Underrespected is that 2016 run by Murray to get to World No. 1.
Not sure how many of y’all were fans back then but he was unequivocally the best player in the world at that point - and it ultimately cost him his body.
Weeks at world No.1:
Djokovic - 428
Federer - 310
Nadal - 209
Murray - 41
Total - 988
988 weeks is exactly 19 years.
The Big Four held the
#1
spot for 19 YEARS COMBINED.
Funny moment w/ Sakkari and the ump.
Tells her that Begu's coach is telling her where to serve every time (which is allowed by the new coaching rules).
Ump with the counterpoint: If you can hear where the serve is going then that helps you too.
Sakkari agrees and laughs. 😂
Double match point for Félix Auger-Aliassime: Andy Murray’s hat falls off mid point and he stops play; FAA doesn’t notice, wins the point, but agrees to replay the point when Murray explains the situation.
Massive show of sportsmanship there. Classy as always.
I hope we can all look back on this in 12 months and truly just laugh how all of tennis twitter stayed up to watch the Prime Minister of Australia give a standard update about the pandemic and nothing more.
Sure, 19-year-old red-head Italian Jannik Sinner is great at tennis, but as soon as you realize he’s ALSO sponsored by parmesan cheese, you simply have no choice but to stan.
@janniksin
Imagine if he had… just got vaccinated? Today’s circus is the logical end point of the nonsense he’s put tennis, tennis media & his fans, who genuinely have my sympathies, through.
I think it’s time we all stop kidding ourselves and admit that Ostapenko’s kit is, at just one week in, the best we’re going see in 2024 from any apparel brand.
To the surprise of absolutely nobody,
@ashbarty
is absolutely sensational in the commentary booth. Hope we get as much of it as we can in the coming years, especially as her contemporaries continue their careers on court.
Thoughts and prayers to the Miami Open ticketing team who have to explain to their day session attendees that not one but two retirements actually both count as completed matches and they’re not eligible for refunds.
I’m **finally** going to my first Grand Slam. 🙏
Roland-Garros tickets booked for the middle weekend - real ones know this is the best part of a Slam.
Guess I’ve got to brush up on my Parisian French (booing for no good reason).
Say what you want about the Berdych/Ferrer/Nishikori/Raonic/Cilic era of secondary Top 10’ers, but they certainly knew how to make it out of the first two rounds of Grand Slam.
Mary Carillo and Lindsay Davenport have spent - and I kid you not - the entire duration of this Swiatek-Pegula match finding things to criticize about World No. 1 Swiatek.
Her racquets. Her mentality. Her form. Her fitness.
Just baffling commentary.
Milos Raonic knows what's up.
Excellent answer from his press conference last night on what sort of work needs to be done by tennis players to contribute to the movement.
Hats off to the
@AustralianOpen
content team for uploading both regular and extended highlights of almost every singles match on their YouTube channels. Huge for value add for fans.
(And hats off to the marketing team for monetizing the crap out of each vid! 💸)
Naomi Osaka will be on the Ellen Show. Episode airs tomorrow Wednesday Sept 12. Check your local listings for channel and time. And she got to meet the other guests LeBron James and Channing Tatum! Lucky girl! 😍❤️
One of my biggest tennis commentator pet peeves is when they focus on all the reasons the players are losing points rather the reason they’re winning them - especially in women’s matches.
It’s a subtle but grating way of making the whole match feel negative.
Also all credit to No. 1 Barty for not playing for an entire year, having her No. 1 questioned, ultimately not caring about the No. 1, and then coming back and playing like No. 1.
Sounds like a proper No. 1.
Barty has beaten Ostapenko, Azarenka, Sabalenka and now Svitolina to return to her second straight
#MiamiOpen
final. Really impressive stuff, especially given her early H2H record against Svitolina
Also an Osaka vs. Swiatek Miami Open final (their first meeting since their excellent Toronto clash in 2019) would really be the *perfect* way to segue into the post-Barty era of the WTA.
🤞
As some of you already know, today is my last day with

