And just like that, after a year and a half of work, all eight Gamera Blu-rays are signed off and delivered for replication. Hope you all enjoy them in a couple of months - easily the biggest and most intimidating project I’ve ever done.
So, the big controversy from today’s
@ArrowFilmsVideo
announcement: no 4K UHD for Legend. As I hinted a few weeks ago, there are sound reasons for this, and I’m going to try and explain why in this thread.
I'm thrilled we've finally been able to bring Conan The Barbarian and Conan The Destroyer to UHD! Both films look and sound stunning, and we've worked our socks off to produce and find as many extras as possible. No deleted gore for either film I'm afraid - that remains lost.
Here we go, at long last! First details of the biggest release I've ever produced, and by far the most thorough attempt so far at restoring Bruce Lee's films to original (and multiple) versions and assessing them from a film history/cinephilia perspective.
We haven't been able to upgrade this to UHD until very recently, and rest assured it will be well worth the wait, not least as we've actually been able to do a new 4K scan of the unrated gore footage from the Director's Cut. Be gone, chunky MPEG-2 artifacts!
Someone said this was worth pointing out, so here goes: Shaw die-hards will be pleased to hear our 2K restoration of 8 Diagram Pole Fighter restores the correct logo to the beginning, rather than the same one Celestial stuck to every film regardless of era
Just received an anonymous email containing what appears to be a new
@ArrowFilmsVideo
postcard for “The Boxer's Omen” (1983).
This postcard was reportedly found in the UK Blu-ray of “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer”

THREAD: Hello! So you might be wondering why this month's AV announcements are looking much slimmer than usual. Don't worry, it's not a signal that things are going down the tubes at Arrow HQ - quite the opposite. (1/8)
Yes, you read that right - ten whole extra minutes on The Big Boss, and all two hours of footage shot in 1972 for The Game of Death, including the log fight and the New Territories material.
Obviously I'm biased but I think this Friday's
@ArrowFilmsVideo
slate (April titles) is one of our most exciting and eclectic line-ups for a while, including new Blu-rays from three auteurs whose films were previously released by
@Academy_Arrow
!
Until then, the story of Legend remains, such as it ever was, one of messy compromise. We’ve done the best we could with what we have in the meantime – so, enjoy! (FIN)
Pleased to confirm that all the films in
@ArrowFilmsVideo
's Shawscope Volume One have been passed uncut by the BBFC, all 15s except for Challenge of the Masters, Heroes of the East and Dirty Ho which are 12s. Full specs to be announced at the end of the month!
Will never understand people being confused when Arrow don't follow everyone else's lead and only announce horror films in October - we do them all bloody year!
For anyone complaining about these being US-exclusives - yep, it's shit, we'd release them in the UK if we could, but we can't, so there. In any case we'd need to cut both films to please the BBFC, so go ahead and import already!
Hope you all had lovely long weekends! Now I'm feeling refreshed, I can tell you a bit more info about the Bruce Lee bonus feature The Final Game of Death, signed off and delivered (at last!) on Thursday. To recap, here's the description from our most recent announcement.
Just a friendly reminder to anyone getting all indignant about the second slimmed-down schedule in a row that this is part of our 'circuit breaker' while we get our act together following some internal shake-ups. Back to business as usual with a spooky October line-up next month!
Interesting! Steven (Tron) Lisberger’s long, long OOP British sci-fi Slipstream, starring
@MarkHamill
with the late Bob Peck & Bill Paxton, is now on UK iTunes in a new, actual HD restoration from rightsholders
@EFDFilms
.
The
@ArrowFilmsVideo
edition of Legend is now officially signed off, one of the most bastard-hard projects of my career! All very much worth it though. We were even able to add some more bonus features, see the full list below (with new or expanded stuff in bold)...
What's the matter, Region A viewers; feeling down about not being able to order this? Don't be -
@ArrowFilmsVideo
are partnering once more with our friends from Eureka on this release and will be announcing a US edition (different artwork but otherwise the same) soon!
