At lunch a stranger approached my husband and cried ‘hello David!’ and then ‘oh my God you’re not David, I thought you were cheating on Rochelle!’ and honestly it was the most exciting thing that’s happened since I moved to New Jersey

While I have tremendous respect for the founders of Clue + German privacy laws, I have little faith that fascist American police will not forcibly seize phones

Me, in case it wasn’t clear, I was one of those young women, who lost hope of being taken seriously after a senior male journalist hit me on the thigh with an Ann Summers riding crop as I walked past his desk, much to the collective mirth of those who witnessed it
@DGlaucomflecken
As a patient, I’d like every patient to be assigned a professional advocate who will attend every appt + can communicate well with patients + providers. I have many privileges (time, education, family support, insurance) and navigating my care is still draining + dehumanizing
@MsOregonian
I still have my report card that said ‘Jean could work to improve her mile time’ after I had a full asthma attack and had to walk most of it. Your kid has done so well!
@chimenesuleyman
Love how it’s framed as something he put through calm consideration alongside other social issues rather than the result of intense misogyny
I wrote about quite a few ex-boyfriends in my memoir. But what felt like the best revenge of all was when my editor and I agreed that the most unkind one was narratively irrelevant
When people tell you who they are, believe them! The UK is so long overdue for self-interrogation about the particular way that sexual abuse has been celebrated as a fun part of British culture
@NataliaHodgins
Had my first pelvic exam at 14 bc I had severe abdominal pain and the (female) nurse said: ‘don’t worry, the doctor is handsome, just like on ER’
Can we discuss the party bags that are handed out at the end of kids’ parties? Does any parent enjoy creating or receiving them? Shall we all agree to have a moratorium on these little sacks of sweets and tchotchkes?
I’ve had a pretty successful career since then doing other things, and maybe I would never have succeeded as a broadsheet editor either — but I’ll never know, will I, whether I wasn’t good enough at the job, or if I just wasn’t good enough at playing whatever that game was
Today I found a gold necklace that someone gave me when I was 16. At the time I thought 'this is for a 40-year-old woman!' and tossed it aside...but guess what I am now!
@moorehn
Medication, therapy, exercise, stress reduction when possible, and eventual acceptance that it's OK to co-exist alongside depression rather than 'beat' it. I'll always have depression; thanks to these things (and time!) I'm rarely depressed
My family and friends are wonderful ppl but they’re not popping by to offer me help with my children for me to refuse bc they live 4000 miles away or they have their own children and/or jobs
@ZakiyaNJamal
35. Among my friends ppl either married or committed to someone they met in college or someone they met in their 30s; 22-30 was not a productive era for long term relationships
The truest demonstration of love and commitment from my best friends is that they will never, ever stop sending me articles about the sub-minor celebrity I went on one date with in 2014
(I’ll also add that this was not Cohen but one of his contemporaries. In my estimation it was just part of the culture: the reaction around me showed that it was not regarded as shocking or surprising)
@dave__whiteside
Watch a video or at least read up in detail on c-section – just in case. I had an unplanned one 2 hours after arriving in hospital + my poor husband had symptoms of PTSD for many weeks afterwards bc he had no idea of what it entailed (2nd planned section was much chiller)
Someone wrote a 1-star review accompanied by a poem before my memoir was published; when I objected to GoodReads they said it had to stay up for the integrity of the community
This is interesting, but I think that one of the reasons it’s hard to make new friends in your 30s is because many ppl who find this difficult are also not very…friendly
1) It's hard to make new friends in your 30s
2) People report being 25% happier when they live close to friends
3) Family isn't enough to provide the robust safety net we crave
So why don't we live closer to our friends? Some theories:
Inspired by an earlier exchange, I’m going to do a thread entitled It’s Not To Late To Pivot for writers who are feeling 😓 about the struggle to make ends meet through creative work they really care about
TL:DR You have the skills you need to make bucks in content
Brilliant writers here. But writing is not ice dancing — you can be full of promise after 35, too. And for women authors in particular, not getting started young is often a result of the incompatibility of writing with supporting oneself + family

