I have worn this every day since I bought it in 2018. This symbol has provided more comfort & eased more anxieties than I can recount. Your post is political. This watch band is personal; a powerful tool to connect with some of my most marginalized patients. Go find another hill.

The pride flag, on a lanyard, for instance, is experienced as a political declaration by patients. It does not belong in a professional, ethical doctor-patient relationship. The patients, who are often hurting, terrified and anxious, should not have to deal also with our
I am very proud to share that I have accepted a position at the University of Tennessee Knoxville as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology as a Hepatobiliary & Pancreas Surgeon! I can’t wait to join this incredible

group! 🧡🤍
I spent the first 18 years of my life deciding what I wanted to do in this world. I spent the next 18 becoming a surgeon. I am so proud to **finally** start my career as a staff surgeon at
@UTKnoxSurgery
with an extraordinary group & amazing people

I’ve been eyeing this robotics platform by Vicarius Surgical for a long time and I am vi-curious to see what it can do. I like that the engineers/designers solved the surgical robotics problem in a different way. I wonder how strong it is and does it scale
I am not a trauma surgeon, yet in my surgery residency I operated on more gunshot wounds than I can remember. I repaired livers, removed segments of bowel, removed shattered kidneys and spleens, and put in chest tubes. Enough is enough.

My last two years at
@StanfordSurgery
as the

fellow have been unbelievably special. As Program Director,
@BVisserMD
has been my strongest advocate and

and I am so thankful for his unwavering support.
Somehow so many people STILL need to hear this:

WOMEN ARE SURGEONS
DO NOT IGNORE CLEARLY DISPLAYED TITLES
DO NOT ASSUME ROLES

- Trust the scan, have a plan - should be few surprises with high quality CT
- Skeletonize lat SMA in all cases, retract vein for exposure
One of my favorite things to see in the OR is when one of our fantastic sub-i’s gets into the hot seat for the very first time. Every sub-i who rotates through the
@StanfordSurgery
HPB service gets this experience—a first step on their path towards becoming skilled surgeons 🎣
Bags packed and out the door! All the feels as I finish up the ride of a lifetime. Off to my next adventure—thank you

for everything!
Thinking back to my surgery intern orientation & one talk sticks out. One of the 3rd years was supposed to teach us how to respond to overnight pages but instead just told us story after story of mistakes he made. At the end we all felt a lot better. You’re all going to do great!
It’s hard to believe today was my last day operating with
@BVisserMD
. I learned more than I ever thought possible and this fellowship exceeded my (typically unrealistically high) expectations in every way. Thank you.
I love my job. One of my favorite parts is seeing medical students, especially those who may not have considered surgery, find their passion in what we do. Mentors like
@MonicaDuaMD
inspire rockstar sub-I’s like Aviva Mattingly at
@StanfordSurgery
- she will be a great surgeon!
For New Interns:
The 3 enemies of a Wound VAC:
1) Wetness - won’t stick
2) Wrinkles - will leak
3) Where’s the machine? - you need to have the suction device on and ready as soon as you apply the sponge/film
Your overnight colleagues (and seniors) will thank you.
It’s the last week of my liver transplant elective at Cedars-Sinai and the pilot took this incredible time lapse on the flight back from our procurement in San Diego.
Thank you to the amazing liver team at

Robotic Blumgart Anastomosis: A Familiar Pancreaticojejunostomy - technical how we do it video.
Today one of my OR nurses gave me this pin as a gift. I have to admit, as a new surgeon from California, it was scary moving to Knoxville with my husband. I wasn’t sure we’d fit in. But I started saying What Would Dolly Do? Inspired by the impact she’s had on this region ✨
Very proud to be selected as the recipient of the

Woke up early to finish a talk I’m giving today on pancreatitis. Spent an unusual amount of time looking through pancreatitis cartoons. This was my favorite.
It’s crazy to think how much I’ve learned in the last 2 years as the
#HPB
Fellow at
@StanfordSurgery
. I will miss these OR moments with
@MonicaDuaMD
, but I am so proud of the surgeon she has helped me become ✨
Very proud to share that I was elected to join the

Chapter of the

. Thank you to the membership for the nomination and to the patients for the honor of being your surgeon. Beaming with pride!
One of the things I love most about surgery is the team—there’s nothing better than a great team. I am so proud of what we accomplished this month & can confidently say we each grew as clinicians!