ANGELA MAO: HAPKIDO & LADY WHIRLWIND, both films in the set will be presented from brand new 2K restorations. The first print-run of 2000 copies will feature a Limited-Edition O-card Slipcase, Reversible Poster & Collector’s Booklet. PRE-ORDER now
A year on and we've caught another writer who barely bothers re-wording material copy-and-pasted from Wikipedia. To quote the man in the gif below, WHYY????
Well, this hasn't happened for a while - someone submitting a booklet essay that is almost entirely copy-and-pasted from Wikipedia and IMDB user reviews
We're tickled pink to bring these films back, *and* in 4K, *AND* with Bloodline to boot! The workprint (*not* a Yagher cut, alas) which has an alternate score and some deleted scenes is a very interesting watch; will be interesting to see which version of the film people prefer!
I haven't worked on any of these (beyond some help with Chucky QC) so can safely say all of these are essential purchases worth all of your hard-earned dosh. The Warriors restoration (of the theatrical cut, which *is* Walter Hill's preferred version!) looks very fucking tasty.
It's the most wonderful time of the year with Chucky, tinsel-town, bloody Italian Westerns and an American cult classic.
What are you most excited about for our final releases of 2023?
Holy moly. ENTER THE DRAGON on 4K UHD Blu-ray looks and sounds excellent. Can we please get more Bruce Lee and martial arts films in general on
#4K
#PhysicalMedia
this year? This rocks!!
Following on my last retweet, I remain more and more convinced that we could announce the Magnificent Ambersons directors' cut and the first comment would read YEAH BUT WHAT ABOUT THE KEEP OR FRIGHT NIGHT PART II
Region A viewers, don’t despair - we’ve partnered with our friends at Eureka to bring you the ultimate edition of Johnnie To’s gangland duo, and an identical Arrow package will be announced very soon!
New Announcement | Johnnie To’s RUNNING OUT OF TIME 1 & 2; two slickly made cat-and-mouse thrillers, starring Andy Lau, Lan Ching-wan and Ekin Cheng; scanned and restored in 2K and debuting on Blu-ray in the UK from 25 July. PRE-ORDER NOW
#MastersofCinema
Not sure why the website listing hasn’t updated with the full specs yet but just to confirm: ALL the dubs (including AIP dubs remastered from original materials), all the extras from previous US releases, new extras on top of that, commentaries on every film... worth waiting for!
With that in mind, we've decided to only release two titles each in August and September, in order to discuss and implement an even more rigorous QC process, as well as giving us the space to finish work on some especially demanding projects (hello, Shawscope Vol 2!). (4/8)
Have seen a few people asking, so just to confirm: no, this release does not have the alternate cut of the film that has played on FX in the US, not for lack of trying on
@landofwhimsy
's part.
Second Sight have very rightly gotten all of the back-patting today - John Seale's cinematography really is extraordinary and absolutely elevates the film, so knowing that this is getting a scan from the OCN instead of a knackered print really is reason to rejoice.
Happy New Year everyone! And to kick of 2022 some very exciting news on THE HITCHER! We've tracked down the negative!! 😁 Thanks to Warner’s archive team for allowing us access, we will be doing a full restoration for 4K/Blu-ray release later this year.
#TheHitcher
Conan the Barbarian comes with three different viewing options, all restored in 4K: the US Theatrical Cut, which hasn't been on video since the 25 year-old DVD; the International Cut with alternate version of the climax featuring the princess (and Mako narration at the end)...
Very, very sad to hear this morning about the death of Travis Crawford, a longtime Arrow contributor and very talented writer and programmer of all kinds of film. Very pleased to have been able to work with him on a bunch of projects in that time, not least Legend and Shawscope.
