ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!!!
I am so excited to finally announce that my Adult Gothic Horror, THIS HOUSE WILL FEED, will be hitting shelves in Fall of 2025. This book took YEARS to write, and I've jokingly called it my magnum opus, but know that this book is the book of my soul
#booktwt
So. I just got off the phone with my mom. My sister, who is 7 months pregnant, and a nurse, contracted COVID, Her O2 is low, and she's very, very sick. If any of you are praying people, and could spare a prayer, please say one for her.
It's time for some real talk on this Friday morning. Publishing might be opaque AF, but if you want some peace of mind about what's been going on in the query trench for the last **checks wrist** two yrs, read on. Some are NOT going to like what I have to say
#writingcommunity
This is so freaking dangerous. We're talking about a software evaluating submissions for grammar...which can be boiled down to software eliminating submissions based on voice. I have no words.

This tweet is dedicated to all my old crones who KEEP persisting, & keep writing. Because today, I can announce that I'm rep'd by

I got in trouble for saying this on main a few years back, but since the discourse is circulating again, I'll say it again: YOU DO NOT NEED A DEGREE IN CREATIVE WRITING TO BE AN AUTHOR If you have one/are pursuing one, that's AWEsome! But you don't NEED one
The best part of all this is she hasn't gone private and is actively engaging, which tells me this was, 100%, a stunt (steeped in raci$m) for clout. I dunno whether to get out the popcorn, or burn so much sage she poofs into thin air
Does anyone else remember recording songs off the radio? I tried explaining it to the kiddo and lost him. Pretty sure my mom still has my old boom box, so I'll try a demo when we go home this summer 🤣🤣
So, if any of the following has happened for you in the last 2 years, I need you to pop the bubbly and shout it out:
1. Had a partial request (YOU LUCKY DUCK!)
2. Had a full request (WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?!)
3. Received feedback with a rejection (OMG THEY LOVE YOU AND YOUR BOOK!)
The toxic culture of "pushing through."
They say you need to distract yourself by writing a new book. KEEP WRITING, they yell. Well, I'm here to tell you to stop. Don't. Unless it gives you joy, feel free to take a damn break! You deserve one. You need time to grieve and heal.

is this Thursday, Sep 3rd, so here are a few pointers:
1. Schedule your tweets, especially if you're not in the EST/EDT time zone
2. Post your best pitch first thing
3. Pin your best pitch to your timeline
4. Hydrate
5. Have fun
I have been very slowly unfollowing ppl who have never even said hi to me. This has done WONDERS for not only my insane TL, but my mental health. It's been a painstaking process, but if you feel I made an error in unfollowing you, please drop a comment below

It is extremely important that adults actually BUY books, especially MG, or publishers will stop buying them altogether. Kidlit is standing at the precipice, & it doesn't matter if you read it or not. Gift the books to the kids in your life✌️✌️
Read books. Plot books. Study craft. That one thing you struggle with? Work on it🤷♀️Publishing will still be there. Pick up a new hobby. Find joy.
DO NOT PUSH THROUGH. You're hanging on by a thread, my friend. I know, because I am too.
Ever read a book so gorgeous you're just about ready to throw away almost 20 years of writing because you'll never, ever word like that? What even ARE words? What the hell am I doing?
Wait, wtf is happening? A 2024 debut made GR burner accounts and 1-starred all their peers? Is that what's going on???
Someone please tell me I'm reading all these tweets incorrectly, because my jaw is unhinged rn

I'm 6ft tall, and rule my corp job with an iron fist. I've been called all kinds of horrible things by insecure men (never women), and I think it's because they don't know where they fit in this new world. They were never taught. As a mom, I guarantee my son will turn out better
"Just self publish if you're sick of waiting."
Don't you DARE! Self publishing is NOT a solution if you're not prepared to run a business. Self publishing is HARD OMG! You need capital and marketing strategies and distribution and a good head on your shoulders.
When hugely successful authors complain on main about all the rejections they received, and it's 1/10th of what's "normal," a little piece of my soul withers to nothing.
Anyway, I received over 1000 rejections before getting my yes, so hang in there everyone

We experienced the worst kind of family tragedy this weekend, and I still can't wrap my head around it. But I wanted to just come on here to remind you to check in on your children and their mental health.
I've been at this for 18 years.
2.3 million words written.
6 completed manuscripts.
And you know what keeps me going? What keeps me motivated in the face of rejection?
Wine.
And the unending belief that I CAN DO IT!
And so can you

Well, here it is, folks. It's long as hell because it took 21 years, but I tried to stick to the main plot. HOW I GOT MY AGENT is live...and writing it was more emotional than I expected. Anyway, enjoy!