In a left hepatic trisegmentectomy, it is possible that the dominant drainage of the right posterior sector is from a short hepatic rather than the right hepatic vein. A limited left-to-right caval dissection preserves outflow. In this case all three hepatic veins were taken.
@BLobitz
Burnout is real, and I’m sorry this is where you’re at in life, but it’s no excuse to heartlessly come for a grieving resident (twice). And if the surgeons are telling you you’re being cruel, I don’t know, maybe set the phone down?
I couldn’t have asked for a better sub-I to finish off my decade of training!
@mary_moyamendez
did such a great job this month and any program (even
@DukeSurgery
) would be VERY lucky to have her! You will be a GREAT Surgeon!
A urologist is upset he has to wait for a general surgery colleague to finish an extremely difficult call case before he can start his own, so he disparages their decision-making and surgical skill on Twitter.
Really lame, dude. Be better.
General surgeons: what is the purpose of the add on robotic cholecystectomy? Isn’t it a procedure that has essentially been perfected w pure lap at a fraction of the time & cost?
I write this on a Sunday waiting 4 hours a robotic chole to be finished- historical 45 min lap case
In fellowship you spend so much time with your mentor that sometimes you even start dressing the same… It was incredible catching up with

Everyone loves the talented

Do you feed your pancreatitis patients immediately upon presentation? If not, why?
Contrary to outdated beliefs, there is no benefit to letting the pancreas “rest” by holding enteral feeds (eating). It was thought that early feeds would increase pain when the opposite is true!

In honor of National Coming Out Day, I will share an OR anecdote 🌈✨
Resident: Be right back, going to go grab my loupes from the OR.

Resident: Sure, which ones are yours?
Me: You’ll know.
Can’t believe it’s already

Today I’m on the other side. As I sit here waiting for my husband to come out of 👁️ surgery I am filled with gratitude for my

colleagues and
@OpNotes
residents whose willingness to step up and help out made it possible for me to be here for him today.
I am VERY bad with names. I can remember specific details of conversations, but w names I frequently forget before a conversation is over. It’s embarrassing, which is why I’m so grateful for

Some days I leave the hospital completely & totally exhausted after bouncing from case to case. Today was one of those days. But seeing this view when I leave the hospital makes me so proud of the work we do at
@StanfordSurgery
& humbled by the patients who entrust us to do it.
If you are a medical student who found their way to my page & you are curious about surgery (residency, application, work/life balance, or anything else) please DM me & I would be thrilled to answer your questions. It is never annoying to hear from ppl interested in Surgery!

Every surgeon has the time to introduce themselves and ask permission to perform an exam. All surgeons should do this every single time.
🤔 So what is it like to be a Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Fellow at

1) This is not your fault
2) This is not from missing antibiotic doses
3) Anastomotic leaks are not prevented by taking antibiotics
4) It’s normal to want tight control of the things that we can control. It’s torture to know there are many things we can’t
5) I hope your dad is ok
@pallbro
I have literally done this. On morning rounds. With a very gracious and kind older “grandparent” like patient (you know the ones I’m talking about). I said it back instinctively then wondered if it was weird while walking out of the room with the rest of the team 🤔
@MacatitoMD
Coming from someone who just completed their surgical residency this past June.. find a program where you can bring 👏🏻 your 👏🏻 whole 👏🏻 self 👏🏻 to 👏🏻 work! I can’t say enough good things about my experience as a queer resident at

Fellowship with my incredible APD and mentor
@MonicaDuaMD
and of course, Olivia!
I continue to be blown away by the volume, complexity, and quality of my training here!
Fellowship is hard. The days are long and time spent at home is short. Having an exceptionally patient husband who is also a gifted cook makes these long days feel a little lighter. Forever grateful for everything he does to keep me going 🌈👬😷