We'll be back to our usual size schedule in October, which work is already well underway on. The coming year should be our most exciting yet, with something to please everyone, including some of our most-requested titles! (8/8)
Today I am producing (via Zoom) a brand new career-spanning interview with one of my favourite filmmakers for a comprehensive Arrow Blu-Ray boxset being released next summer. Very very very very very very very very very very exciting
These are Scott’s notes from the 2011 Blu-ray explaining the inherent quality issues on the Director’s Cut master. He sums it up well; even though an answer print is often struck direct from the negative, there is significant generational quality loss that cannot be reversed.
We got an e-mail from someone recently, excitedly proclaiming that they'd done a 2K scan of a theatrical print and as far as they could tell no-one was claiming to own the rights so did we want to release it? Er... no. Massive congrats to
@FunCityEdition
for doing it properly!
*EXCLUSIVE* Coming soon from
@FunCityEdition
: a new restoration of Lawrence Dane’s cult classic Heavenly Bodies, never released on DVD or Blu-ray. Restored from the 35mm internegative and complete with the entire original soundtrack.
Add to watchlist ➡️
Very pleased to get this out! Budget dictated that it wouldn't be as stacked as Gamera or Daimajin (think of it more along the lines of Bloodthirsty Trilogy), but I'm still dead pleased with it. Jolyon Yates' artwork is amazing, and the booklet is INCREDIBLY dense with info.
So here’s the deal: the Arrow Blu-Ray, in addition to awesome new extras, has both Director’s and US cuts in the best quality they’ve ever been seen in. It’s still a stonking upgrade, thanks in no small part to those neg scans of the one cut that’s unfortunately missing.
One thing to warn Region B-locked viewers about with Shawscope Vol 2 - the BBFC have made us cut 15 seconds of (frankly quite horrid) monkey-swinging animal cruelty, which will only play uncut in Region A. Everything else, however, is totally uncut, including The Boxer's Omen! 😱
Happy to report that in the latest issue of
@HCCmag
, not only is
@ArrowFilmsVideo
named Label of the Year and Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest as 4K Boxset of the Year, but The Final Game of Death has been named Extra of the Year! 😲
Have just seen the news about Network Releasing going out of business - what an utterly awful loss, no other distributor in recent memory outside of the BFI has done so much in terms of restoring and giving access to our country’s screen heritage.
If Disney ever play ball and the opportunity ever comes to do a UHD with three cuts, we can re-assess what to do with the Director’s Cut, whether it’s a rescan or AI upscaling with fake grain and fake HDR (as I know one non-US label has done without you lot noticing)...
We also managed to wrangle all the bonus features from previous editions, including the Barbarian extras from Fox and the Destroyer extras from MGM, the latter making their US disc debut.
Obviously we wanted to, and it’s not Universal stopping us (they have no plans either AFAIK). It’s a visually stunning film and I understand people’s dismay when Alien and Blade Runner are both on UHD and they want Legend to sit alongside those. Believe me, I get it. But...
Did I mention the incomparable Walter Chaw wrote some exceptional film notes in the enclosed book? No? Well he blimmin’ well did! You’ll be seeing more of him around these parts…
Looks like the announcement dropped today? Cool. My first work for
@ArrowFilmsVideo
is for their upcoming 4K Bruce Lee boxsets. Am I over the moon? I am.
Anyway, if you liked Shawscope Vol 1, Vol 2 is more of the same, but bigger, better and badder! Plenty of thank yous due to those who helped make it happen...
Make no mistake, if Arrow does a new 4K master, whether it’s Tremors or King of New York or Donnie Darko, and spend as much as we do on restoration, UHD authoring etc, we want it to be a massive improvement. Legend in this form would not qualify.
Tonight! The world premiere of our restored Mandarin Cut, and the first public screening of an extended version of The Big Boss *anywhere* since the infamous Kilburn fan event in 1979!
Don't miss the film that made Bruce Lee, as THE BIG BOSS screens from THE MANDARIN CUT in eye-popping 4K courtesy of
@ArrowFilmsVideo
, as part of our Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest strand. Showing 31st May & daily from 2nd June.