Learned today that my 4 year old was melancholy because he believed that summer camp meant he would be sent off to live alone in a tent for some indeterminate time (it’s sprinklers and art projects at his preschool)
This week I won an award for talking about Lynch syndrome! Grateful to
@Alive_And_Kickn
for the recognition. Finding out you have Lynch syndrome is bad news that’s good to know. But 90% of Lynch carriers don’t know. looking forward to continuing to work together to change that
For twenty years this Polaroid of my dad cooking latkes hung on my great-aunt’s wall, and then a few years ago her daughter sent it to me. Memento of the best family times at the table with all the leaves in. Chag Sameach!
If your parents fully paid for your undergrad degree and you believe that you’re qualified to state that other people should have no problem paying student loans…they may be entitled to compensation
Love the reply dads who are like ‘yeah this is dumb I’m so engaged with my family responsibilities but don’t ask me to buy birthday presents, not for me, lol’…you’re proving the point, pals
@clhubes
Lol so true. With my first I was like ‘well, it was an emergency c section but not like an EMERGENCY’ but then I had a scheduled section for my second and realized that the first was, in fact, quite hectic

@KayBurley
It’s pathetic that the UK media is not simply taking this as an opportunity to stand on the side of human rights, but instead engaging in platforming fascism, just because it originates in the US
Went back to the gym for the first time since my mastectomy this morning and I cried: in part because I was so happy + relieved to be back. In part because of the tangible reminder that I now move through the world with two water balloons in my chest. Life!
@JessGrose
I feel real envy of fathers who are allowed to identify or be identified as incapable of carrying out basic parenting tasks that mothers simply can't opt out of without being seen as cold or even negligent
Lots of journalists and presenters today throwing their hands in the air at the idea of free school meals as a universal provision. Britain’s obsession with “people getting something for nothing” is a brain disease that even evidence that universality is a positive cannot defeat.
@HannahCaC79
Speaking from my specific experience working in the offices of the Obs when I was 26/27, senior male employees leveraged the power they had over careers of young women to create a culture where sexual harassment was tolerated. Ofc it’s reprehensible anywhere/at any age
@magsrdoherty
NYC city hall w 2 witnesses, splendid new dress + suit, no reception, weekend at Airbnb in the Catskills. Loved it, would do again but would have gone on a fancier + longer honeymoon if I’d known how hard it is to travel with small kids 🤷🏻♀️
@stacybmitchell
@clhubes
I think more than tangential bc it is part of this culture of ‘physician wives’ being a separate identity group that feels quite anachronistic!
@clhubes
We got 'we accepted your secret little note' followed a few days later by 'oh wait someone else gave us ANOTHER secret little note so we're picking them instead'
I also started my career doing unpaid writing for upstart publications, but I’m not going to recommend it! I’m glad your journalism career worked out well, but you can choose to leverage your power to help bring young people up, or you can require them to suffer because you did
At Passover, I always think of my relatives who went through so much to get to the United States so their descendants could live freer lives (also they look like they were fun)
What if instead of demanding a pledge of allegiance at his coronation, Charles pledged to donate his fortune to the NHS? Just spitballing, open to other ideas
Her clothes are awful but that's how you know she is a real rich person (amazing dramaturgy). Nothing exudes wealth like people taking you seriously even when your clothes are ugly
What this entertaining story does not mention is that Brits have been doing the reverse for a long time, particularly when they want to signify when they’re saying something stupid
And PS, if you’re trying to model your career on someone who publishes 6 freelance articles a year + has a pleasant lifestyle in London or NYC, they have another source of income whether it’s this kind of work, another job, or a partner with a salaried job. There, I said it!
@jdesmondharris
I’ve had this job! It is wearing on the self esteem when everyone else seems busy and important and you’re underemployed, perhaps more so at an employer than others may envy. The only answer here is a new job; in the meantime, a more productive hobby
@LeslieStreeter
What’s especially remarkable to me is that these royal visits are so carefully planned that they do a dry run the day before with their reps + security…and yet still no one figured it out
