Remember the European Super League - the short lived project involving elite clubs taking more money for themselves and closing off the competition to most other clubs?
Well, it lives on. 🧵
A curious case from the world of football sponsorship.
Another company, seemingly with no staff, no active products, barely any assets and whose operating company is registered to a mailbox in London, is a longstanding official partner to Manchester City
So, the worst Foreign Secretary in British history is to face off against the worst Health Secretary in British history, having vanquished the worst Education Secretary in British history in the battle to succeed the two worst Prime Ministers in British history.
I was sent a copy of the so-called Super League document earlier today and have spent the afternoon doing some number crunching on it.
A few key takeaways

@realDonaldTrump
58 shot, 10 fatally in Chicago, a city a third the size of London last weekend. What’s your point, exactly, and why are you quoting a racist reality TV show freak for information? What could you possibly have in common?
Neither the final score, the match stats, heat maps, MOTD highlights or any other modern football metric will reflect quite how good Everton were today. Take my word for it as one of the 39,400 lucky enough to be here at Goodison: they were bloody magnificent.
Remember when Everton had a Christmas fixture postponed last year because two Man City players had Covid?
Astonishing decision by the EPL to insist on the game is played when the squad has been decimated like that.
One rule for 'big six' clubs, different for everyone else
5 November. Jurgen Klopp goes off on a rant about Qatar, human rights conditions, the climate, corruption.
6 December. Jurgen Klopp lands in UAE where none of those things are issues 🤦♂️
Essentially this has been devised by a cabal of greedy, stupid and desperate individuals who care nothing about football,competitiveness or the sustainability of the game. It will kill domestic football and create a boring spectacle skewed in favour of a Super League 'big 6' (9/)
FIFA are completely correct in offering every sanction going, and I hope that at the next Premier League board meeting or ECA gathering the people behind this are treated with the same contempt as they were for the equally risible 'Project Big Picture' (10/10)
No Premier League club has suffered more from tapping up than Everton: Moyes, Rooney, Lescott, Stones (by Chelsea), Barkley, (probably) Lukaku. These all went unpunished and yet the particularly tenuous Silva case is being pursued. Really?
A sleepless night with Everton’s woes rolling around my head (yes, I know, I’m a middle aged man with real world responsibilities, but Everton does that to you).
Some personal thoughts as a fan, albeit one who works in football.
I waited until the TV fixtures for April had been announced and booked flights, trains and hotels so that I could take my daughter to this. Game rearranged 29 days before departure.
Screw you Sky; this sort of thing is killing football as a spectator sport.
These are striking miners at the Bates colliery in Blyth. Proud working class men standing up for their rights as workers against the pernicious Thatcher government.
Tonight their heirs voted Conservative.
Shame on them. They deserve everything coming their way.
Considering he’s one of Everton’s longest serving ever captains, Phil Neville’s post match analysis betrays just how little he watches the Blues these days.
@richarlison97
inconsistent? No he’s not - his energy & work rate are vital every single week
Which current and much-loved Everton player has just been spotted in a park in Formby, dressed in a suit looking dead serious, and managing a football game in which all his mates are dressed in Everton kits? 🤣
Yer Da losing his head
Klopp remonstrating with a ball boy and blaming the wind
Liverpool’s senior players complaining that a draw was ‘celebrated’
Great to see Goodison getting under people’s skin again - its been too long
At the same time, if, say Leicester or Everton, were to qualify and actually win it - despite everything being skewed against them - they would earn around half the amount Barca or Real would be guaranteed JUST FOR COMPETING IN THE GROUP STAGE (8/)
Wolves fans singing ‘Sign on, sign on...’ in response to Everton’s opening goal.
And there’s me forgetting Wolverhampton was a wealthy, cosmopolitan metropolis & not a West Midlands sink town that voted overwhelmingly for Brexit
The way Everton have performed in the first two home games under Lampard merely highlight the total and utter folly of hiring Benitez.
Same players; worlds apart in terms of application, organisation and performance.
Super League 10 months on:
- No fines or sanctions for participating clubs
- UEFA backed loan fund to give them cheap money
- Enhanced Champions league package
- Rebel club execs back in committee positions
Now this:
The England football team are a symbol of a modern, progressive multicultural nation, led by a thoughtful, wise and articulate manager.
Don’t let Johnson, Raab, Patel, Gove or any of the other ghouls running the country try and hijack their success to mask their own failures
A question for Twitter: who is Everton’s player of the decade? For me, there’s only one man - and last night’s thunderbolt was a reminder of just what a supreme player he’s been: step forward, Leighton Baines.
@TonyEvans92a
@SCMP_Sport
Everton and Evertonians were - and are - Liverpool’s biggest allies in the 30 year fight for justice after Hillsborough. How dare you insert them into a false narrative about idiots mocking victims of that horrible day.
I've written several books on Everton and have always fancied a place on the Sunday Times bestseller list if anyone wants to fix it for me.
#justsaying
Everton's director of marketing Richard Kenyon is a great guy and passionate Evertonian who knows and understands more about the club than Sam Allardyce could in 100 years.
Sam Allardyce says that Everton survey was "a big mistake" by the club's head of marketing, "who hasn't got a great understanding of football." Says he has received an apology from Bill Kenwright and when asked what mark he'd give himself out of 10 adds: "Piss off. 11!"
What does it all mean?
Possibly nothing at all.
But given City's ongoing legal case with the EPL, its €10 million fine from UEFA for failure to cooperate with its financial control body, and longstanding scrutiny of its finances, maybe governing bodies need to take a look
From the sort of horrific teenage injury that would have seen players at other clubs (Chelsea, perhaps?) left on the scrapheap, Barkley was nurtured, rehabilitated & then coached to the verge of being a top player by EFC.
Pity he scuttled away before he realised his potential
Everton’s performances over the past month have been every bit as woeful as the dark days of Koeman & Allardyce. Lacking guile, gameplay, a Plan B &, crucially for me, identity. And yet Silva has a far more talented and balanced squad. I just don’t know where we go from here.
So it turns out that that nasty
@richarlison97
is actually the second most fouled player in the Premier League & the only Merseyside footballer in the top ten most fouled players in Europe. But don’t let the stats get in the way of a good meltdown
This is mortifying.
Carlo has taken my home town and my club to his heart like no one else I can think of.
And this is how he’s been repaid by some little rats.
This is not us.
I hope he sees that.