We tried very, very hard to make headway with Fox on clearance to include the International Cut as an extra, but no dice. Ever notice that the International Cut’s never been released in the US, nor the US cut in the UK? You need both to sign it off and we couldn’t make it happen.
This release represents a big milestone for us at Arrow and
@MonohausEngine
- our first UHD disc authored in-house! And needless to say, inherent limitations of the source aside, it looks really BLOODY marvellous...
It’s important to understand Legend’s post-production and release history and the materials issues relating to it, which is much more complex and fraught than Alien or even Blade Runner, both of which have enjoyed multi-million dollar restoration projects by Fox and Warner.
What is best in life? Seeing two action classics gloriously restored and looking and sounding better than ever before, with several hours of bonus features?
WRONG! To crush your enemies... see them driven before you... and to hear the lamentations of their wallets!
Praise Crom!
Full specs unveiled! Definitely one of the most daunting projects I’ve worked on and have already learned a lot for Volume 2. Thrilled with how it’s all turned out and can’t wait for you guys to see the whole thing.
The negative of Legend is conformed to the 93-min International Cut... and here’s where things get tricky. The negative is owned by Universal, there’s even a Universal copyright at the end... but Fox/Disney own distribution rights to that particular version of the film.
I sincerely hope more people take the time to delve into the book in the Bruce Lee set. No extraneous fluff here; it’s densely packed with all sorts of invaluable info that compliments the discs, not least Walter’s fantastically illuminating notes on the main five films.
Had the pleasure of QCing this last week and the new Schrader-approved restoration looked (appropriately enough) GORGEOUS. Terrific video extras produced by
@gillianhorvat
and an
@AdrianMartin25
commentary to boot!
Once again for those at the back: there is no surviving negative of the longer cut, and any 4K improvement on what’s been released before would have been nominal and not currently worth the substantial hassle and expense. One day, that may change... but not today.
RIP Roger Corman. Anything I can try and write about his impact will be woefully inadequate, so here’s an uncut OAR copy of The Little Shop of Horrors I uploaded to YouTube a while back. Still holds up great.
I had far, far too much fun assembling isolated score tracks for both films, which sound absolutely magnificent, as do the film's restored mono and remixed Atmos tracks. Poledouris fans fear not, Barbarian definitely has all the choirs etc and Destroyer is in the correct pitch!
The Director’s Cut was restored from one of only two surviving 35mm answer prints, with additional post-production by Universal. There is no better quality source for this version, certainly not a negative. So why not scan the answer print in 4K? I mean, go big or go home right?
The release of the new Monarch series is excuse enough to rewatch Kong Skull Island tonight, which I’d happily place on the upper half of my top ten mega-budget Hollywood blockbusters of the last decade.
We went ahead and did a 4K scan of the negative anyway, knowing we could still put it to some use and hoping that we might be able to pull off a miracle and clear a US/UK edition with all three cuts, which might make UHD a little more feasible logistically and financially.
Simply put, you've never seen the films look and sound this good before, and I can't believe our luck in the amount of material we've been able to dig up, not least the long-assumed lost scenes from The Big Boss (no, not the saw in the head I'm afraid) and The Game of Death.
I didn't produce this (the excellent Neil Snowdon did) but as a longtime major Empire nerd, safe to say I mucked in as much as I could, including advising on the Dungeonmaster cuts and digging up some trailers from VHS tapes I've been hoarding for over 15 years!
Some wise aleck might be piping up with one of the rare examples to prove me wrong. “What about the Cannes cut of Dawn of the Dead, restored in 4K HDR from a CRI!” True, but the Cannes cut is a curio, not Romero’s preferred cut that most people would reach for before any other.
RIP "Jimmy" Wang Yu, star/director of One-Armed Boxer and much more besides. Fingers crossed we can include some of his work on future Shawscope volumes (yes, we'd love to include Tiger Boy, not up to us though!) and that someone takes a gamble on Master of the Flying Guillotine.