It's been an absolute privilege to have been able to work with excellent colleagues (now friends), brilliant freelancers (also now friends) and of course our golden generation of 🇨🇦 players.
Very interesting. Ump Julie Kjendlie asks Sabalenka if she’s alright (injured?) at the changeover due to the catastrophic struggles with her serve.
Sabalenka: “Nothing is wrong. It’s a technical problem."
Super thrilled to announce that today I joined the
@TennisCanada
digital team as social media coordinator!
Started volunteering five years ago, finally made it in. 🇨🇦🎾✌🏻
One of my proudest moments working in tennis was organizing the first “visible” Pride Day in Toronto in 2019.
Had a ball kid come to our office asking for a 2nd rainbow wrist band that he could have for his boyfriend, said he was so excited the tournament was finally doing this.
It’s place in the calendar could definitely use an adjustment, but no doubt the Guadalajara Open has proven it deserves to stay as a tour stop for the WTA.
You literally couldn’t imagine a more dismal entry list for a 1000 event and yet the stands have been packed every day.
Andreescu is probably playing her highest quality tennis of her season... and is somehow still down 6-3, 2-0 to Swiatek.
And *that* is how good the WTA's World No. 1 is.
@Jays_Fan2
13 finals, 9 titles in 17 tournaments played – including Wimbledon, two Grand Slam finals, three Masters 1000s and an additional two finals, Olympic gold, ATP Finals?
Idk about you but that's No. 1 stuff to me.
Muguruza: Wins Roland-Garros 2016, doesn’t defend in 2017 but wins Wimbledon a month later.
Halep: Wins Roland-Garros 2018, doesn’t defend in 2019 but wins Wimbledon a month later.
Barty: Wins Roland-Garros 2019, doesn’t defend in 2020 but – ?
So run me through this.
ATP Cup, supposing it’s a roaring success, is going to be an annual team competition forever featuring all the top tennis countries in the world…
…but will always be held in Australia with Team Australia always getting the home advantage?
A healthy reminder that Félix Auger-Aliassime is just 20 years old.
Younger than the likes of Shapovalov, Korda, Davidovich Fokina; the only player younger in the Top 50 is Jannik Sinner.
Competing well in his first Slam quarter-final at

Is anyone else tired of seeing players on their death beds, sweating every last millilitre of fluid out of their body while they battle conditions more than their opponents?
When FEDERER of all people just wants a match to be over, you know it’s bad.

Cold take: Victoria Azarenka is very good at mixed doubles.
Mild take: Victoria Azarenka has the best return in women's tennis.
Hot take: Victoria Azarenka can still win Grand Slams.

Remember when Daria Kasatkina came out as bi this year during an absolutely *iconic* Russian interview and it was so casual and cool that no one really made a big fuss about it?
Respect on the name. ✊🏳️🌈
I think Swiatek might truly have one of the most fun game styles right now in women’s tennis?
Still putting all the pieces together, but she’s already this good which is… scary.
Last for Slam results have been 4R, 4R, 1R, QF.
Progressing nicely at the highest levels with a very steady trajectory – with lots to improve still too.
Future is bright.

I stand by my opinion that the best-of-five format at Slams for men is the primary reason that the men’s tour/rankings/stars are more consistent than the women’s.
Wait — the Pickleball World No. 1 who has barely lost a match in her entire career… lost (and reacted like this) to tennis player & “Pickleball enthusiast” Hurricane Tyra Black?
💀
This Sinner-Alcaraz match-up is like when Djokovic is redlining against Nadal who himself is also redlining.
For the entire match.
Matches like tonight's at the
#USOpen
makes me think we'll be *perfectly* fine in a post-Big 3 era.
Umpire at the Azarenka-Kasatkina match corrects himself after a (minor) mistaken call, says "my mistake."
Azarenka looks at him deadpan and says, "that's a warning."
😂
Let’s also not pretend that Bo5 is the reason ATP results at Slams (and therefore rankings) seem “more consistent” than the WTA.
Those convos are always coded as upsets somehow reflecting quality of either tour - but it really just boils down to the score format they play.
As some of you already may know, today is my last day doing social/digital for

It’s been a wild ride starting my career in my dream field and I’ve met soooo many amazing people in the industry that have enriched my life one way or another.
Iga Swiatek has somehow found a level even higher than at any point in 2022? Absolutely dominating World No. 4 Jessica Pegula, up 6-3, 4-0 in the Qatar final... and Pegula isn't even playing that poorly.
Looking untouchable.
