Interested in Public Recreation? Tune into CDC right now to hear Council discuss the future of Rec investment in #yyccc Over 70% of Calgary's rec facilities are over 35 years old! Without new investment, we will lose 11 more pools, half our swim lessons and half our ice sheets over the coming decades. The chambers are packed with sports teams & kids here to advocate for rec!

To my fellow Calgarians and Ward 3 residents, Last night, I announced that I will not be seeking re-election in October 2025. This decision came after last night’s decision on Green Line LRT and much deliberation with my family. It’s been an absolute pleasure to represent Ward 3 in City Hall over the past three years. Despite setbacks from the pandemic, we’ve made great progress on some of the city’s biggest strategic challenges. From zoning reform and the tax shift to making transit free for kids under 12 and record investments in affordable housing, I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish. At the Ward level, we advanced the Nose Creek Park Strategy together, renovated the Sandstone MacEwan Rink and got a record number of Traffic Safety improvements installed. None of this could have been done without the advocacy and support of my residents. You make Calgary a great place to live and it’s been a pleasure getting to know so many of you. I’d like to thank my amazing team, Briana & Sarah, for their endless support and dedication to Ward 3. I couldn’t have accomplished this without you, and the many others who supported my candidacy. Politics is a difficult work environment, but I hope my fellow citizens consider putting their names forward to represent our city. Public service is a noble pursuit, and we need thoughtful leaders of all backgrounds around the decision-making table. I’d like to end by thanking my council colleagues for their leadership, and to the many employees of the City of Calgary. I am convinced we have the hardest working civil service in the country, and it’s been a pleasure to work alongside you. I don’t know what the future holds for me, but I’ve learned a great deal in this chapter of my leadership journey and look forward to serving our city in new and exciting ways. #yyccc #yyc

It was an honour to listen to the storytelling of Blackfoot Elder Duane Mistaken Chief this past week as we walked the Aurora Lands. As the Aurora Area Structure Plan begins to take form, the City is working alongside the Indigenous Relations team to ensure all relevant voices are included. The plan will come to Council this Spring, and will integrate the feedback from community gathered throughout 2024 public engagement. #yyc #yyccc

People always say they want thoughtful, hardworking & collaborative elected officials in these jobs and that’s Cllr Evan Spencer. I’m sad we couldn’t keep him. Wishing you all the best in whatever you do next, Evan!

Talking with students is one of the best parts of my job. I was lucky enough to meet some of the newly elected class Mayor and Councillors at Captain Nichola Goddard this morning! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, curiosity, and truly thoughtful questions. And a big thank you to Miss de Jong and the teachers at CNG for going out of your way to teach about municipal government. #yyc #yyccc

The province needs to be a good faith partner on the changes they’ve asked for “It’s your project, take it or leave it after we broke it” might be great politics for their rural base but Calgarians see right through this, and you’re just hurting the province & city by choosing narrative over collaboration Time to get to work. #yyccc
Grateful to see these recommendations pass today. Council spent most of the day expressing concerns about the current situation and debating how to move forward in closed. The opportunity to salvage value and lay track is of paramount importance. The window narrow. #yyc #yyccc

Today, Administration presented to Council an analysis of costs and risks included in the confidential report provided by the Province of Alberta, on their new elevated downtown alignment, from the Elbow River to 7 Avenue S.W. Based on the $6.2 billion rough order of magnitude estimate provided by AECOM, the Province’s external consultant, the City identified $1.3 billion in known costs and risks that were not included in their work. At $7.5 billion, this exceeds the $7.2 billion cost estimate, based on The City’s 60% design for the Shepard to Eau Claire tunneled alignment, which was presented in July 2024. As the report remains confidential, the details of the analysis will be included as part of further negotiations and decisions within the Reimagined Green Line Working Group. The alignment is only one component of the due diligence that The City needs to undertake before making a decision on a reimagined Green Line. The City remains committed to working collaboratively with the Province of Alberta towards a solution that delivers for Calgarians. #yyccc

The Green Line's complexity has always come from getting through downtown. Running surface rail to the South is relatively easy and inexpensive. Stopping at 7th AVE may allow you to build a longer line to the south, because it skips the hard work of getting through half of the core. I also say *may* allow you to build a longer line because the downtown portion they are building isn't designed to any extent as it's starting all over with an elevated design in a period of intense capital cost escalation. To claim you've saved any money is impossible at this point. These are the details you don't get by simply looking at new lines on maps, and being misled about how these projects are designed & procured. #yyccc #yyc
