After nearly 3 years of work, Game UI Database 2.0 has officially launched!! WE DID IT EVERYONE!!!! 😭
Explore an incredible 55,500+ game UI screens and videos, all filterable by screen types, controls, textures, patterns, HUD elements, colour and more!
I have now collected over 300 games worth of video for Game UI Database 2.0!
Every single clip has been specially encoded to allow for high speed scrubbing, frame-by-frame. This is great for studying complex transitions and motion gfx, or simply enjoying the UI at your own pace!
The Game UI Database has been laggy as hell for weeks now, but my server overlord
@Jay_X_Peet
managed to fix it by blocking a single IP address. Guess who the culprit was? 🙄
Proud to present the Game UI Database! A whopping 11569 screenshots, 325 games, and filterable by screen type, genre, art style, control scheme, layout, patterns, textures and more! ENJOY!

I feel so sad and powerless. Don’t be fooled by their claims of “support”, this is exactly how it starts. They’re clearly testing the waters with the small stuff before rolling out more aggressive forms of AI.
This work could have created a job for a Junior. Fucking disgusting.
@theRazbuten
The Souls series borrowed ideas from Zelda, BOTW took a lot of inspiration from Souls, Elden Ring was greatly inspired by BOTW, and I can certainly see where TOTK took inspiration from Elden Ring.
There’s nothing shady going on here, this is pretty standard in game development!
After 2.5 years of work, I'm proud to finally announce that Game UI Database 2.0 will launch August 5th!!
Completely rebuilt from the ground up with an extensive video library, colour analysis tools, brand new filters, font size detection, an image inspector and much, much more.
Game devs aren’t prestigious villains in ivory towers, we’re hard working, underpaid and passionate people who go through hell just to create cool stuff for players to enjoy.
This ‘Us vs Them’ mentality is exhausting. We’re all gamers, just some of us happen to make games too.
One of my proudest achievements in the upcoming Game UI Database 2.0: the image inspector!
Toggle this sidebar on any image to get a complete readout of its colour palette, harmonies, styles, screen patterns, and HUD elements. You can even hover over words to get font sizes!
Oh look,
@Microsoft
are back! I wonder why a source from Copilot was logged on my website for 161 consecutive hours 🤔 Gosh it's a mystery!
As I have said on here many times, stated in a disclaimer *and* configured in my Robots.txt, I don't consent to this. Please just fuck off.
I actually love seeing UI lectures from people who haven’t the faintest idea about the intricacies of UI design. Adorable.
BRB while I reorganise the database by “Good HUD” and “Bad HUD”.
I had a breakdown at uni and failed my degree. I was jobless, on the dole and in therapy with severe anxiety, depression and OCD until I was 28.
Now i'm 38 with a lead role in the games industry, an award-winning website, and a book on the way 💪 Still pinching myself everyday.
Flex your lowest academic low score.
To remind us that almost everyone fails at some point in life but it isn't the end of the road. Just a memory in the end.
Mine was 27/100 in Engineering Math 2, just a year after I'd scored 99 in 12th boards. Much needed kick in my butt.
This is exactly the kind of opportunism I’ve been afraid of.
You think the industry was bad before? Now there are 17,000 people out of work in a shrinking job market. The big studios know they’re the ones with the power now, and some of them WILL abuse it. I’m terrified.
NEW: Rockstar Games is asking all of its employees to return to the office five days a week starting in April for security and productivity reasons as they enter the final stretch of development on Grand Theft Auto VI. (Employees are not thrilled.)
For the love of god, can you degenerative AI pricks stop contacting me about the database? No, you can't have access to the data, no I'm not interested in working with you, and no, I'm not the least bit flattered that you're using my platform in your dev process. Just fuck off.
@Jay_X_Peet
By the way, Jay doesn't get nearly enough praise for giving the database such a stable and reliable home. Please give them all your thanks, the site simply wouldn't exist without them!!
I love that feeling when a category on the site is so specific that its content is just super self-explanatory and satisfying to look at 🥰 Look! There's a gallery JUST for camera transitions in UI screens!! How cool is that??
12 days to go until Game UI Database 2.0 launches!
I haven't talked much about how I did the colour stuff, but oh man... it was horrible 😅 When I was finally done (after 2 years!!), I was like "that was NOT worth it", but it actually ended up being the most popular part of 2.0! Seeing comments like this make it all worthwhile ☺️
Introducing PadCrafter!
Create multiple variations of gamepad layouts across different modes and platforms, and solve button-related UX problems with ease.
No registration required, and sharing your work is as simple as copying the URL from your browser!
The Game UI Database is 2 years old today, and the site is even closer to becoming the UI resource that I always dreamt of since starting my career.
Still lots to do, but for now I'm insanely proud of everything myself and the database have achieved!
Where are the "game devs are lazy" bunch when we have CEOs of multi-billion dollar companies like EA cutting corners to line their own pockets?
Gamers, we need you to be angry about this, NO ONE benefits from this. You're going to be paying full price for AI generated slop.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson says there's a "real hunger" among developers to use generative AI to speed up development.
More than half of EA's development processes can be "positively impacted" by AI, Wilson claims.
A "741h 36m 47s" session just got logged on the Game UI Database's server. Have a wild guess at what they were doing.
It breaks my heart. I didn't work my ass off on this resource just so that it could be stolen and fed into a machine that might someday take my job. Parasites.
PadCrafter has been updated!
- Added colour customization
- Export as JSON (for Unity support)
- Revised analog stick inputs
- Clean Canvas View (removes grey boxes)
- QOL Improvements
More customization options and SVG exports are coming next week!
The Game UI Database is three years old today!!
Thank you so much for all of your support, enthusiasm and encouragement. I feel very blessed to have this platform, and I will continue to build free and accessible tools, as well as support the industry in whatever way I can.
Right, let's celebrate this properly. We did it, the Game UI Database has finally reached 1000 games!!
It goes without saying that I never expected to hit this milestone, and I couldn't have done it without you all.