Hey Twitter, do your thing: a man called James Tierney has just left his wallet in Ye Hole In The Wall with an adult and junior EFC season ticket. It's waiting with Stephen behind the bar. Nobody deserves to get out of the remaining home games of the season so easily,so please RT
A chef who has become rich selling overpriced steaks to stupid rich people is not only invited by his mate, the FIFA president, to the World Cup final, but given VVIP status and then allowed on the pitch post-match where he pesters Lionel Messi. No words.

@SCMP_Sport
The ‘victims’ song first came about in the past decade; it’s about Michael Shields, Reds beating up their own at Athens, Gerrard beating up a dj, Sir Kenny defending a racist, etc etc., and frankly rubbish articles like this that seek offence where none should be sought.
The plan would guarantee massive income to a 15 club elite and cement financial gaps not only between those competing in the Super league and those not, but within it.
(2/)
Note for Benitez: Given Evertonians didn’t stand for Ronald Koeman’s treatment of Oumar Niasse, now the honeymoon is over they’re hardly going to put up with your Jedi mind games with someone as sublimely talented as
@jamesdrodriguez
.
The 15 breakaway clubs have generously deigned to allow 5 merit based qualifiers each season. But the system is totally skewed against them. They have no say in running the Super League and are entirely excluded from a commercial pot worth 15% of income

It’s fine calling him out on Twitter. The real problem here is that no one did in Barcelona; they just filmed him and shrieked with laughter like little girls
Here’s the “Liverpool fan” who tripped a Barcelona local into the fountain.
Vile behaviour and not what the club is about at all.
Think
@LFC
should attempt to take this further, he doesn’t represent our fan base.
Wega lists its address in Switzerland, but provides an inactive Manchester phone number for contacts. Its address for UK correspondence is a mail box centre in Paddington, London, where you can register up to two companies for £30 per month.
So, Fabian Delph is 'absolutely furious' with the position he has been put in by an Everton club statement about another player being arrested.
Unless you live in a world where you think everything is about yourself, how could you possibly construe this is about you?
Don’t give Allardyce credit for Cenk Tosun
@jjenas8
. He was lined up in the Autumn, before his arrival, and written off by Big Sham within weeks of signing. His quality has shown through in spite of the manager, not because of him.
Wega first signed as City’s “Club’s Official Acoustic Contactless Secured Card Payment partner” in 2015 and extended the deal four years later.
It has been involved in marketing activations with City in the past, but currently offers no products
Atkinson gave the worst refereeing performance I'd seen in more than a decade when Everton faced Spurs last season at Goodison. He totally and utterly lost control and Andre Gomes may have had his career ended as a result. How is he still refereeing, never mind the same fixture?
🟨🟥 Ref Watch!🟨🟥
Martin Atkinson has been appointed as the referee for Everton’s opening Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.
📺 Andre Marriner and Scott Ledger will officiate VAR for the game.

