I have capacity for paid freelance producing, programming & bid writing this autumn.
I can:
- produce arts events
- strategically support events, company development & business planning
- programme arts festivals & venues
- write funding bids
I was made redundant off the back of 10 weeks furlough. Redundancy sucks. Covid sucks. Lockdown & the sector imploding sucks. However, keeping me smiling, keeping me going & alive are my plants. I did a photo shoot with some of them. It’s ridiculous but I hope it makes you smile.
What’s happening today in the arts.🧵
Arts organisations across England will find out if they have been awarded National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) status from Arts Council England (ACE). Those awarded will receive funding from Apr 2023 to Mar 2026.

#NPO
I’m feeling really disheartened (and angry) with the current state of the arts. It feels utterly hopeless trying to navigate a sector that won’t admit its fundamentally broken & needs a seismic shift from the model it operates within.
A 🧵of things.
**NEWS**
I am beyond excited to be heading to
@NottmPlayhouse
to be their first ever Producer. I've long admired the work
@AdamPenford
&
@stephsirr
have been doing in Nottingham (and across the UK) and can't wait to join with such an inspirational team.
Does anyone think the arts industry is just tired? Feel like we’re so tired from having to fight. Trying to get great art on with limited resources and increasingly difficult models of funding. Like, can we just have a moment to enjoy what we’ve done without the next struggle?
So today is about kindness and solidarity for everyone who works in or engages in the arts. Today’s announcement affects everyone and there will be celebrations and heartache. Let’s come together, be supportive and remember we are all humans with a shared love of the arts.

I miss live performances in intimate spaces.
I miss grand narratives in enclosed spaces.
I miss the hush as the lights go down.
I miss the water bottle and the glass clunking to the floor.
I miss ticket stubs.
I miss the sight lines.
I miss the intervals.
I miss theatre.
If you're thinking of applying for an
@ace_national
project grant I've written some advice and top tips to follow.
Suitable for artists, producers or first time applicants. Hope its useful.
I'm thrilled to be joining
@LeGateauChoc
as their Interim Executive Producer. I'm such a fan of Gateau's work and can't stop beaming with happiness to get to work with them this year. 💃🏾

Those in the theatre industry: do a shift on front of house or box office. Meet your audience, look them in the eye, see them and respect them. After the show thank them and see the impact the work you make has. It’s a brillant reminder of why we do what we do.
Let’s just have a moment to acknowledge a few things:
- the industry is not back to normal.
- burnout across the sector is at an all time high.
Remember to be kind to yourself. We’re in recovery, and that takes time with small and steady steps.
The new
@ace_national
Project Grants guidance has landed and will be live from November.
There are some big changes, so be prepared. Here are the main changes for Under £30k applications…
We all have to step up and work towards a better industry. How we present and shape those narratives is so important.
Left: how
@WhatsOnStage
highlight the RCT’s new season.
Right: how
@royalcourt
presented their season.
Come 👏🏾 on 👏🏽 WOS 👏🏼 you 👏🏻 can 👏🏾 do 👏🏿 better!
We’re getting the first female black playwright in the West End.
We’re getting the first theatre named after a woman in the West End.
I always thought theatre was progressive, but fuck me we’re so behind.
Burn down the industry and start again because clearly change is too slow
“From September 2020 all secondary schools will be required to teach pupils about sexual orientation and gender identity, and all primary schools will be required to teach about different families, which can include LGBT families.”
@stonewalluk
Tears of joy. 🏳️🌈
The Big Freelancers Report by
@FreelancersMake
is a shocking read:
- Av salary of theatre freelancers £22.900
- That’s 17.5% below national av salary
- Av salary of male: £32,600
- Av salary of female: £20,400
- that’s 37% pay gap
- 21-30 years experience? It’s 47.7% gap
I’m very lucky to have some spare £ at the moment. If anyone who was due to present at
@VAULTFestival
needs some financial support in a no-strings attached loan to be repaid over 2022 my DMs are open. Genuine offer, producing in this climate is tough. Ask for help if needed.
Just wrote my first contract, which included clauses related to mental health and wellbeing. Shouldn't have been my first, but glad that I'm including this in
@JakeOrrProd
contracts going forwards.
No one should suffer alone, especially in theatre.
This is just a reminder that theatre is not exclusive to London and the term ‘regional theatre’ is outdated and at times offensive.
Happy Friday y’all!
