I didn’t see this movement as influenced by the recession. It seemed to be a reaction against the influence of technology in pop culture. They saw electronic music emerging as a popular movement and wanted to distinguish themselves by rejecting anything futuristic/digital sound.

The premise of capitalism is that firms compete to maximize profit and market share. Here we have a company with few competitors rationally maximizing profit by cutting costs on parts and labor. The government isn’t regulating the airlines due to lobbying from the industry.
