Self-pub IS a valid path to publishing. I’m 100% FOR self-pub. There are MANY great reasons to do it.
But it shouldn’t be a consolation prize. It’s a small business, meaning hard work + $$. To succeed, you have to be all in for the long haul.

True! Some editors request additional materials even if it is ready to query and we're interested because we hope to see something we can help with, so a shiny submission package doesn't mean an automatic pass based on seeming ready. A lot of factors are considered.

I start with the full ms because then if I'm not connecting with the first page, I skip down some to see if it changes