Reputation is an important factor too. Alien and Blade Runner are undisputed classics, one an instant franchise-spawning hit and the other a hard-earned unlikely triumph. Legend has still never quite enjoyed that level of respect, as much as we may love it.
Universal spent a lot of money in 2011 getting the Director’s Cut to look as good as it does in HD, but make no mistake: its imperfections would be utterly naked in 4K, and the diminished dynamic range would make HDR a moot point.
(Side note: if you desperately want this cut of the film, it is still available on Blu-ray from Fox in the UK and elsewhere – for now! Just a shame you haven’t seen our master of it which looks even better…)
You may ask, “Why not use the negative to make the Director’s Cut look even better? It’s only 20 mins shorter, right?” In fact, there are so many tiny cuts and minute differences throughout that less than an hour of negative material could be used in a Director’s Cut restoration.
Very happy to have put together Night Falls on Manhattan for this month's announcements, and can't wait to see the rest! Big shoutout to
@Jimmythenut
's devotion to Narc and doing justice to Carnahan's tricksy visuals. Crimson Peak in Dolby Vision! Long Good Friday theme in Atmos!
The gateway to summer awaits with a Sidney Lumet crime caper, essential modern cop drama, new Gallic terror, Del Toro’s Gothic Fantasy in 4K and one of the greatest British films ever made.
What are you dying to add to your collection come what May?
So even if we used our 4K negative scans to upgrade portions of the Director’s and US cuts, what does that leave us on UHD? Two compromised, Frankenstein masters that would inevitably fall short of people’s high expectations, no matter what we did.
Also, I was really hoping that we'd be able to do an early bird announcement for Shawscope Vol 2 today, but we're still working very hard on getting that one sorted out and don't feel comfortable announcing a release date yet. Nearly there though!
In addition, the answer prints do not wholly represent what is in the Director’s Cut HD master; they contain unfinished effects and other issues that would need to be corrected all over again in 4K.
Ten discs (!!!) of Bruce Lee action, a "big box" (hur hur) neatly divided into two halves - the films Bruce Lee made with Golden Harvest while he was alive, and the films the studio made to keep Lee's star burning bright in the years following his death.
Bill's prematurely announced these so often I had to check it against another source - but it's for real this time! Hallelujah! And with new extras for True Lies to boot, I *definitely* did not see that coming. Roll on next March for the three titles I actually want!
BREAKING ON THE BITS – It’s official: THE ABYSS, TRUE LIES & ALIENS are coming to 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on 3/12/24! Plus new

As you may be aware, we've had a few QC issues recently that have necessitated replacement programs as well as some embarrassing errors on our packaging. This has not gone without note at Arrow HQ and we’ve been discussing ways to prevent it in future. (2/8)
This "circuit breaker" will also give us the opportunity to restructure the team following some sad departures (farewell,

Everyone should look forward to some fantastic EPK interview quotes from Dino, the most Italian Italian that ever did Italian, in the extras on Conan the Barbarian soon...
"Dino De Laurentiis interviewed me for his 1976 remake of KING KONG. I remember asking Dino what it was about, thinking he was taking an anti-colonialist slant with the material. He looked at me strangely and said, 'What's about? It's about big-a-monkey!'" - John Hancock
#Horror
There are three versions of the film (not counting TV edits): the 113-min Director’s Cut, restored by Universal in 2002 (SD) and 2011 (HD); the 93-min International cut, released outside the US by Fox; and the 90-min cut with Tangerine Dream score released in the US by Universal.
Because at least then there’ll be one cut of the film that looks amazing, 100% restored from negative, which would make the visual flaws in the other two cuts a little more forgivable. I sincerely hope it happens one day... but knowing what we know, don’t hold your breath.
There's so much else I'm excited to share soon, including further details on The Final Game of Death, which may be the most ambitious project I've ever undertaken as part of an Arrow release... but that will all have to wait until the end of the month. For now, get pre-ordering!
