A huge thank you to my PhD supervisor @LizMillerCU for her guidance and kindness. Without @xlichem and his analyses, this paper would not have its current shape. I also thank Manu Hedge and his group for experimental guidance with with IVT crosslinking and great discussions!
Really proud of this paper just out in JCB. At almost every turn, SURF4 surprised us. Amazing PhD student, @jmaldutyte, sleuthed it out.

I am really happy that my PhD paper is finally out! 🥳Here we show that the ER cargo receptor SURF4 is able to export distinct proteins using different mechanisms. It may use a co-receptor TMED10 or engage cargo co-translationally!🤯
.@jmaldutyte, @LizMillerCU et al. @MRC_LMB show that traffic of soluble secretory proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum by the export receptor, SURF4, is remarkably complex. #Biochemistry #Membrane #Trafficking #ER_literature

Markus is a superb scientist and a great person, get in touch with him if you are interested in a position in his lab in sunny Barcelona! ☀️
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll start a lab at the CRG in Barcelona next spring! We’ll investigate how cells tune protein production by selective co-translational mRNA degradation to control protein homeostasis and microtubule dynamics! 😎🧪👇

🤩🤩🤩 such impactful and transformative work for the whole of molecular biology community, including my own PhD. Very well deserved!
BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”
