@JonathanMerritt As you know, I’m no fan of Franklin Graham. But is there a lot of competition to set up such hospitals? Any redundancy? Any hint that of discrimination against sexual minorities? To invoke good ol’ D. L. Moody, “I like my way of doing it better than your way of not doing it."

I don’t always agree with @jonkay , nor with everything in @Quillette (although one tires of these all-too-necessary disclaimers), but he’s right on in this excoriation of woke journalism in Canada that fails to defend free speech, true victims, and good sense.

@nytdavidbrooks @mboorstein I appreciate Mr Brooks’s reflections, but I’m surprised that Native Americans get only a parenthetical reference. Surely the sins against them are America’s first sins, and reparation/reconciliation needs to be considered in regard to both communities, no?

Funny how a generation of theological educators—who nod respectfully toward the ideas of Bonhoeffer, Polanyi, Palmer, and Vanier—keep pushing distance education. I’m all for distance education…so long as no one pretends it’s just as formative as a residential community.

@JonathanMerritt Fundamentalism fashions a brittle faith outlook that either keeps its shape under pressure…or snaps. Lots of ex-fundies are, therefore, agnostics…or converts to some other extreme religion. Some of us, however, just leave fundamentalism w/o a big to-do. And stay Christian.

The estimable @davidfrum preaches a sermon on Winthrop (and Matthew’s, and Jesus’s) challenging phrase, “city on a hill.” The Gospel refers to the Church, but so long as Americans want to apply it to the USA, it comes with a heavy implication, as David properly says.

As the #NothanksRavi scandal unfolds, there are a LOT of organizations who refused to deal with @RaviScam ’s diligent documentation & earnest entreaties. Admirers of an intellectual poseur, they refused to do their due diligence to keep the $ & people coming in. Shameful.

I've been scratching my head about this for a long while now, and maybe have something helpful to say about this troubling mystery... via @RNS

Ouch: John Wesley says, “Our prayers are the proper test of our desires…. What we may not pray for, neither should we desire.” Well, of course, of course. And also, ouch. (I find sanctification truly inconvenient.)

GKChesterton: "Christianity has not been tried & found wanting; it has been found difficult & not tried.” Many Christians, incl. pastors & teachers, have found understanding the Old Testament difficult, and so happily abandon it for a New Testament they think they understand.

Disgust at the extremes of the Religious Right—or Left—should not prompt evangelical preachers to retreat to mere piety + evangelism, but to a deeper & broader Biblical politics. Will pastors help their congregants make better choices? Will seminaries train pastors to do so?

@davidfrum There you go again, with your logic and consistency and historical knowledge and other distractions and obfuscations. (You say it “bears repeating,” my friend, but I’m not sure it does: Surely those who get it got it, and those who didn’t, won’t. [sigh])

People who insist that their relationship with you requires that you agree with all their values are not looking for friends. They're just looking for fans.

Again, please be clear that friends mourning the death of Ravi Zacharias should skip this link. I don’t want to disrupt. Those who wonder, tho, why some of us don’t celebrate him as an exemplary apologist might want to click it.