How disappointing that Leicester fans - representatives of widely admired 5000-1 underdogs as well as Britain’s’most ethnically diverse city - should spend last night singing songs celebrating the racist philanderer PM and that festive favourite ‘feed the Scousers.’
Everton’s next 4 home games are Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd. I don’t see them getting anything against these teams. Their next 2 away matches are against Cardiff and Newcastle: if we lose these we find ourselves in a relegation battle. Unreal.
My sister is marrying ‘out of the faith’ (a Red) on Saturday. I thought it was only right that he was welcomed into the Everton family so I got him a pre-wedding gift.
Can everyone else please give this a RT so we can get this trending

@Everton
At the same time, the organisers have shown their contempt for rewarding sporting success. You get given a ton of money for playing (about €180m for the group stage), but prize money is quite small - worth perhaps €30m extra for winning it. Which is small change, really (6/)
Worrying images circulating on social media of a car in flames outside the reception of Liverpool Women’s Hospital.
@LivEchonews
reporting area shut off and police in attendance. I hope no one is hurt.
The plan envisages one off payments of up to €350 million to the fifteen founder members, but only six clubs would receive the full amount with five of the initial members receiving just €100 or €112.5 million.

Great Everton ‘Space’ ongoing. Really like this format, it reminds of radio phone ins when they were good.
Guests include
@ElBobble
and
@YannickBolasie
@VirginTrains
@helenpidd
It’s sometimes cheaper to fly Virgin between Manchester and NY than it is to get the Virgin train to London. Your prices are indefensible
This is the most abject I can remember Everton being since the dark days of Walter Smith.
Terrible results.
Dreadful, disjointed football.
An almost complete lack of players you could identify with as a fan.
A manager out of step with the aspirations of fans.
Moreover, there is an 'equal' share of revenue that is not equal at all. The qualifiers are excluded from half of this pot of money (worth around €1.85 BILLION)

The company has also been active in Qatar, where it launched the “eSports World Cup” to run in parallel with this year’s football finals with a purported $15 million prize pot, although detail for the tournament has never materialised and World Cup officials claim no knowledge
RIP Reverend Harry Ross, who passed away earlier this morning; one of the finest Evertonians and men of the cloth I ever knew. Lots of love, prayers and good wishes to Wendy, Phil and Andrew
I hate VAR. Loathe it with a passion that goes even beyond my hatred of Sky messing with kick off times, £30m transfers for mediocre players, Tim Lovejoy, Jack Warner, being lectured by out of town Reds about my own city, financial doping, sportswashing. Please. Make it stop.
Six years ago today we launched Howard Kendall’s book. Thanks to the kindness of
@Everton
, Roberto and
@ALANMYERSMEDIA
it was truly one of the best days & meant so much to Howard.
Exactly two days later we lost him.
Barely a day passes without thinking about him. Badly missed.
Allardyce publicly berating a valuable member of the club's administration is symptomatic of the man's lack of class, arrogance and shamelessness. He should go now.
Glad that
@GNev2
is pulling apart Martin Atkinson’s dreadful refereeing tonight.
@richarlison97
is lucky not to be walking away on crutches.
Reminder: Atkinson was ref (and totally lost control) when Gomes suffered his horror injury
I really believe that if a combination of Cahill as sporting director, Rooney as manager, and Carsley as coach, was introduced at a stroke the fans would have a managerial team to believe in, galvanise and unite them, and it would look to the future too.
Karius’s plight is ignored by his teammates on the pitch and former Liverpool players in the media off it. It takes Everton’s greatest living player to offer some consolation.
Feel sorry for Karius but it’s how you bounce back I have been there it’s a dark place to be I hope he comes through it
Stay strong
Believe in yourself

A unique club and lovely how they haven't forgotten their old manager.
Wega’s president said in a 2019 press statement that it was “a Fintech company offering an innovative digital financial platform.”
However, the extent of the company’s products are two pre-paid credit cards, marketed to fans of Man City & NY City.Neither are currently available.
According to the Wega website, the UK Wega Representative is Gleevest Capital Limited, which is registered at a residential address near Watford. In its last accounts the company returned a turnover of £14,752 and possessed assets of £1229. It is controlled by a UAE resident.
‘Football fans are frequently accused of getting overexcited, but let’s turn the question around: if you’re an Everton fan, how is it remotely possible not to get excited about all this?’
Interesting Nuno has appeared as Everton’s number 1 target overnight. I’m not saying it’s not true, but as of 3pm yesterday even very senior club officials were genuinely unaware of any such developments and saying such stories were originating from potential managers themselves
I spoke with a senior executive Benitez had worked with at another club on the day he was appointed at EFC. He gave Brands until Christmas and described him then as a ‘dead man walking.’ He said Benitez would want complete control and would fight for it.
Millwall fans ‘taunting’ (I’m not even sure if that’s the right word) an Everton coach with the chant ‘you’re fucking owned by a Muslim.’
Let’s see if
@FA
take some action
Only one man for the United job:
✔️ Saved Everton from a relegation battle they were never in
✔️ Never relegated, in fact!
✔️Took Bolton to sixth 15 years ago
✔️ 100% record as England boss
✔️ Beloved by Talksport
✔️ Voted Brexit so knows about 'taking back control'
Only a former Everton player who didn’t score a single goal in 6 months at the club could return to Goodison with one of the worst teams in the league and score a hat trick in 72 minutes