Incase you couldn't tell by now, I *love* building my own tools to solve everyday gamedev problems. Besides the Game UI Database, I've built myself quite a collection of mini-projects and experiments.
I'm excited to announce that I'll be releasing the first of these tomorrow!
The scariest thing about these studio layoffs is you just know they're going to start hiring again next year, but with even lower salaries and tighter demands (no remote).
With so many jobless now, they've effectively undercut the bargaining power of everyone in this industry.
Considering none of your designers have asked for this, it's safe to say this tool isn't for them.
The industry is bleeding talent, profits are up and you're introducing yet another cost-cutting measure designed to replace us. Disgusting.
With more extraordinary tools comes more extraordinary games. We're excited to see what people build with new AI-enabled game dev tools as we embark upon a partnership with
@inworld_ai
to make it easier for devs to realize their creative vision
So this happened recently 👀 I won a Guinness World Record for the Game UI Database??!? WHAT?
Actually... it was awarded in November 2022, but I only just found out because no one from the records team informed me 😂😭 So proud of this, my certificates are coming next week!
You are disgusting,
@OwlcatGames
. Maybe you missed the memo, but there are literally thousands of artists out of work right now. Perhaps consider hiring more of those rather than replacing them with tools that are built on their stolen artwork 🖕
Due to an increase in bot activity, I've been forced to equip the Game UI Database with a state-of-the-art AI detection system.
Correctly identify the HUDs to unlock the site. There are 10,000 questions to find, so don't even THINK about trying to cheat 😤
I'm not particularly business-minded, but how does a company as huge and wealthy as Epic lose 900 employees in one go? Absolutely sickening.
The lack of stability in this industry is horrific, I'm furious and heartbroken for the people that keep getting hurt by corporate greed.
After many (unsuccessful) attempts to hack video support into the site's gallery slider, I finally bit the bullet and built my own one from scratch. It's taken a few weeks, but I'm so proud of how well it turned out. It's so smooth!
One step closer towards Game UI Database 2.0!
AAHHHH!! What incredible news to wake upto… I’ve been accepted as a full member of BAFTA!! 🤯 This organisation has meant so much for me and my career over the years, I am deeply honoured by this.
It's been a while since I've showed any progress from Game UI Database 2.0, so here are some fresh screens from the site's new game profile pages.
Each game's palette has been used to add a little personality to its corresponding profile. Some of the results are really pretty!
Why would anyone pay money for minimal-effort games created by taking shortcuts when they could have something purposeful and human-made instead, designed by skilled creatives? The only people who want this are CEOs and shareholders, not the staff and certainly not the players.
Embracer rolls out new AI policy to 'massively enhance game development'
The company claims shunning AI models will lead to it being 'outrun' by its competitors
Want to know something awful? Game UI Database has been around for nearly 4 years, and it doesn't have Dishonored 2.
Yes, THAT Dishonored 2. One of the coolest game UIs ever made!?
What are we even doing here? I am appalled. Please take this as an apology:
Just throwing my 2c into this. There will *always* be people who work harder than you because this is a passion industry. Right now there are grads working from their bedrooms on their own projects for fun, and - unfortunately - studios will usually pick them first.
HOWEVER.. 1/3
My dearest bought Baldur’s Gate 3, but he won’t take any screenshots of the UI for me because he wants to, and I quote, “actually enjoy the game”.
I’m removing his name from the database, appalling behaviour.
