of the magical mix by
@MfMcAdam
, my podcast partner for Con Queen and Hooked, too. This one is very different! Hopefully in mostly good ways.
Campside's first wholly owned podcast premieres today! Hosted by
@joshdean66
, White Devil is about a wealthy woman who is found on a pier in Belize late at night, next to a body...and what happens next.
Worst kept secret in my family is now out. It feels good to finally share some news that is not terrible! Proud to be building something with these two, and Adam Hoff, who is maybe not on Twitter.
@AlecMacGillis
@BerkshireEagle
Some of you may recall that my dad — who is very much still alive — emailed his version of this out by accident to his entire address book about two years ago
Very excited that we can finally talk about what will be
@campsidemedia
's first talk show -- though it's way more than that. Coming ... soon-ish, and hosted by some Twitter influencer named
@RexChapman
.
Psst.
I can’t wait to guide you all through the wild, incredibly unique, and often hilarious world of sports team/franchise owners.
OWNED is coming soon from

Be on the lookout…
So the final ep of HOOKED is live. You can now binge the entire series
@ApplePodcasts
. I've never spent so long on a story. I was talking to Tony before The Clearing came out and while we were chasing the Con Queen, for
@campsidemedia
's first show (cont'd)
Bittersweet day, sharing the final episode of our show. Thus concludes really 3 years of work, and I'm very proud of what we did. Please listen if you haven't. And thank you if you have.
Congrats to the formidable
@mizanzuk
who I met in Brazil in 2019, after he had DIY produced a hit investigative podcast. Very proud to have
@campsidemedia
w/ him for this, our 1st foreign language show, in which he may have solved another notorious crime
Extremely proud to FINALLY be sharing this with the world.
@campsidemedia
’s first talk show, which takes you inside one of the most exclusive clubs on earth. Hosted by the great
@RexChapman
in partnership with
@SmartLess
and

Chameleon was our first show and franchise. It will always be special to me. And this is such an incredible new show and story from the great

(Thread alert) Today, the first show from our new company,
@campsidemedia
comes out. It's called
@ChameleonPod
and it's the story of this really bizarre scam that's been haunting Hollywood for years now. A little over a year ago, I got a call from a couple guys in Hollywood...
Very happy to have one of the only magazine stories I wrote this year (for
@gq
) make
@pocket
's year-end most read/best of long form list, here: (The article is here: )
A whole new season of Suspect, featuring the return of MC
@matthewshaer
on the mic. Just an incredible story of justice gone awry, featuring one of the coolest law classes in all the land, led by
@larabazelon
About sums it up: “Nukes in the air...crazy guys with mines on their chests yelling at the North Koreans to come on over, the KPA less than 100 meters away with machine guns trained on us, and me and my buddies are standing around with ax handles and .45s”
We have a new show! And it's SO GOOD! It's an Audible show, so you'll need a subscription, but this would be a great reason to try it out! Just incredibly exciting and moving work here by
@lindskilbride
@wambamash
@AbukarAdan17
and the great Sean Flynn.
In 2003, two half-starved boys emerged from the wilderness, and were cared for by a small Canadian town, but there was a problem – they weren't who they said they were.

Here's Hargobind Tahilramani -- back when he was pretending to be a food world influencer in London. He hired a photographer to take his portrait. Photo by Samuel Hauenstein Swan who, remarkably, actually got paid!
Yesterday, we released our show's final episode. Today, we're sharing an exclusive new photo of the Con Queen suspect.
Don't miss Chapter 10.5––an epilogue that shares new details about the suspect's unusual life. Listen here:
@pamelacolloff
I failed at this twice, and am now TRYING to be diligent about this on the third attempt, but track the sources as you go, in footnotes or whatever. I'm using Scrivener and putting them in comments. But then of course there are days when I completely forget.
In just a couple of weeks, the first podcast from Campside Media goes live. It's got it all: a wild scam, a wily con artist, a handful of the biggest names in Hollywood, and some dogged detective work from
@joshdean66
+
@vanessagrigor
. Set your calendars:
All this talk about "the My Pillow guy" Mike Lindell visiting the White House means it's probably a good time to revisit this, his origin story. Wrote this 4 years ago. Feels like 40.
@BradfordPearson
Seriously, they could have run this guy and he would have won in a rout. (Actually, dammit: I decided to check on him before posting this and Pedals was apparently hit by a car?! RIP, Pedals.)
@adamwren
@JoshRoiland
@dankaufman70
I would never argue that DFW is above rebuke — or even that all of his non-fiction is 100% accurate — but how can you challenge a guy’s “journalism” and then fail to find and interview the key figure here: his fact checker?
Okay, I think that's it. Please subscribe to the show here and, if you like it, rate and review. This isn't just a podcast cliché. It really does help. And if you don't like it, well, we have more shows coming down the line. Fin.
I can’t decide which of the 500 tributes to RT, bc they are all worthy and also … somehow not enough? Grant was as real as it gets, as a human and a journalist. Kind and fearless, as well as genuine, in a business that tends to only reward one of those things. RIP, friend.
For those of you who are incurable SR-71/YF-12 fans...a little bit of Lockheed Love....A Code One article and a pdf of Kelly Johnson's original "white paper"....
Which reminds me to say this: Our show, The Clearing launches today. Find episodes 1 and 2 wherever you get podcasts. We put a lot of work into bringing this story to life. Going on 3 years for me. Here's a link:
If I hadn’t dedicated my first book,
Show Dog, to my mom, I would have dedicated it to Fred Willard. Best in Show was obviously the inspiration and he was just so good — in there and everywhere.
A really important show, made with another exciting journalism start-up
@LongLead
, and hosted by the great Garrett Graff (
@vermontgmg
). Very proud of this, and of the work of the team, led by Ryan Sweikert, who is either not on Twitter, or just lurking behind a burner.
Incredibly excited to launch the new season of my

Happy launch day to our latest show, Friendly Fire, which is season 2 of our
@SonyPodcasts

but come to the Ford Library 10/11 at noon to learn the real story behind this amazing vessel. Author Josh Dean & NAME alums who worked on this top secret mission will share their stories from the unbelievable Project Azorian.
On the other hand, it's just a new version of a story so many Americans could tell — about a pill, prescribed by a doctor, that blew up their lives. Tony's lucky in that he lived through this. But he lost a lot. I know the opioid crisis seems so huge, almost abstract ...
Yesterday, the Sacklers were allowed to walk with their fortunes, and no other punishment. Meanwhile, there are SO MANY stories like this...of lives ruined.
I’m thinking of firefighter Troy Lubinski, who killed himself last year when he couldn’t survive his opioid addiction. That’s Stephanie, who has cancer now; she wrote Judge Drain a letter begging him to make the Sacklers feel the pain her family felt from Troy’s death.

He wasn't some career criminal, or mastermind. He was an engineer at Boeing -- or, he had been one -- until he hurt his back, and was given Oxycontin by his doctor. I think you see where this is going. Tony ended up on heroin, living in a car, with his son ...

People who hear his story will come out of this with a very different understanding of the hell one company unleashed upon America. And you'll think differently about addicts and addiction...about why the people you read about in the news ended up doing bad things...
How did America get the far right so wrong? What will it take now to get it right?

This was a pretty small news story I found, and there wasn't much to it beyond those facts, which surprised me. This felt like a missed opportunity. So I wrote to the guy, whose name is Tony Hathaway. A week or so later, he wrote back from prison, and told me the real story...
