@TimothyBoland1 Short answer is no. These buildings have no water & yet 97% have police and/or fire call. That is irresponsible. What this requires is a maintenance plan to prevent that from happening. Fines are only a resort if there is no compliance

Vacant property ordinance to be reviewed tomorrow. 97.1% of these vacant properties had at least 1 police and/or fire incident including one over the weekend where a vacant building w/o water had a fire.

@ElmwoodOtto This is separate of a VBML program and builds on it. VBML covers ~3k of the ~5K. This was designed with the admin to give them a tool for the other ~2k. Of those ~2k, 83% had fire runs; 72% had at least one police run; they are unsafe. Other tools will certainly be needed.

A maintenance plan: written plan for maintaining building in compliance w/code includes timeline for rehabilitating and reoccupying or demolishing the building. In other words, there's a plan for not being a public safety hazard & burden to public including city $. 3/3

The reason that abandoned properties are the source of more injuries in fires for firefighters is that they are neglected. That's why we need the vacant property ordinance that I'm introducing, which will be discussed next week in Council to protect public safety & neighborhoods