Very thankful to be receiving free therapy. The work I’m doing is tough, leaving me vulnerable but its necessary. I’m getting stronger. Thank fuck for the NHS. Big shout out to all the mental health specialists supporting those of us in the arts. The silent backbone of theatre.
This weekend I’m in London for a very special reason. Bringing our friends and family together together to celebrate some news...
Back in June, the wonderful
@JL_Performance
asked me to marry him, and dear reader, I said yes.
Richmond Park, 9 June 👬❤️💍
Hurrah! A new BAME initiative to “nurture BAME voices on stage,”.
Free rehearsal space, yay!
Free rehearsed reading, yay!
Free promo, yay!
Free guest attendance, yay!
So how much do these ‘BAME voices’ get paid? £0.
You want to support new writers of colour? PAY THEM.
I never considered that throughout art history men had women (their wives) to support them in their everyday needs that allowed them to stay in their creative worlds to produce art. The history of art is basically propped up by the silence and work of women.
Applying to funding from
@ace_national
for National Lottery Project Grants is changing, making it easier and less complicated for smaller amounts. Hurrah. 🎉
Highlights:
- more space to talk about the art and project!
- different and simplified questions for Under £30k bids
Big news.
@ace_national
have announced project grants will be extended from £15k to £30k from September 2021 with more support for individual artists/creatives at the start of their careers including targeted advice:
I’m going to keep tweeting about redundancies in the arts because this is not going to magically stop if social distancing is lifted, if all those applied to the Culture Recovery Fund get grants.
Our sector is imploding.
Our skilled workers being cut.
Artists forgotten.
Just a small reminder that the
#CultureRecoveryFund
has:
1. Come too late
2. Hasn’t stopped thousands of jobs becoming redundant
3. Created a lifeline for many orgs & artists but is not the answer
4. Isn’t enough to fairly reflect the £ investment the arts brings to the economy.
I'm joining
@HomeSlough
as their Creative Producer for the next 6 months to commission and produce cultural events co-created with communities of Slough.
I've wanted to shift my producing away from theatre to creating meaningful arts engagement via culture.
I'm thrilled! 🥳️
Took the difficult decision to stop working with a company this week. If the last year has taught me anything it is to ensure you look after your mental health in a working environment. I noticed the warning signs early and as a freelancer could remove myself.
This year I’ve raised over £1.1m for artists and arts organisations. Incredibly proud to play a small part in the creation of new work for artists and supporting organisations recover following Covid.
It’s been one hell of a year but we’re getting there.
Just wanted to take a moment to shout about
@theatre503
who this month have announced:
- a new writers’ studio in Battersea.
- plans for an accessible lift.
- the removal of all hire fees.
- paid training scheme for producers.
I am beyond proud of the T503 team.
Every week I get called ‘Jack’ in an email, which is fine, if a little annoying.
Today I’ve just been called ‘Deborah’ and I don’t know how to respond.
There is a real shortage of producers at the moment. There always has been but particularly now I’m seeing adverts for roles extended or readvertised. Freelance through to salaried. Why? Because. Theatre. Producing. Isn’t. Sustainable. In. This. Climate.
Reading about artists I care about having a rough time at
#EdFringe
. Reading about poor practice of journalists, of awful venue staff, mental health, struggling to cope. We all - venues, press, artists, producers - have to look after each other. Support the art and the artists.
I for one am rooting for the
@NationalTheatre
’s new streaming platform. Big whoop for the producers and rights/contract negotiators for the momentous work to launch a service like this during a pandemic.
Meet Sandra, the fiercest diva I live with. This gurl is from the streets. Literally (rescued her outside my flat). She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to demand it. Tap water? Nothing but rain darling. A draft in a room? I’m dead to you. She’s a diva bitch and I 💚 her.
Cirque du Soleil have filed for bankruptcy. They’ve already let go of close to 5000 employees many of whom would have been artists.
Covid-19 is reshaping the future of the arts, and honestly, it’s scary.
This is the face of someone who has just been discharged from therapy. Mental health and me have had one hell of a journey, and will continue to, but for now; healthy mind, healthy heart. ❤️
I think my heart isn’t in theatre anymore. That’s not to say I don‘t love it, more a shift of priorities. I love culture and what it can bring. I love communities, art, grass roots culture makers but theatre? Theatre is tough. A weekly battle to make it, fund it, tour it.