What do I mean by "rejections that feel unreasonable?" Rejections based on elements in the mss that could easily be fixed. This speaks to the workload, & how they're not taking on anything that either requires a lot of work OR that they don't LOVE, love. Sound familiar, queriers?
For writers using A/I, I have bad news...nothing you output is eligible for copyright.
Using it for fast drafting? Okay, I could maybe see that. But you will have to literally rewrite every last word of plagiarized output so...you're doing double work. Anyway, shame on the RWA
One such industry is publishing. So how is that affecting querying? **Rolls up sleeves** Let's start with an observation. This is a personal opinion: Publishing has never invested in kidlit. There, someone had to say it.
Just saying: If American writers have written a folklore/mythology & publishing feels it's now "done to death"...I guarantee you there are authors from those cultures/countries who want to tell their mythology folklore through their own lens, and those stories aren't "saturated."
Well. Nothing like a frantic call from home (at 1am home time) with terrible news to make you feel completely useless. My only sibling, an ocean away, needs prayers guys. And I need a very strong drink. Hug your loved ones. Now.
That's literally a massive win (especially feedback...that's unicorn-level stuff these days). SO WHAT CAN AUTHORS DO?
Write a good book, and have a great sub package. That's all you can control.
And now it's time to talk about the elephant in the room.
If there's a writer in your life, avoid the following questions/statements:
1. So, why aren't you published?
2. But when do I get to, like, buy it?
3. You're going to turn into a cup of coffee...
4. It's just grammar.
5. Why are you crying?

#ontheporch
Let's start with the following: The reason it feels like querying and pitch contests are "dead" is NOT "because writers aren't writing good books right now." If anything, competition is fiercer than ever because you are all so damn talented
#writingcommunity
THAT'S why this year has been HELL on querying authors (& debuts on sub...we don't talk about that on main, but sub is querying with higher stakes). That's why so many agents closed to queries for chunks of the year. No point staying open if there's no point sending things on sub
From salaries, hiring practices, and most importantly, diversity, publishing has always used the profits from its kidlit imprints to fuel massive adult advances, and neglects to cultivate its bottom line through investment🤷♀️😱😬**I can already see the pitchforks**
You can only query one mss at a time, and I personally know writers who have "written through the wait" and now have multiple books ready to query (that's how long the wait has BEEN). So, give yourself some space. Publishing is slower than ever.
Some of you feel there's a ticking clock when it comes to publishing. There isn't. I went 21 years before landing an agent. It's OK. Publishing will wait for you. If writing is giving you anxiety, take a break. If your brain is fried/you're burned-out from querying, take a break!
Her entire feed is now "I'm not racist, I once interacted with a Black person once in 1993." Literally listing everyone she's ever talked to lol. ANYWAY, support BIPOC authors and artists. Preorder, leave reviews/ratings when you've read their work, & never be Lauren:
If you want to self publish, and are prepared to either succeed or fail, and you have a business plan, go for it. But kidlit generally doesn't do well in that space. You need to be available in stores, you need to get on librarian lists.
😭😭😭😭 I did it. I rewrote the book of my heart. I still have another round before it's ready to go, but I never thought I'd be able to look at this mss ever again. I was wrong...and Dee is BACK!
#amwriting
#YA
These past 2 years have been hell, and writing through the wait is no longer a viable piece of advice. Hell, go on strike! VIVA LA REVOLUTION! Why am I saying this?
People are wondering why I don't thread about querying any more, and that's because it's the wild west out there right now. All you can do is make sure your sub package is 100% impactful and shiny...then sage your computer before sending out. It's the same for sub. Stay hydrated!
Some of you may have noticed a change to the display name on my profile. That's my name (pre-marriage, pre-immigration). That's my name 'as Gaeilge'. English is the language of our colonizers. So. This is me. Maw-rih-ha Nick Alas-toe-ihr.
It's math. If an editor acquires 3 debuts a year, and a single agent signs, say, 10 debut authors (about avg), then 7 of them will "die on sub." No one wants that, not authors, not agents, not editors. Your books MATTER. They are beautiful and joyful and the world needs them.
I woke to the sound of my 7 year old scream-laughing at 6am. What was he doing, you ask? Reading. My neurodivergent 7 yo decided--all by himself--to read a graphic novel, and my heart is full.

