Drone anxiety? It’s a thing. Well at least it is now, particularly for those in the northeast US in places like New Jersey. The sightings may not be normal but the anxious reaction to the unknown is very normal. This is where some degree of transparency would go a long way. Bottom line is….concern yourself and your thoughts with those things you can control. And do not dwell on those things you can’t. Chances are a lot of crazy things happened in the world since you were born and chances are extremely high your life will carry on beyond this period of anxiety. So have faith in probability and focus on things under your control particularly positive things. Most of us have loved ones that, to put it mildly, can be a negative force. It can be difficult to not allow some of this negativity to affect our own moods and emotions. Although it can be hard, in the midst of their negativity, pause for a moment of clarity….and realise you control how you feel. Life is too short to allow these individuals to dominate your feelings. Does distraction help with relieving anxiety? In short….Yes, but with some caveats. Anxiety disorders always have an obsessive and/or habitual element which drives it. By shifting one’s focus one inevitably destroys some of the anxiety’s power. But not all distractions are created equal and some are healthy while others are not. Distraction (or Focus Shifting as I prefer to call it) techniques are best used in conjunction with other strategies for stress and anxiety reduction. Ultimately your state will dictate how you feel for the most part. This can be accomplished from different lifestyle changes including Priming rituals, exercise, breathwork, and positive mental routines (not an exhaustive list). Someone close to me is celebrating their 80th birthday today. A big event is being held in his honour. It reminded me of a thought I had awhile back. Too many people don’t appreciate their birthdays. Poignant insight from @SusanDavid_PhD. The splitting lends itself to tribalism creating the illusion of safety. The truth is that it creates an echo chamber stunting the growth of its members and sparks division.
This week I was reminded of the psychological defense called "splitting." Splitting categorizes people in absolute and extreme ways: "good" or "bad"; "for me" or "against me." Contrast this with the ability to see others holistically. It is powerful to acknowledge that most people contain both good *and* bad qualities. It is liberating to recognize that honest, heartfelt motivations drive people's choices, even if one doesn't understand or agree with them. Integration, not segmentation, is a litmus of psychologically healthy people and communities.