This is your monthly reminder that thousands of arts professionals have been made redundant in the last year due to Covid impact. Thousands who because of this Government’s lack of clarity around furlough, could have kept their jobs for longer. Thousands of cost cutting measures.
Last day in London.
Been living in this city for 13 years, but it’s time to embrace some change. East Midlands, I’m coming for ya.
(Also last day at
@Theatre503
😢)
Today has been a tough day. Love my colleagues at
@theatre503
And wider industry peers but it’s been trumped by an audience member leaving me their cute dog to look after on box office. We’re having THE BEST NIGHT TOGETHER.
Spent the day with my dad, the first proper bonding day in years. Here he is reading my biography in the Wolfie playtext at the
@NationalTheatre
bookshop. He was so proud and I can’t tell you how much that meant to me and how his smile in this photo makes me feel so seen. ❤️
Nothing makes you feel more powerless than repeatedly knocking on the door of local arts organisations/venues trying to get them to respond to project ideas, collaborations or just meetings.
Really highlights how powerless you are to gatekeepers when you’re freelance.
Think I’m falling out of love with London. A month living in the Midlands and you really notice the difference. The lack of compassion, the individualistic personalities, the fight for survival. London makes you wrestle to be alive, and that’s just not healthy for me anymore.
Had a bad mental health day. Okay... I’ve had a bad mental health 3 days. And I’m just voicing it because too often we don’t. And my mental health is part of me, and that’s okay. And we’re okay. And tomorrow is a whole new day. Onwards. 🌱
Thank you for all the lovely tweets of support for
@theatre503
and the team on our call out. We might have upset a few people by it but if it’s a few days of trolling towards us for getting some brilliant plays by mothers on our stage, we can take that. 💪🏼
You might remember the controversial tweet that did the rounds when we did a callout for playwrights to be part of our Motherhood Season.
Well, here it is. Ridiculously proud. Celebrating 3 beautiful playwrights who are mothers with shows exploring motherhood.
We. Did. It. 💪🏼
Freelance for 7 years, in-house for 3 years in London and Nottingham.
I have Produced:
▪️Award-winning theatre shows
▪️Six years of
@IncomingFest
▪️Booked tours across the UK
▪️Managed budgets, finances, funding bids
▪️Artist development
▪️& so much more
I’m getting so annoyed at arts organisations who add a £3 transaction to bookings. Its not fair on audiences. It dissuades from booking. It makes the arts (event more) inaccessible.
It’s a brand new week, which means we are:
- 1 week closer to everyone being vaccinated.
- 1 week closer to theatres and arts venues opening again.
- 1 week closer to being able to see and hug loved ones.
We can do this.
When it comes to
@TheStage
100 I always skip to the end of the list. Why? Because those are the real change makers who are championing and shaking up our industry not through wealth or job prospects. They do it because they have to, to make a better, fairer industry. Eg
@bobimono
11 years after graduating from
@rosebruford
I’ve just sent my first email from my new staff account as I’m supervising third year
@BrufordETA
students. Come full circle from my first .ac.uk email!
The fear that is deep inside any LGBT person; holding hands with your partner & receiving hate crime. It’s 2019 & yet two men were attacked in daylight, outside the

This 👏🏾 is 👏🏾 not 👏🏾 what 👏🏾 progress 👏🏾 looks 👏🏾 like.
Find these attackers.
🎉News🎉
I’m thrilled to be joining the brilliant
@wearenonsuch
team as the Creative Programme Associate Programmer.
Getting to programme amazing artists and companies at my favourite local Nottingham theatre is a proper dream.
My mental health has has nose dived in the last few days. I don’t need sympathy but let’s just acknowledge that living with mental health means enduring a long journey of highs and lows. You can’t rush that journey, you just have to walk it out, step by step.
Deeply saddened to learn many of my peers are facing or have been made redundant. Tens of messages from friends and peers all saying the same. The arts sector is imploding and it is affecting everyone from top to bottom. Those that will survive? Those with the deepest pockets.
Today is my last day at
@NottmPlayhouse
. What a difference a year can make, ay duck’eh? Thank you to NP staff & artists for having me as your first Producer. Big thanks to Nottingham for welcoming me. Here’s to a bright Notts adventure as a freelancer. (L: first day R: last day)
2019 marks the 10th year of
@ayoungertheatre
. Who’d have thought that when I started my blog about theatre it’ll grow to be an organisation supporting emerging writers, a festival supporting emerging companies
@IncomingFest
and a champion of the arts through young people. Proud.
