So many people have better stories, but I always had a great appreciation for how engaged
@andy_murray
was with players at the Challenger level. He was watching streams, sending notes to those guys. Class.
Chris has worked so, so hard for a long time to get to this moment. He is so passionate about this sport, and to achieve this goal is monumental. Chris, it means the world to me that I got to be here to see it in person. More big goals and achievements ahead.
The loveliest two minutes you'll see today ❤️
The moment
@chris_eubanks96
reached his maiden Masters 1000 R16 - AND realized he's now a top 100 player...
#MiamiOpen
A quick self indulgent post.
5 years of work has gotten me an opportunity to work here at my home slam. Part of the
@usopen
radio team, & a possible callup to TV. Lots of hours, powerful stories, and now... an incredible reward. Tx to the players for the support and wisdom
As I sit on this plane back to the states, it’s remarkable to think about the respective journeys for
@TommyPaul1
and
@BenShelton
. One took years to figure out an identity as a pro. One took off like a rocket. No path is identical, no journey is linear. Good luck, boys. Enjoy!
I'm pretty overwhelmed by this, and it's hard for me to thank everyone properly. This is the job I've wanted to do since I was a kid. And I've done it for 10 years.
@chris_eubanks96
,
@Noahrubin33
,
@tennisgalarneau
, and so many more...thank you for inviting me in to your lives.
I’ve seen first-hand the hours that you put into your craft. Thank you so much for all that you do to help elevate and showcase the players in our sport. You’re a legend
@MikeCTennis
❤️
I’ve worked for 20 years in broadcasting. And finally this little break happened. A last minute cancellation lead to a Tuesday morning phone call which brings me to what I said was my goal when I was in college: I…
Just a development reminder re:
@SebiKorda
. Post aus open jr title, he and his team turned down wild cards to atp events, deciding that growth and development, I.e. futures and then challengers were the way to go. They thought it would be a better route than going big early
Nike just has to find a way to get more options. To throw Halep and Keys out there in the exact same kit for this type of event... two big, marketable stars. Has to be better.
I have no idea whether it’s coming through on the courtside mics, but there is one ball kid who is done for the night who is cheering loudly for Meddy from the upper deck, and I love it and him so much for bringing it tonight.
Dear
@australianopen
,
Please make sure
@MikeCTennis
is on the call for atleast one of those All American 3rd matches. You will not find any commentary who knows these guys better than him.
Sincerely,
Tennis Fans
My life has been marred with bouts of depression, and it never goes away. I've learned to cope better, and have an amazing support structure. On this
#WorldMentalHealthDay
, a reminder to use compassion and kindness as your guide, and be unafraid to seek help if you need it.
Started this journey eight years ago, and today, I get to broadcast my first grand slam singles final. Pretty humbling, exciting, and overwhelming. Ready to get after it. @ US Open Tennis Championships
This year, on our Center Courts on the
@usta
Pro Circuit, we've broadcast roughly 536 matches, with 804 hours of tennis.
It's free, it's been ridiculously fun, and we greatly appreciate you coming along for the ride.
You guys, this is also such a big moment for
@BlairHenley
who has worked her ASS off to be here. For her to introduce the Original 9 is so fitting. She's a legend.
I've said it before, but the time Gimelstob made a 70 year old ballwoman cry at the Champaign Challenger remains the worst thing I've ever seen in person.
I've suffered from depression at periods of my life for nearly 30 years. There's not something that magically protects someone. Not money. Not success. Not relationships.
I’d heard rumors that Kev was retiring a couple of weeks ago, but didn’t want to believe it. What a career. Kevin Anderson is a consummate professional, dedicated husband and dad, and had an incredibly successful career. Congrats
@KAndersonATP
and
@KelseyOAnderson
I know this won't get a lot of attention considering the timing, but
@RifficeSam
just reached his first Challenger semifinal, hasn't lost a set all week, hasn't lost a match in 50+ days...
And then went and and picked up all the balls off the court so the staff didn't have to.
As we head in to Savannah today, a reminder that the legend herself
@BlairHenley
is about to kill it in her first week of commentary. I’m just so excited for her and can’t wait to see this path of her career flourish.