Game UI Database 2.0 is FINISHED!
What began as a 2021 anniversary update soon evolved into a 2 year project to rework the database into the website of my dreams. It was probably very silly to do this alone, but my god, I LOVE what I've built. I'm so proud.
Time to plan a launch!
My beautiful mum passed away yesterday.
She is the reason I'm here doing what I love. Because of her immeasurable pride and support, I've always truly believed I could do anything. She loved me with all her heart.
Thank you for being my mum, and my best friend. I love you xxx
As an industry we also need to push for 1) more junior roles, and 2) a greater emphasis on soft skills.
Teams can easily fail due to a lack of good communication, social skills, hobbies etc, so we need to start valuing them more, and focus on training people up instead.
It's always the same “hurrr Ubisoft UI bad” comment, paired with some cherry picked screenshot that shows the HUD lit up like a christmas tree.
Here are some more accurate screenshots of Horizon: Zero Dawn and Assassin's Creed Odyssey:
So let me get this straight. Yesterday, TinyBuild celebrated a $2m investment from Atari, then today they laid off all staff at Versus Evil *3 DAYS* before Christmas??
I'm no businessman, but what am I missing here exactly? Is this just needlessly cruel or what?
Concord may be gone, but its UI will be preserved forever in the Game UI Database. A huge thank you to
@JetstreamFPS
for collecting these screens for us!
I also don't dgaf how "ethical" your platform is. Regardless of the model you're using, the tech itself was developed and fine-tuned on stolen artwork, with the sole purpose of replacing the artists who made it.
If you facilitate AI art, you're a shitty person. End of discussion.
...no one wants to hire a burned out husk. Or at least, any decent studio won't.
See your friends, play games for enjoyment, touch grass, and get plenty of sleep. Work your ass off, but don't forget to look after yourself as well. Your work will even improve as a result!
How wild is that!? Some of my biggest industry heroes have been inducted into Future Class over the years, I never dreamt I'd be joining them. What an honour, thank you to all involved.
Also spoilers: the upcoming Game UI Database book is called... <drumroll> The Game UI Bible!!
Imposing a 7-day work week during a job shortage is scummy as hell. These assholes know exactly what they're doing, they’re nothing but opportunistic bullies.
Expect to see more behaviour like this as long as there are still thousands of unemployed workers waiting in the wings.
Take-Two - owner of the biggest entertainment product of all time, GTA - is shutting down award-winning 15yo indie studio Roll7 (Rollerdrome, OlliOlli World) and Intercept Games (Kerbal Space Program) as part of layoffs largely affecting Private Division:
I feel so helpless. Layoffs, generative AI, toxic workplace environments - all during a global recession. The greed and general lack of empathy from those with money and power has led us to this situation, and it's sickening. I'll say it again, this industry is broken.
Between this, the sexual abuse scandals, the workplace bullying, the 'Quartz' NFT thing and the adoption of AI tools to replace creatives, no amount of money in the world could ever persuade me to work for an Ubisoft studio.
Ubisoft Montreal has forced almost all of its 4000 employees to return to the office, in an unpopular decision for employees who say they were promised remote work and have bought houses away from the office:
One year ago today in lockdown, I finally decided to start building the project I'd had in my head for years - the Game UI Database! It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made 😊
Ironically for a website about UI/UX, designing it was quite the UX puzzle itself!
It took a while, but one of my favourite interfaces of 2023 has finally been added to the database—this one has *so* much UI, and all of it is simply beautiful.
Here is Star Wars: Jedi Survivor!

