@walterkirn Early in the COVID years I saw him interviewed on Uncommon Knowledge. I was immediately impressed and subsequent events only enforced that. Let's hope for a quick approval with a minimum of Democratic stupidity.

@EricLDaugh Come on. He may have been talking to Sununu when he said it but I am sure he was thinking of Tobin.

The whole issue of academic under-achievement for black Americans is simply a non-story. Murray's co-written book "The Bell Curve" caused a national scandal while "Facing reality", published a few years ago, went by with hardly a peep. SAT scores are downstream of the NAEP scores so these results are not surprising. When the conversation broaches black results it is always couched in terms of the difference between black and white scores. That is not the problem. The problem is that in absolute terms the black scores are terrible. In 2019 (the last time scores were published for black 12th graders) 66% could not do basic math with less than 1% being able to do advanced match. Post COVID scores are supposed to come out in 2025 and I am sure they will be worse given the extended schools closings. Supposedly DOGE is going to turn its attention to DOE. When it does, it will be interesting to see if there is honest discussion of the state of black academic achievement and the role of public education.

Let me stick with the US. I think that most American Catholics recognize two things about the Catholic Church: (1) It is the Christian church that traces its roots directly back to Christ. (2) Over the centuries, perhaps starting in 312 CE with the conversion of the Roman Emperor Constantine, the Church has developed a supranational administrative arm that is just as political as any other large organization that has ever existed. Much of European history attests to that. Regarding the infallibility of the Pope, a number of other posters have described the concept of speaking ex cathedra. As a result of checking some points to write this post I discovered some interesting facts. (a) Pope Francis is a Jesuit, that I knew, (b) He is the first Jesuit pope, did not know (c) Historically the Jesuits have often gotten involved in political situations of the day, (d) from 1773 to 1814 according to ChatGPT the Jesuits were banned by the Pope and European monarchs for alleged political interference. Plus ca change.

@MrGlass61145253 @RealDianeYap Thanks for the tip. I will have to save my pennies though. Even the kindle edition is quite expensive.