'All these people from so many different parts of my life reaching out, saying I deserve this - it just shows that what I've tried to do over the years does mean something to a lot of people'
@chris_eubanks96
: One of the best stories in all of sports right now ❤️
#MiamiOpen
Liam, I was at your first Challenger win in Napa, & your first final two months later. Top 💯 was never in doubt. 😁
Your impact on the tennis community is large, no matter your ranking. Congrats on this incredible accomplishment.
Here’s you playing Pokémon go.
@Liambroady
This kid just won another title. Three weeks after this was taken, he hit a career high. Six years ago. And has been through a hell of a lot since. 6-2, 6-3 today over Vukic.
Reminder for everyone watching Montreal and Toronto this coming week, there are some damned good challengers and ITFs as well. Chicago's field is massive, as is Concord. US Open preps take many forms.
When she said this, I just looked at
@BlairHenley
and I’m pretty sure she could tell through my mask that my jaw dropped at this answer. This is everything.
History and context make these athletes' stories more compelling and accessible. Happy to be able to tell these stories as Kozlov and others bring their games to higher levels.
So fitting that
@MikeCTennis
did this interview for
@TennisTV
. He’s had a front row seat for much of Stefan’s winding journey via the
@ATPChallenger
Tour. Full circle in more ways than one. 👏
This has really been sticking with me over the last couple of hours. Michael Mmoh last year too. Guys stepped forward, waited to apologize to the person they'd injured, accepted their blame. Adulting.
Just remember that Denis Shapovalov was 17 when he hit the umpire with a ball, apologised profusely, took full responsibility, didn’t argue when he was defaulted and attended the press conference afterwards to say it was his fault and he was sorry. He was 17. Novak is 33.
Told me he was going to serve and volley every first serve, because he has to incorporate it in to his game. Stuck with it, even in deficit situations. Bold stuff.
It’s been a challenging couple of days here at home, after an emergency overnight surgery Friday. Thankful to be home and recovering although I’m going to be a bit hobbled for the next month. Hope everyone will be patient with me in Orlando and Tallahassee!
Had a blast (per usual) at my 6th
@AustralianOpen
. Can’t express how much fun it is to start the year with such a positive experience, and with colleagues who love what they do. Until next year!
I want to again thank
@TennisChannel
for putting the
@usta
Pro Circuit on the main channel. Makes a huge, huge impact on these tournaments, as well as gives exposure to these fantastically talented players.
Tsitsitpas is warming up today with Jarmere Jenkins, Serena's hitting partner, a guy I really wish would come back on tour, and an incredibly good human being.
Have to say…getting to interview
@RajeevRam
after this title, 20 years after first meeting him as a skinny, lanky incoming freshman
@IlliniMTennis
, is one of the highlights of my career personally.
BEN SHELTON 🏆🏆🏆
The 20-year-old becomes the youngest player in
#ATPChallenger
history to win 3 titles in 3 weeks after beating Vukic 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Champaign!
@IlliniProTennis
|
@usta
Congratulations to
@stefankozlov
, a well earned
@AustralianOpen
main draw Wild Card, earning the USTA's reciprocal after today's 6-2, 6-3 victory over JJ Wolf.
People often ask me why I enjoy my job so much, and this is why. These matches mean SO MUCH for players, and on a weekly basis. It's such an honor to get to watch and broadcast Challenger tennis.
Loses an absolute battle 7-6 in the third during a 3-3 match. 15 minutes later he is on the court practicing and getting better. What a beast
@ZekeClark
Challenger fans were pretty lucky the last few years getting to see this guy get healthy, get matches, and get back to this mental state. Never a doubt,
@TKokkinakis
. Well done.
So I miss my connection at Dfw. And I’m walking to get it fixed, And out of nowhere, there’s my aunt and uncle who I haven’t seen in two years. They were flying back after moving my cousin to Tucson. I got to spend 2 hours waiting with them for their flight.
#Blessings
Today was the first time I’d been home for my birthday since 2012. Small blessings, right? First time I’ve spent a birthday with my daughter. Ever. We spent the day eating cupcakes, watching movies, and listening to her fave, Taylor swift. Couldn’t ask for anything more.