Oh my God😭😭😭 RIP Anne Rice. Your stories birthed a whole generation of storytellers, and inspired this humble writer to fall in love with the supernatural. You will live on in our hearts.
Since most publishing internships require applicants to be a "recent" college grad, I'm putting the following out into the universe for 2024.
💫I would like to be an agent💫
14 years of editorial experience, 20 years of sales and marketing experience, a lifetime of books
#2024
This isn't on anyone who left, it's on the hiring boards, and those making the decisions. They made the conscious choice not to change practices/hire replacements. Authors on submission have noted the following:
1. Slow AF response times
2. Rejections that feel unreasonable
So, what's happening? Kidlit publishing professionals started leaving the industry in droves in 2019, not 2020. Fed up with low salaries, ridiculous workloads, and the lack of diversity/change each individual hoped they could achieve, they were forced to leave.
NONE OF US have ever experienced a pandemic, and neither have our parents. A pandemic is the WOLRDWIDE spread of an infectious disease, and the world hasn't experienced anything like it since the 1918 flu. We've been through epidemics, NOT pandemics.
Disclaimer: This is an observation within the kidlit community. Adult still looks healthy.
I'm not saying anyone with an agent is spaghetti. Landing an agent is hard AF. What I AM saying is that if editors aren't acquiring at the rate they used to, then neither can agents.
Dear Santa,
This year...I'm gonna ask for an agent for every member of the

But even if you can't make that happen, I think we'd all appreciate a sprinkle of magic dust for 2020.

This is a public service announcement for all newb writers:

🕷LITERARY AGENTS GET PAID WHEN YOU GET PAID

What does that have to do with anything? It means the world ground to a halt, and we're all going to have some form of PTSD. It also means businesses didn't know what to do, and they all implemented emergency plans that, in hindsight, weren't very wise.
My child just yelled "COUGH BACKWARDS" when he died in a video game...and it took me a full 5 minutes to figure out what he meant.
I'll wait, as you all decipher
This entire thread has been one writerly aunt's opinion, and I hope its given some people peace. I also know its left some of you feeling worse, but I'm an advocate for transparency--always have been. And I will always be open and honest with you.
I suppose there's no time like the present to explain the little flag in my bio. I've only told those closest to me, but it's

so, eff it. I'm an Ace woman who only figured out who she was about 12 months ago. To all my

Any 'editor' who claims developmental editing isn't needed/important is not a fiction editor.
Any 'editor' who negs potential clients saying 'self-pub books are garbage unless you hire me' is a bullying, narcistic a$$h0le.

I thought I couldn't do it. These last months have been so turbulent & strange, but here it is, folks. My MG Fantasy--if Stranger Things starred vampires, and a 12 yo took on the government.

Can't wait to start editing!! Complete mss num 7 in the bag
It's also the reason there's this feeling that "pitch contests are dead." They're not. The "cropping up" (to quote THAT video) of small pitch contests has actually created more opportunity for authors to be seen. These contests focus on diversity, marginalization, and genre.
...the higher-ups made the conscious decision NOT to hire replacements. Imagine your own workplace. Now imagine 2, 3, or 4 people left due to MH, shady HR practices, microaggressions, and general burnout. NOW envision the following: the bosses decided not to replace those ppl.
I don't know about you all, but not once--even during multiple breakdowns, bad meds, and neurodivergency--have I ever even THOUGHT about executing a targeted, jealous, racist campaign to destroy my peers. The amount of spoons any one of those things would take is astronomical???
You guys. Some crazy lady just rolled up on my neighbors house, got out of the car, and tried to break down the door. She's screaming: COME OUT WHORE, and I'm all...
Hi all. Buying books to support authors, even if you won't read them, isn't pity. Authors depend on pre-orders. They're used as a tempera check by publishers to see if it's worth throwing marketing at the book/whether they'll consider buying the sequel. So, support away!
Just a friendly reminder: I was never chosen. I had like 2 requests from contests over the years (6 years-worth of Twitter contests) that never amounted to anything. It didn't stop me from landing an agent. Mainly because...it's just one opportunity
#RevPit
This means they had to adopt "orphaned authors"--authors whose editors left the industry--and take on their colleagues' lists. It also means that acquisitions of debut authors slowed, because in order to foster the talent already contracted, they HAD to refocus their priorities.
THEY ARE NEEDED! And they allow agents searching for particular genres/wanting to champion diverse voices to wade through a smaller pool of pitches with what little spoons they have left (everyone's suffering mentally). Agents are stressed. With pubs slowing acquisitions...
And the subtweets have started. No one said adult is easier. No one said switch to adult. I made it very clear I was talking about kidlit, because that's the arena I'm currently subbing in. I can not speak about adult, as that's not the space I'm in. We're all upset together xxx
I'm just an author and editor, what do I know? Well, I'm not speaking from a place of emotion, folks. Before I was able to edit full-time, and before I dared call myself an author, I ran multi-million dollar business. I know a thing or two about bottom lines, and corporations.
How to get trad published:
1. Finish your mss
2. Edit within an inch of your sanity
3. Rewrite
4. Repeat step 2
5. Repeat step 3
6. Send to CPs, repeat # 2, 100 times, then query.
7. Fail. Yes, fail. Failure is the only way to improve.
8. Rinse and repeat all steps
