I disagree that Game degrees are useless. There are just varying qualities to the courses because the first one started in the UK in 1997. I’m building a course my students are proud to graduate from because we aren’t churning out AAA cogs… cont.
Let me drop another bomb here folks. Game development degrees are completely worthless.
You spend several years learning from a curriculum that is out of date by the time you arrive, and by the time you leave you have no hiring advantage over a hobbyist.

Regardless of the game, the culture in Japan makes it hard for anyone to go independent. Even for Kojima, I imagine there were many challenges BUT my main issue is the hero-worship and auterism that continues to perpetuate this idea that a game is the vision of a single person 🤷🏻♀️

I think it’s sad that people in the industry, who themselves benefit from a degree, are discouraging students to invest in their education. The games industry is not the be all and end all. We have under 2000 open jobs in total in games in the UK right now. It is dire.

Stop saying games degrees in general are useless. This is super harmful to those that do not have access or would benefit from a structured program. Call out specific institutions and programs for being snake oil salesman that have flashy marketing but no minerals.

I hate the term ‘soft’ skills. It makes it sound non-essential and frivolous. Social and communication skills are essential. How about ‘human’ skills or ‘fundamental’ skills instead? These are so important to our society that I don’t think it’s right to minimise 🤔

We do need digital skills to transform our economy and talent pipeline. A Games degree will give you the most comprehensive education and training you can get in these subjects. It gives you options and in the UK, it is fairly low risk compared to USA.