I’d heard a rumor earlier in the day that
@marcos_giron93
was inspired by
@CasperRuud98
, and was going to draw a moose. Kudos on the art work, and not getting tight and backing out 😂
Wanted to say another couple words about Millman. Showed up today with a slew of notes, and knew exactly where they were and what to bring up at key points. Extremely in tune with the match and what to expect. He’s a future all star in this field.
If I did this, I wouldn't have a job. McEnroe can get away with it because of his credentials. Shame he continues to show a lack of respect for the sport and its players who aren't top 20.
This week on the pod, Mary Carillo joins us to talk about this decision, and much more. Dropping Tuesday morning. I can say this talk has left me incredibly inspired in many, many different ways.
@BehindTRacquet
@Noahrubin33
Also in
#LaverCup
news, Mary Carillo resigned from her Laver Cup role earlier this week due to their handling of Zverev and accusations against him.
Carillo: “In the end I just felt like I’d be complicit in the whitewashing of very serious allegations. I couldn’t be part of it.”
Today's chair umpire is Greg Allensworth. Greg and I both started doing USTA Pro Circuit Challengers in our two roles at about the same time in 2013, and it's really cool that we both are doing our first men's final at the same time.
Tennis is sometimes suffering. One of the messages from
@tarodaniel93
, our guest on the Coffee Cast this week.
New episode is out!!!
Find it at , or on itunes at:
Thanks to everyone for watching the
@keinishikori
match. As a reminder, this wasn't a special occasion. We do this all the time. It's kinda fun!
#USTAProCircuit
“The start of 2017 was a great time in my life. I won a couple of 25k events, did well at Fed Cup and qualified for Wimbledon just after turning 17...”
Just a reminder that these guys that spend a good part of their careers outside the top 100 and on the challenger tour.... are damn good players.
Oscar Otte
A lot of game and a fun watch.
Personal note, just want to thank all the players that reached out yesterday to see if I needed anything. We're ultimately a bit of a traveling family, so it's nice to feel loved in those darker moments.
Hey everyone- I'm going to do my best to take the next 11 days off from social media, to reset my brain as best I can before the US elections. Really excited that there will be some Challengers to commentate right afterward too. Remember, be kind to yourself, to others, & vote!
I sure as hell hope Grigor recovers, but it just goes to show that we, as a whole, cannot flaunt guidelines without consequences. No matter where you are.
This is horrible for Grigor, and globally, for our sport.
About what I expected, and just a really fun 2 and a half sets. The kid is legitimately for real.
And for God's sake, folks, as my friend Jimmy says, Watch Challengers, folks.
CATCH A RISING STAR.
I got to do something today for the first time in 205 days. Something I love deeply. I was far from perfect. I was far from comfortable. But I was truly appreciative, and thankful for this moment. I don’t take it for granted and know I’m very, very lucky today.
In 2014, I was in my first year as a tennis broadcaster, and
@NickMcCarvel
was the press aide
@TallyChallenger
. Today we got to call a match together
@AustralianOpen
. It was, unsurprisingly, so much fun.
A week ago, calling some huge matches to an international audience. Today? Sick child, and it’s hailing outside. Life comes at you pretty fast
(Wouldn’t trade it for anything)
The best job I'll ever have in my life. It's such an honor to do it, no matter the hours. But I absolutely mean it when I say, the interactions I get to have with tennis twitter make the days easy. Truly. Thank you.
Christopher Eubanks officially clinches 2nd place in the USTA AO WC challenge with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Evan Zhu. That means he'll get the wild card if Ben Shelton earns direct entry via his ranking.
Coco also expressed how she completely understands the restrictions for AO players given all the sacrifices Australians made the past several months.
"We didn't do the work," Gauff said when referring to the U.S. after seeing people outside her hotel walking without masks.
@chris_eubanks96
@Noahrubin33
@tennisgalarneau
I'm hopeful that I can do this job ten more years.
I tried to do a rough estimate:
Over the last ten years, approximately 125 Challengers (thanks covid!)
Average of 30 matches per week
3750 Challenger matches
Plus now
5 AOs
7 US Opens (2 singles finals!)
and 8 Masters.