AUGUST 5TH LETS GOOOO! 🎮
So this is a bit mad, and I've only just about calmed myself down after all the excitement...

published an article about me and the Game UI Database!
Huge thanks to

I usually try to keep my Twitter feed positive, but I’m so scared for the future of our industry, and I know I’m not alone.
The next few months are going to be critical as more studios try to jump on this bandwagon. If you have a voice in this industry, PLEASE use it to speak up.
Here's the UI update I'm sure many of you have been waiting for... The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has finally been added to the database!

Why would I spend my precious time playing something that was created with minimal effort? 🤦♂️
What's "wild" is seeing the incredible worlds that have been created by teams of humans. Elden Ring or GTA V wouldn't be nearly as impressive if we knew they were generated by a prompt.
Tencent (PUBG & Call of Duty Mobile) just announced GameGen-O. AI that generates open-world games from text prompts.
This could revolutionize game development forever.
The quality is insane.

I have some news! 👀 I'm excited to announce that starting June 1st, I'll be joining Radical Forge as Lead UI Artist! 🙌
Feeling really lucky to be joining such a wonderful studio, and I can't wait to show you all what I get upto with the team! Big things are coming.
New logo, new swag! This is my first time getting merch with my brand on it. It’s a VERY cool feeling.
I’ll be at Develop all week, come say hi if you see me!
He messaged me first on OKCupid with a 2000 word essay, then told me off for taking two weeks to reply 😂 Then on our first date, he bought me a blanket because I was cold 🥺
Three years later, he still gives me butterflies. He's my whole world, and the best thing in my life 🥰❤️
As a gay man, June used to bring about feelings of loneliness for me, as I struggled with huge amounts of internalized guilt/shame.
I am so thankful for the people who made themselves visible and paved the way for me to finally take pride in who I am. Happy Pride Month everyone!

Final push on Game UI Database 2.0 this weekendl!! Just a few tweaks to make and it's DONE... it only took 2 years 😂😭
Rebuilding the site from the ground up wasn't the smartest idea I've had, but my god was it worth it. I can't wait to show you all, you're in for a treat!
I totally forgot to celebrate this, but last week, Game UI Database reached a whopping milestone of 50,000 screenshots!! Huge thanks, as always, to all of you for your support!
Today's update is Xenoblade Chronicles 3:
Enjoy!

As handy as Game UI Database 1.0 is, it's missing a ton of screen flow information. 2.0 fixes that!
For videos that span multiple screens, you can now explore the player's journey through that section of the game in the image inspector. It even shows thumbnails!
11 DAYS TO GO! 🥳
People often ask what my "least favourite UI" is, or why I don't criticize more work on here.
1) The designers didn't ask for my input, and 2) There are SO MANY reasons why a UI might fail behind the scenes, I'll always assume they did their best.
I like to focus on good stuff.
Just got another small database feature working tonight: if you hover over colours in the palette, it will highlight them in the image!!
Game UI Database 2.0 launches this summer! ☀️
No win this time, but hey! Not many solo developers can say they just lost an award to Unity! 💪 It's an honour to even be nominated into the same category, and I loved seeing my site in lights at BAFTA HQ!
Thanks as always to all of you for your support - onwards to 2.0!!
This week has been incredible!! I'm absolutely loving my job, my book (the Game UI Bible) has finally reached the design stage, and I received some life-changing career news that I still can't believe. My dreams are coming true 😭
And GUIDB 2.0 is out in 10 DAYS!? AAAHHH.
If anyone has Concord, I'd be super appreciative if you could screengrab the UI (or better yet, a video!) and submit it to the Game UI Database before it shuts down on September 6th:
Still feeling a bit shell-shocked from the response to 2.0 🥹 I’m blown away, what an incredible week.
This was one hell of a tough project, so to read such lovely comments and messages has been the best feeling in the world. I’ve been VERY emotional 😅 Thanks so much everyone x
Fuck. Thank you to those who nominated me, and to all my supporters.
People thank me for the database every day, and I'm continually baffled by how something *I* made has made so many people so happy.
Thank you for making this silly UI person feel valued. Love you all xxx
The Game UI Database merch was so popular at Develop, that I couldn’t resist getting a refill. I’ll be handing these out at future events, including EGX!
It still humbles me to think that anyone would want to wear a badge representing something I built. Living the dream tbh 🥹
@stewdotart
But this isn't a spell check, it's content generation. I'm all for using assistive tools (I build my own, infact), but Grammarly could never replace a writer.
I'm super excited to announce that I'm designing the UI for Loco Motive, a gorgeous point and click adventure game that was featured in Nintendo's Indie Showcase!

AAAHH I'm so excited! After a year's worth of work and research, the GUIDB's colour functionality is finally working - and oh my god it's incredible.
Just a bit longer until I reveal the *really* exciting stuff, but for now, here are some shots of the image inspector in action.
Sillyness of this argument aside, I just wish non-UI people would stop trying to create arbitrary rules for UI to live by. Just open your eyes and see how much variety is out there!!
If this is what the team wanted to design, then it's completely fine. There are NO RULES.
The physiognomy of start screens.
The start screen of a game can reveal a lot about how rushed the team was and how much pride they took in their work.
Starfield's start screen either shows hasty shipping deadlines by a passionate team overworked, or a team that didn't care.