I do find it amusing that Darren Henley of
@ace_national
is being called before DCMS select committee to explain context for its funding decision of NPOs, when it is the very same department that requested cuts to the portfolio and moving of organisations out of London. 🤷♂️
Anyway, those are some thoughts that are making me angry, lacking in hope and wanting to chuck the towel in as a producer right now.
But let’s not be all gloomy. Here is a photo from my walk yesterday, look at those trees and the changing colours. That’s nice, right?
This week is a big one for me.
- I moved to Nottingham a year ago, leaving London after 13 years.
- I started at
@NottmPlayhouse
a year go as their first Producer.
- This is my final week at the Playhouse.
- Back in London entering a lockdown.
Onwards friends, head held high.
Devastated Nottingham Council’s budget cuts have been approved.
The withdrawal of arts grants to charities and arts organisation is so short sighted.
The review of all libraries with the potential of 12 closing is heartbreaking.
Investing in culture = investing in society
This week I have supported artists to apply for funding totalling over £157k including a music festival, theatre exploring dyspraxia, a solo show about grief and a 3 city music event for emerging POC/LGBTQI artists. 💪🏼
If a minority group is telling you that your actions are harmful to that group, & are doing so from their lived experience, why wouldn’t you listen, admit that you got it wrong & apologise?
“it will come around again” isn’t an excuse for your actions, it’s ableism.
Going to say some very unpopular things…
- Funding from Arts Council England is not a given, it’s hard won.
- A portfolio of orgs funded by ACE has to evolve to ensure it grows and represents the best investment. By not evolving, it becomes like an ‘old boy’s club’.
Last night I found out a (not so secret) project I‘ve been planning for over a year has received a ACE grant. The first big project for new CIC
@JOP_Arts
& is brilliantly queer, rooted in Notts & responds to a real need in the city.
Photo says it all: ridiculously happy 🎉
2 out of 30 cast are actors of colour.
0 out of 10 child actors are of colour.
6 out of 36 creatives are women.
I’m tired of this. Like, properly exhausted that we work in an industry where this happens. We’re meant to be the world’s leading theatre sector but still allow this.
Makes me sad every time I read about baby friendly performances there is never a mention of
@Theatre503
. I know it’s not about ‘who did it first’ but if you want a venue that offers it consistently T503 is it. For years(!) now every 4 week show includes a parent & baby matinee 😍
Who are the inspiring women of colour who speak brilliantly about kindness, care and looking after yourself and others? Ideally UK based. Who do you love to see speak? It’s for a conference I’m curating…
Got to hand it to the
@TrafStudios
team for their programming. Misty from
@bushtheatre
, Nine Night from
@NationalTheatre
. Damn, suddenly the West End just got more representative AND exciting.
After 10 years at the helm of
@ayoungertheatre
and 6 Co-Directing
@IncomingFest
I’m stepping away from both companies.
I’m so proud of how the companies have grown, the output and hundreds of emerging creatives and journalists we’ve nurtured.
Nottingham City Council proposes to cut its entire arts budget.
This year Nottingham has lost:
- The Creative Quarter, the company co-owned by the Council to support creative businesses & employment
- Nonsuch Studios, 3 large rehearsal rooms, 1 studio theatre
It makes no sense.
Deeply saddened we didn’t make NPO but I’m so proud of my colleagues who worked on the bid and how much it will help shape our output going forwards. A tough day for us and Nottingham (only 1 new NPO), but onwards…
#NPO
We're gutted to say we were unsuccessful with our bid to become an
@ace_national
NPO.
You can't miss what you've never had, but this is incredibly frustrating & disappointing news after such a gruelling & time consuming application process.
1/8
I’m so tired of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s PR stunts around Cinderella. Stop using the pandemic as an excuse for your poor ticket sales. His negativity on Covid/theatre relationship has tangible impact on the rest of the industry. Stop being so selfish.
In
@jakeyoh
's time as our Producer - 317 debut & emerging writers got to tell their story in 162 productions, brought to life by over 2,000 artists, seen by 32,136 people...with him at the heart of this very special building.
@NottmPlayhouse
is lucky to have him. Thank you Jake!
The new
@painesplough
season is 🔥🔥.
@katieposner
and
@charrrbennett
being the change they want to see. Entirely female playwright season? Sorted. Diverse voices? Sorted. New regional partners? Sorted. New award supporting female playwrights? Sorted. This is how you do it. 💪🏼
